Brit here 🇬🇧 No, you’re right this is the frenchest thing ever, and Edith Piaf was indeed also French! You’re also right Voilà means “there/here it is”. There are so many French words in English because the (Norman) French invaded England in 1066 and ruled the country for about 300 years - the upper classes and rulers spoke French in England until about the 14th century. And so many French words made their way into English.

The countries taking part get to design the lights, led screens, the camera work, etc. Some countries invest a lot in it, others less. But yes the year's organizers have a huge responsibility creating the stage, planning the hosting and middle acts, the camera work during the performances, etc. It's an enormous production. Some years it's better, other years a bit less so, but it's not too serious as we're sort of used to it not being perfect every year and it's just the way it is. Awkward moments with hosts and unentertaining middle acts are a part of Eurovision

Barbara actually worked closely with the camera man and mentioned him often. They fist-bumped after this performance. It was a super intimste performance on a huge stage. And her shadow dispersing into birds gets me every time. I am Swiss and to me this was the most French entry ever, as well.

Actually about 55% of the words in English are originally French. And the rest are Old English (i.e. Germanic). It's because for centuries we had a French-speaking aristocracy ruling over commoners speaking Old English, and eventually they basically just merged into one language. It's why we have so many words with a pair of synonyms: one French, and one Germanic. For example "pensive" (French) / "thinking" (Germanic); "beef" (French) / "cow" (Germanic); "fraternal" (French) / "brotherly" (Germanic); "purchase" (French) / "buy" (Germanic) - and *lots* more. It's also why English has about twice as many words in it as either French or German - we basically decided not to choose between them, we just kept everything.

@@lovisalindstrom7920 the roots are not Old Norse, they’re Old English, which was the language spoken by the Anglo-Saxons. The reason they are similar to Old Norse is because the Nordic languages are *also* Germanic languages.

But Germanic and Slavic languages have very little derived from Latin. English is unique because it doesn’t fall into one family. Even though it is categorised as a Germanic language, over half of its lexicon is Romance (from Old French). It is a true mongrel language.

Every single performance from the top 5 really deserved to win in my opinion, and I never could tell which one I loved the most, bcs they were just perfect each in their own way. She commented during an interview that she listened to all previous winners and, at the end, the common thing in all of them is the presence of emotion. I think she tried to give it as much emotion as she could. The song was hers so the connection was obvious.

i like this song on first hearing. when someone have sucha a bacic stage and keeps you all 3 minutes watching that is definition of good song. But then i saw lyrics and everything got even more sense. Song is about artist who is unsecure in hes abilities and will ppl apriciate what that artist do. 2021 Eurovision was full of amazing songs, the production was of the highest level. I really liked this song, the simplicity of the arrangement and the emotions she conveyed (I’m Italian).

As a French person, while I love this song and Barbara to death, this not at all what kind of music the average french person listen to. If you look at french streaming numbers, it's mainly about french hip hop, on the radio it's avout french pop, and then you can add all the international hits american listen to. At Eurovision, people expect us to do some french chanson, which is a strength because it stands out, but a weakness because it's not what our actual music industry produces. When it comes to french stereotypes, the french bashing in the American world can be explained by France not always blindfully following the US, whether it was NATO or the Iraq war, combined with the historical UK v France dynamic that has translated to American culture. I would say France always surrender is very much historically inacurate, that we're not more racist than our neighbors, and probably not as arrogant as it is believed. When I was younger, navigating the web centered around American culture was quite hard, considering the jokes on the fr*nch that were on there but I got used to it I guess. Everyone has to deal with their stereotypes, I'm sure all the "America: fat, guns, bad healthcare" are annoying to get over and over.

I love France (especially Normandy / Bretagne / Pays de la Loire area) and we’ve been driving a lot around there. I often turn the radio on and I always find it interesting that basicly it’s really hard to hear anything but french hiphop on the radio 😄 Like is that all that everyone listens to? You should definitely send french hiphop to Eurovision!

(UK here) I’d agree with you on this, I can see this doesn’t represent current French music but it absolutely delighted the UK. Why? Because despite all the tired old jokes in the right wing press that resonate with a particular generation, we are mostly suckers for anything French. Most people will put France up there as their favourite European country and have a lot of respect for the strong voice of the French people. It wasn’t just the French sound Barbara brought though, the passion and the performance were absolutely captivating. Stereotypes are infuriating I think for any country, and whist Voila might play on them a bit, it was a wonderful entry. Should have won!

In Italy trap is top streaming and selling, but when you see some entries and some song you can tell if it is ‘typical’ italian. This is the most french song the same way.

