That song was a huge success in LatAm in 96-97. Fey was kind of a latin Britney... before Britney. You never heard about her because latin music only started to get popular among English speaking people in the US after 1999 with Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias; Shakira and JLo singing in English, and only after 2010 with other artists singing in Spanish.

@@deed2157 I agree, but I also remember when back in 1999 (I was 17 then) everyone was talking about the latin music boom, and then JLo released her debut album (she was already a known actress then). She was considered the female version of Ricky Martin who had just released Livin la la vida loca and Enrique Iglesias. AND Shakira who was already big in LatAm did not release her first English album until 2001. And yes, for most of the american media JLo was then considered a "latin" artist, despite being american and singing in English.

The video treatment plays on opposites. She's singing about sugar being bitter. Opposites. So you see fire and water, the sun and the moon [the pendant she has towards the end] The "dancing hands" she was well known for doing that. A lot of hand gestures during dancing. Also guys videos in the 80s and 90s were considered good and artistic if they weren't literal . In other words if they didn't present a literal meaning of the song. Azucar Amargo , is how she's describing her love interest. Like something that is sweet and you want it, but can be bitter and not good for you. So it's a play on words. In any case it was a HUGE HIT, and everybody danced to it with those hand gestures ...lol

Holy mac! How did we end up with a Fey video? I love her music so much. 29 years later and still a fan. 😊 Ps. Her name is Fernanda. Her little nephew, who is now a big Mexican singer, couldn't pronounce her name. So he called her "Fey" which thrn became her artistic name.

Fey was the absolute queen of 90’s latin teen pop. Many people say she’s the original Britney. Azúcar Amargo is her most iconic hit and it was released in 1996 as the lead single from her second studio album, Tierna La Noche. This album and its singles were insanely successful in Latin America and the US Billboard latin charts. She’s still active as an independent artist and has been touring the US this year. I saw her in Houston back in March. She’s still beautiful and amazing!

The guy was bitter sweet to her, basically acting hot and cold towards her. The song is about her feeling he is loosing him. She was huge back in the 90's not only with her music, but everybody was wearing those plaid pants, the plaid long sleeve shirts wrapped around our waists and the upper arm cuff. So she was a lot more than her music.

Whoa. A walk down memory lane. I remember my sister's and I were into her music. My sister's dressed liked her while I enjoyed her music. She was sweet and kind and a bit shy back then. I can't remember if she came before or after Britney. And a few years ago, she reunited with some former 90s musical icons and sang this song along with a few others. She still looked great and fit, sounded just about the same. Good times, man. And when I hear this music, I am reminded of another artist that was huge and still is beloved by the so many fans over the years: the band is called Kabah with one of their biggest hit songs, "La Calle De Las Sirenas".

She’s an extremely underrated artist in Latin America, an electropop queen à la Kylie Minogue (check her 00’s stuff, her album Vértigo, with its version in English, is simply superb). She was THE latina trendsetter back in the mid/late 90s.

I was a girl in the 90's living in northwest Mexico (near California) this was huge. We would all dance and sing to these songs. Along with Shakira before she sang in english. So many memories! Fey is still singing and looking as beautiful as she looked back then. Just released a new song btw

The translation "bitter sugar" is correct in this case because it goes along the juxtaposition described in the lyrics, specially in the chorus: The guy is sweet like sugar but also bitter, he's delirium (in a good sense) and sin, an angel and a demon. Of course, it is more of a literary license.

Wooow! Fey! I love her! I was a huge fan of her when I was a kid! I'm still tho! She was a huge idol back then in the 90's, girls dressed as her, the boys had a crush on her, parents saw her a a model for their kids... She had the record of 11 consecutive sold out concerts in Auditorio Nacional, she was like Britney to Latin America. Because of that, I became a fan of Britney, because she reminded me of Fey, and I'm sure a lot of people thought that too!

Hey guys...always look forward to your reactions. This is a throwback, for sure...as well as an unexpected surprise w/the Spanish pop music reaction. Ahhh...this song/time period brings back good memories. Fey is a Mexican pop artist who was big in the 90's--the decade when I was in my 20's. I have to say that one of the best things about having grown up bilingual/bicultural in the Midwest and having spent part of my childhood/adolescence in Mexico is that it opened up this expanse of great Spanish language pop music, both from Mexico, Spain & Argentina. Fey still performs to this day as part of touring groups of 90's Mexican pop artists.

Fey is Mexican Argentine, mexican because she was born in Mexico and Argentine because she was born from Argentinian parents living in Mexico, in fact her father was in the music industry in both countries, she was born by chance in Mexico because it could have happened somewhere else actually

Maria Fernandez Blázquez is her real name. "Fey" is a nickname given by his cousin, he used to call her in that way, because when he was a child he couldn't pronounce the letter "r" to call her "Fer" as everyone else. Therefore he called her "Mafey". When she was releasing as an artist, she were looking to be called artistically as "Fer" but couldn't be used as it was registered already, then she decided then, to call herself as "Fey" as he cousin used to call her.

Wow, I never expected to see you react to Mexican music, in this case to Mexican pop, this song in 1996 was a success, it spent weeks at the top of the music charts, in all of Latin America it was a success and on Billboard Hot Latin I think It reached number 1, Fey set a record at the National Auditorium of Mexico, filling it 12 times in 1997 (of which 11 were consecutive) with 10,000 people per concert.
