Regarding the word wake in the 17th or 18th century with all the diseases going around some diseases made it look like the person had died and in them times they were buried alive sometimes so as the years went on when someone died they would have the open coffin out for a while before burying it in case the person wasn’t really dead, hence the word wake ! That’s what my parents told me anyway! Love your podcasts

In my early 20s my friends mum sadly passed away and the weekend before the funeral I had broken my leg, on the day of the funeral whilst getting ready and heading downstairs to leave, I packed everything in my bag along with the cordless house phone, I get into the church and as I open my bag, I pull out the house phone. I said to my friends “img I have the house phone!” And they told me take the batteries out incase someone rings it, being the airhead I am I proceeded to take the batteries out, which caused an uproar of laughter. To this day my friend says even tho it was a sad day I gave everyone a good laugh.

Dear All The best line I ever heard, was from a close friend of mine, who in the process of applying to emigrate to Australia was, while filling out the forms, came upon the question " Do you have any Criminal Convictions?" ! He wrote in reply - I didn't know that it was still a pre requisite for admission to Australia! 😂😂😂. Big Oops had a Bad ending though at the time - his application was rejected ! He had to wait 2 further years, before being allowed to reapply,. Their reasons were" for his unreqired undignified sense of humour" that was " not funny" & "out of keeping with Australian values" - We still laugh every time about it. He lives in Sydney now, and is an Australian citizen after all that 😂😂😂 Advance Australia Fair 😂😂😂 🇦🇺❤️ 🇦🇺

Here comes about what a Wake is and comes from. A wake is held with the deceased person in the room, so "they" will not be alone before the funeral. In the jewish orthodox tradition the deciesed isn´t let alone. Same in other cultures aswell.

Well no, because the wake is the reception you have after the funeral. It’s not done before, have you never been to a funeral or something? The wake is usually held at a pub, restaurant, function room, suite, golf club, social club or someone’s house. After you have a funeral service, after burial or crematorium everyone goes to the wake afterwards to celebrate the deceased loved one’s life. There’s usually a buffet, music, photos, maybe a memory table, flowers and socialising, there’s usually a bar and people have a drink.

@@handsoffmycactus2958 Well yes. Wake is ALLWAYS before the funeral if you do it the right way. The gathering after the funeral is either called a repast or a funeral reception. To call a gathering after a funeral for a wake is wrong, ebenthough some do it. I think they don´t know how it´s the right way

Andrew, would NOT have to look up anything. It’s well known British were known as Poms after looking like Pomegranates. My face looks like a pomegranate when I played sports. POMS I should imagine came from The Convicts being sent to Australia. They were actually Prisoners of Mother England 🤔🐨🐨🦘

Dearest William I couldn't agree with you more! Halloween 🎃 is a Bloody Nightmare. Tasering awful badly dressed up, annoying, winging Children sounds about right! Whatever happened to our fabulous Bonfire Nights being enough, without this ridiculous horrific American Soap Opera of Halloween!