I'm not Franch myself, but I believe this performance would be better described as Jacques Brel more than Edith Piaf, even though Barbara is definitely more Edith Piaf than Jacques Brel (except Edith always wore a classic little black dress... always. If you're running off to research Jacques Brel now, and you should be, you should start with his rendition of Amsterdam (the song, not the city) Franche have been putting in very Franch songs ever since they last won the contest in 1977, and I hope they never stop, they're generally amongst my favourites and I hope it's not too long before they win again. I enjoyed this one, she was unlucky not to win.

So much the better if you like it, it was made for it. The staging, the play of lights and the camera are super skillful and clever. But if I can give you my opinion as a Frenchman, I find that this performance is too caricatured French, it is really a production to please a foreign audience by activating the "nostalgia" of an idealized France of the 50s. And fortunately you don't understand the lyrics, cause they are quite weak, it's a "facebook" lament to have friends and be loved... As a Frenchman, I am really disappointed that it is this well-produced and well-formatted song that has brought the most points to France in recent years, our French artists are capable of doing so much more creative and more original...

You guys are hysterical. You portray yourselves as a couple of Amer rubes, but your intuitive calls are spot on. The last part of Voila is Barbara (new Edith) as throwing herself frenetically onto a musical carousel (into the chaos for our entertainment) and holds on desperately as it spins faster and faster until she explodes. Take that! She says. There it is! Voila’… by the way, the term for that style is French Chanson. Maybe check our Lara Fabian on Je T’aime live. She’s the modern version. And, of course, Emma Kok which is how people find their way here in the first place. Great job.

As others have said there are so many French words in English. I believe the French say CV (curriculum vitae) as we do in the UK, rather than resumé, as used in the US.

Voilà means “there you go”! Voici means “here you are!” English vocabulary is about 40% French, and about 30% Latin. The rest is made up of Old German, old Norse, Celtic languages, and whatever you’re having yourself. Did you never hear of William The Conqueror from Normandy? The English aristocracy spoke French for four centuries after 1066. In fact, their motto “Dieu et mon droit” is still to this day written in French, not in English. And in European English (Ireland 🇮🇪, the UK 🇬🇧, Malta 🇲🇹) we use a lot more French words when we speak English than you do in the US. As an Irishman who teaches English 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 and French 🇫🇷 in Mexico 🇲🇽, this becomes apparent when my students ask me why I spell English words “the French way”?! eg. Metre, centre, colour, flavour, criticise, advertise etc.

It's very Parisian, which is what foreign people think of as French since the early last century. And sure it has been/is a treasured style in the country. It's somewhat of a conundrum for France, since every time they send anything else, it doesn't do well because people go "well that's not French". The whole stereotype of "THIS is French music" is sort of a handicap. For instance, when they sent Alvan & Ahez with "Fullen", a lot of people outside of France were like "that's not France", when in fact it is. There was even backlash because it had similar vibes to Spain's second choice in their national selection (a Gallician band), even tho the french team had composed it first, the resemblance just came from Celtic roots. There's dozens of local cultures in France (Breton culture, which is more Celtic, Corsican culture, which musically could be described as a mix between Bulgarian and Italian, Creole culture, Alsacian culture, a mix between French and Southern German, Provençale culture, which goes more towards traditional Northern Italy with some French, Basque culture, whose language predates Indo-European ones and is the oldest still alive in Europe, predating Latin and long gone Celtic languages.... and many more). Modern French culture is very very similar to others in Europe because, well, modern world. But it's full of mixed-and-matched ancient Identities people are proud of, and are trying to keep alive, sometimes even facing the adversity of former hostile governments (Breton for instance was suppressed by authorities until quite recently, same for singing styles in Creole Culture, some of which were outright illegal). So it's a bit disheartening when some bands try to herald that on the broader scene of Europe and get told off as invalid. Quick sidenote: in the region of Bretagne, they have been holding a festival called "Interceltiques" since 1971, where they invite celtic artists from around the world to showcase how the culture was and how it is evolving. They have a country "guest of honor" every year that is more featured, and you get bands and artists from Bretagne (obviously), Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall, the Isle of Man, the Asturias, Galicia, but also the diasporas of Celtic communities in Chile, Mexico, New Zealand and Australia, the USA, Cuba, Argentina... It's held every year in August in the city of Lorient. Second sidenote regarding Eurovision and France: one of the reason France avoids selections by the public most of the time is because the French WILL vote for their more folk/ethnic styles to be sent, and the board knows it won't do well.

