That final thought is probably the worst part of this all. The economy will suffer, meaning, the people will suffer. The above middle class will be fine. The upper middle class will be okay and probably start moving things towards other countries. The lower middle class, those who can will move if they can finance it. The ANC are against the wall, They were the biggest loser in the last election and if the country doesn't turn around, the ANC will become politically irrelevant at the next election. The DA behaved as any SIGNIFICANT party in a GNU would behave by expecting a proportional share of the cabinet. The DA received more than half of the support that the ANC did, therefore they should get at worst one cabinet position for every two that the ANC should get. This must include the important cabinet posts otherwise you are just giving your control over to the same party that has run the country so badly.

In all likelihood the DA will get a "take it or leave it" bad offer which they will be forced to walk away from. The real miscalculation that the ANC is making is that parties like the PA, EFF and Good, are desperate for the money and blue light brigades and will happily take any deal. The DA may prefer to revert to being the official opposition and wait for the ANC to fold completely.

Doomed, maybe. There is one thing mitigating against the GNU and it is the cadres who desperately dont want their corruption and graft to see the light of day. Politics is the battleground but self preservation is the substance of the war. Negotiations, especially with the ANC is characterized by brinkmanship. Ramaphosa is an experienced trade union negotiator. He will take it to the brink and make no mistake he and a few of his acolytes have much to lose if the GNU falls through. Ramaphosa has now reached the stage were he now has to sh1t or get of the pot. He cannot put things off anymore.

I agree that it is brinkmanship but, as with every negotiation, you have to make the calculation as to who has the most to lose. In his previous life as a trade union leader, he knew that in those days, the mining companies would be losing a lot of money for every day of a strike and that soon enough his position would prevail. In this case, the ANC are the mining house.
