"This place is just full of excitement." Yep, one glance at Roger confirms that statement.

Yes, there is no "the first 100 pages are a bit slow and hard, but then it picks up later on" with Zelazny. Those 100 pages would be an epic novel in itself.

So sleepy, those dogs! I hope they woke up for the Weekend Reading Report. goodreads: we can put a man on the moon (if you believe) but we can't get a website to work right! Newspapers: Yes, a charming relic of the past. But that's a good story idea. An alternate, parallel world where newspapers still exist. Maybe I can get ChatGPT to write that up. Anyway, thanks for the entertaining WRR!

I didn't think the complete Amber could be done in a month without Roger's help, by the end of next month? no problem, you're a faster reader than I am. This week, I finished reading my first book of 2024 Michael Moorcock - Elric of Melnibone, from The Tale of The Eternal Champion collection, volume 8 of 14. Next week in continuity, Stormbringer - Tale of The Eternal Champion volume 12.

I imagined the “Robert E. Howard” show intro music in the pan-over of the dogs. It gives it a totally different feeling. Zelazny packs a lot of story in the small books. It keeps the story tight and moving fast.

I miss getting the daily newspaper, but it's as much a matter of cost as anything, and the experience of getting news digitally is just not the same. In the Great Shark Hunt, Hunter Thompson wrote about how his deranged lifestyle was anchored by his breakfast ritual, which involved a massive amount of protein, grapefruits, alcohol (described in detail) and several of the day's major newspapers, preferably at a table outside in the sun, naked, for three or four hours. There really is something meditative and even relaxing to me about reading the newspaper over a leisurely breakfast, a relic of earlier, simpler times.

I've finished the first 7 books (thanks to audiobooks) and I have to say that I am enjoying the Merlin saga almost more than the Corwin saga. I guess I'll see how I feel when I get to the end.

I was doing my normal Sunday routine, laying on the couch reading The Wall Street Journal while watching you (and others) on KZbin. I had to laugh when you brought your paper up! I am another who gets two newspapers a day and there are not enough people on KZbin for me to stay up to date with the papers. This seems to be the only time a week I have for the papers. Oh Well.

Charlton Comics, surprisingly, did a pretty good Hercules comic, with scripts by guys like Denny O'Neil, Steve Skeates and Charlton stalwart Joe Gill and art by Sam Glanzman. They went fairly faithfully through the labors of Hercules, but could be pretty playful and even silly at times. Beautiful art by Glanzman and some nice Jim Aparo art on the back feature, Thane of Bagarth, a Prince Valiant-style serial.

Ah newspapers. I gave up on them about ten years ago. Why? Well, the ink smell gave me headaches, the ratio of ads was enormous, the OC Register editorial slant made me angry, but worst of all was the unending war with the dolts to get them to porch the paper. It literally ended up everywhere BUT the porch. I finally conceded defeat.

The bad news? I get a bad sinus infection every year or two that wrecks me for about a week. One hit me last night. The good news? I started reading the kindle version of Amber Friday. It is so much fun. I'm halfway through Nine Princes, so thank you so much for the recommendation. The only other thing I've ever read by Zelzaney was the Lord of Light years ago, which I'd also highly recommend. P.S. Speaking of Amber ... newspapers? Has Corwin taught you nothing? It's all Shadows, man.

I finished Book 3 in Amber last week, too! However, I'm sneaking in a book in between each Amber book so I'm about halfway through my first Otis Adelbert Kline book: Planet of Peril. After that, returning to Zelazny is going to feel incredible.

My high school students know what a newspaper is because local paper delivers a stack through the week. Definitely make time for the newspaper seeing what the non-subscription cost is better put some time in. My 2024 goal is a reread and a first read every month. Finished my reread for January with Stephen King's 'Cujo' and moving on to my first read of 'Dresden Files: Dead Beat' by Jim Butcher. I been on a manga kick of late and turns out the series I decided to try are on the short side. Read volume 1 of TISTA this week and turns out next volume is it's finale while I am reading Dead Company vol 3 this week and turns out it will be the finale of that story. As stated in past not much of an Epic collector but was excited to see Vol 7 of Avengers West Coast was up for preorder in the Previews catalog. Thankfully that series they been printing in order but feels like years between new volumes.

There was a Hercules comic, but it wasn't by Marvel - it was by Charlton comics in the 60s, was loosely based on the original myths, and was drawn by Sam Glanzman who was better known for his war comics.

It's either book 3, or 4 (probably book 4) of the Amber books that doesn't even have a satisfactory end. It's almost as if the 4th, and final book was twice as long as the previous 3, so they just cut it in half, and made it 2 books. Thankfully I had all 5 of the first run on hand when I read them, or I'd have been well pissed off!

I think my dad continued to get the Wall Street Journal a year or two after canceling his subscription. Amber is great. The Anubis Gates is also very good. It takes a bunch of desperate plot threads and ties them together in surprising ways. Been reading the Dylan Dog OMnibus that Dark Horse released a few years ago. Some of the best Occult Detective stories I've read are in it.

@buckocean76169 ай бұрын
I find it disheartening that you consider the NYT a propaganda rag. I don't necessarily agree with every article or op-ed, but for my entire life it has been the paper of record. Some of the greatest journalists and illustrators of the last century have appeared in the Times. I'm really curious as to where you get well researched and well written NEWS that you don't consider propaganda?