As Italian myself I must advise you that France is our best "frienemy", so I dont give a thing easyly to them, But I must say, I finf a lttle ingratefull from US citizen to have bad stereotips over France wend Whitout them you will be under the emglish crown for who know how much time :)In any case, French music between the end of the 19th century and 1960 was very important and actually used precisely these stylistic features that Pravì has now proposed to us again. With a slightly older arrangement it could easily be part of the repertoire of Piaf or Aznavour.

@@luisfilipe9272 Come on, it's a generalisation. It's a widespread feeling for us as much as for them but, at the same time, you will never find an individual who really hates the French as such. I believe the underlying reasons for the friction are based on a certain competitiveness between peers, opinions on who produces the best wine, the best cheese or the best bread. As well as the fashion and design competition. Then there are also some historical reasons, the acquisition of Corsica was a half-scam to the detriment of the Republic of Genoa, while the transfer of Nice and Savoy which were given in exchange for support against the Austrians left a bad taste in the mouth. to the inhabitants of the same regions. Then in the twenty years of fascist Italy we were the ones who declared war on the allies (France and England) without any justification but I would find it unfair to blame the Italians as a people for the mistakes of an authoritarian regime that they too suffered. Anyway. Even historically, the two peoples have at different times made an enormous impact on Western culture, obviously not alone, for example with the Renaissance at the end of the Middle Ages and the Risorgimento in the mid-19th century for Italy and with the Enlightenment and the French Revolution for France. Evidently it is a competition that bears fruit.

Why are there so many french words in English? Because England was ruled by the Normans for nealry 100 years from 1066, and the nobility and courtiers all spoke in french....Lots of french words stuck.... 'Voila!' literally means 'See there!' so you say it when presenting something. This was a very different presentation of a song, with pretty much just her, standing there. No team of dancers to back her up.

Как грустно , но и чуть радостно вспоминить 2021, этот последний мирный год, когда было счастье, надежда на освобождения планеты от эпидемии, какие то весёлые планы на будущее и всей Европе было так важно, интересно, какая же песня выиграет на Eurovision 🎉!!! Всего лишь через полгода вся "беззаботность" и фантазии будут разрушены, навеки😒... Но тогда победа была такая великолепная и яркая‼️ Как я понимаю , выступление Måneskin, будет, естественно, абсолютно заблокировано, как всегда 😔... но надеюсь, вы получите удовольствие от их роскошного номера , хотя лучше всего группа выступает полностью live🔥. У них скоро заканчивается второй world tour с полным sold out, год назад вышел их альбом с супер профессиональным, но ,не вполне подходящим им звуком и за этот год на концертах они просто сделали чудо -- превратили довольно холодное, commercial звучание в энергичные , ироничные rock, glam, punk песни🤟❤️‍🔥! Yeah the stereotypes about us suck ass but we also do have our own share of stereotyping the hell out of everyone ( mostly Belgians and Americans 😅 ) , now I’ll say there’s still that Edith Piaf and French art aspect in France now but it’s mostly modernised I mean there’s everything French rap everything like really there are multiple cultures here and it depends with the region of the country

Hi, please react to Eurovision 2016, was a wonderful year in sweden, my recomendation Russia (3rd Place) , Ukraine (1st Place), Australia (2nd Place), France (6th place) and Latvia (15th place). Russia won the public vote and Australia de Jury vote but both loose in front of Ukraine 2nd in public vote and 2nd in jury vote. By the way i saw all your reactions of eurovision, my favorite FINLAND with cha cha cha. Great Reaction.

I feel like it's the chanson genre that most non-French people see as "stereotypical French music", I mean Edith Piaf was at the roots of the modern chanson and Voila is definitely of this genre Also Europe might be stereotyping France harder than you'll ever do since more modern French songs actually do worse at the ESC than the one like this

I heard in one of your videos that someone said that 2021 was the best year in Eurovision, well that person must be young as hell xto say that and dont know anything about Eurovision b4 they were born. The best ever era in Eurovision is clearly the 1980´s, meaning 1980 to 1989, then Eurovision took a turn to the worst when Televoting came along and semi-finals were invented and when Internet leaked all the songs before the final. Before nobody was able to hear all song before a week of the final, me being swedish knew the swedish song and the danish song bcos I only had swedish and danish tv to watch. These days it isnt Eurivision Song Contest anymore but Eurovision Preformance Contest, nobody cares if the singer have a singing voice or not, its what happens on stage that counts, like Finland getting 2nd place last year, he couldnt even sing. 2021 according to me is one of the worst years in Eurovision history, maybe 5 good songs that year.

French entries are not my cup of tea, they all seem very sterotypical and on the boring side (this is just my opinion, Fulenn was the exception). But this is why the staging is so important in Eurovision, it's an equal part in the production and impression it will achieve among the viewers.
