It's confirmed that Fusions are a metaphor for any relationship in general, between friendships, couples, or families. The fusions act differently depending on what kind is closest to it. Also, they can be strictly for battle, but there's usually (and preferably) a degree of closeness between them. With Ruby and Sapphire being so close that it's like they are one, and work better together than apart.

Fun fact! The creators confirmed that fusions are a metaphor for any kind of relationship, and the look and behaviour of the fusion can tell us a lot about that relationship. Steven and Connie's relationship is very human, they're kids but they treat eachother in a mature way (as in, not childish), so Stevonnie looks like a very human teenager. Garnet is a deep romantic relationship, so she's also very human (just 2 arms), because Ruby and Sapphire are so connected that they can easily act as a single person (unlike Alexandrite, where the gems were clearly talking individually during the dinner with Connie's parents). Meanwhile, the fusion between Lapis and Jasper is clearly not healthy, so it looks very monstrous (6 arms, walks on 2 of them like a centaur). Plus they also talk individually ("what are you doing?" "I'm tired of being everyone's prisoner"). I won't spoil their name, but the irl gem equivalent to their gem is toxic in the real world, just like their relationship.

There are lots of moments in which we see the more "ruby side" and the more "sapphire side" of Garnet but I think it's important to acknowledge that Garnet is her own entity which is explained better in future episodes this season but it still is really fun when the show itself draws attention to any one side specifically like how sometimes her visor reflects more blue or more red to show each side

To answer your question about shapeshifting, yes and no. It does and doesn't work like that. She could totally shapeshift to something else, but shapeshifting takes energy. She wouldn't be able to hold it forever. Your form that you come back with after being poofed also can't be too far off from what it was originally or it will take up too much energy, too.

whenever amethyst talked about shapeshifting taking energy,she always refered to it as "stretching yourself out" so i assume this only really applies to the gem expanding the mass of their bodies and making them bigger,and every time we see a gem get tired from shapeshifting it's usually because they changed into something bigger than themselves. meanwhile we've seen a few times where gems shapeshifted into something that looked completely different from themselves but smaller than their original forms and stayed that way for either a long time or at least a decently long amount of time while amethyst got tired of it within minutes or hours,so i assume it has to do with size rather than shape,but that's just how i interpreted it

Also I'm glad you're looking at Garnet and trying to discern what are Ruby behaviors and what are Sapphire behaviors. To represent it being a water gem, because of Lapis, a gem made from high pressure underground, like Jasper, and their toxic relationship.

Non-spoiler: The world in SU is based on ours with an alternate history. A lot of the states are the same, but most are slightly different. For example, the state Steven lives in is called Delmarva, which in real life is a peninsula that is named because it has Delaware and part of Virginia and Maryland on it. Reformed makes me emotional every time. Amethyst hates herself so much she doesn't want others to see her like she is and takes the shape of what she thinks (what she has been told) she should be (more like Pearl, stronger, etc). To the point where even answering a quiz makes her feel bad and having to sit with herself is unbearable so she reforms as quickly as possible. The show doesn't really dwell on it or explain it but Steven's Earth has some differences from our Earth and something different pops up from time to time. In this case, the movie industry on Steven's Earth really is based in Kansas*. Remember, Steven's Earth is basically "Ancient Aliens" but for real and the Gems seemed to have impacted quite a few things. *A little known animator named Walt Disney started his animation career in Kansas City, and started his production company there before moving west to California a few years later.

My reading is basically that if the Gem's projected form doesn't reflect who they are, then it isn't stable and affects all sorts of things, including their ability to maintain it. 15:40 About shapeshift, it does not work like that! All gems have a base "true" form that they can change when they regenerate in the gem. They can shapeshit that form in other things, but shapeshift is temporally, it depends on the talent of the gem in shapeshift to define how long she can be in that form! So, amethyst could shapeshift hand, but at the end of the day she would go back to the form she regenerated in with four legs!

It has shown up in several Final Fantasy games since and is considered one of the mascots of the series (the series has multiple creature mascots). At first, to me, the little leaf thing looked like a korok mask from Zelda: the Wind Waker in 2002-2003, but yeah, the Super Leaf from Super Mario 3D Land (2011) onward looks even more like that image. A fusion is greater than the sum of their parts. There are aspects of Garnet that are Ruby and aspects that are Sapphire, but Garnet is also her own person with aspects that are born from the combination of her component gems. I won't give examples because it will be explored more later. When a gem reforms she creates what is basically her default shape. She can shapeshift into other things, but whatever she shapeshifts to is temporary. She will always revert back to her default until she poofs, reforms, and creates a new default. Gems have some built-in structures to their default forms, such as color and general size (for example, Amethyst will always reform as purple and short), but within those restrictions there is a lot of leeway. So gems might come back looking nearly identical to how they were before or they might look very noticeably different.

4:50 it was very implied for a while that fusion was the equivalent to s3x for a lot of reasons, mainly bc they used “forced fusion” as an equivalent to 🍇. But they theory became taboo in the fandom after Steven started fusing sine he is 13, and the theory got thrown out the window entirely when Steven fused with his dad and now the fandom tries it’s best not to talk about fusion cause it just makes everyone uncomfortable 🫤

As well see later on the more minds in a fusion the slower the fusion is which is due to the mind being less stable or something.

I kinda hate how everyone seems to think Ruby is the mess maker and Sapphire is the mature one Poor Ruby gets a very bad rep even though she is the one that's considerate at the moment
