I watched it live. Scanning twitter at the same time also added so much to the event, from people being angry that the episode had been "pulled" to Reese's tweet in real time. Really felt like a televisual "event" in the old sense. Imagine if it had gone out in the 4 channel era like Ghostwatch did?
@WeeLin5 жыл бұрын
That must have been fantastic. It's so hard to do proper "event" TV these days that isn't a talent show, or something like that. If "Dead Line" went out in the Ghostwatch age, I'm guessing there would be more jammed switchboards, more outraged viewers and more nightmares. But after Ghostwatch, I doubt the BBC would have taken a chance on a script like this.

Remember settling in to watch this with my fiancee and we had been having some troubles with the audio on our television cutting out, so we weren't sure if it was a fault within the program or whether our TV was cutting out again. As such, we were relieved when the first "announcement" was made. And yes, we were both completely fooled - we both truly thought that the audio had really been lost and that the live show had been cancelled, and I remember saying what a shame it was and that I felt sorry for Reece and Steve. However, we remained tuned in as I liked "A Quiet Night In", and my fiancee hadn't seen that one before. When I noticed the music in the background start to slow down, my suspicions were raised. And then, the ghouls appeared and I immediately said "it's part of the twist - that is very, very clever!" My fiancee and I sat engrossed for the next 20 or so minutes, wondering what was going to happen next. It was extremely fascinating to watch this meta-theatrical episode (despite knowing most of the "story" was bogus), and I think it is quite possibly the most clever twist "Inside No. 9" has come up with to date.

One of my most treasured memories is me filming my reaction to this episode from start to finish. I was 14 at the time in 2018 and had recently discovered and fell in love with the series and dead line was the first episode ever that I was able to watch live (how ironic). It started off with me filming myself smiling and laughing and expressing excitement as it began, followed up by a video where I was nearly in tears about how bad I felt for the boys considering their live episode had gone wrong. Shortly followed by a video of me screaming for my mother when I saw the ghost in a quiet night in, and finally me expressing how proud I was of the ‘clever bastards’ when I realised that was the twist. Overall I have never been so terrified watching an episode of television, but I’ve continued to show it to anyone who would let me because it’s absolutely genius. Amazing video by the way! 2 years late but I’ve only discovered your channel today after a video popped up on my recommend❤️

It’s still genuinely terrifying. Even though I knew it was obviously fake and part of the twist reminiscent of ghostwatch and war of the worlds, I was terrified the whole way though. I hate the ghost banging on the window in A Quiet Night In, it’s genuinely horrifying for some reason and I have to look away on rewatches because it really unnerves me. I’m not sure whether it’s the make up job or the way it’s reflected in the glass and seems so out of place in the familiar episode we know, but I hate it. Such a clever piece of television with the stock footage and use of news footage.

I think the ghost at the window was made even worse by the fact they placed it in a familiar setting with one of the lighter episodes - I keep picturing it there every time I watch A Quiet Night In. Very effective, and the use of the makeup and the haunted look on its face still gets me.

@ianfavreau97763 жыл бұрын
As someone who didn't know this even existed until now, I found it really engaging the way you structured the video. Whereas usually the commentary would ruin the fun from the very beginning by delignating fact from fiction, you wisely chose to save it for the end. And the fact that the fire and Bobby Davro's accident were real made it that much more gut wrenching.
@WeeLin3 жыл бұрын
Thanks - I wondered how to do this structure-wise while I was taking notes and writing the script. I knew some people weren't able to access the episode in their region and wanted to know what happened in it, so I wrote a scene-by-scene synopsis. It just made sense that this would go first before the facts/fiction section. Even when re-capping, it still helps to add an air of mystery to the narrative! That accident sounded horrendous, and it's lucky he wasn't killed, but apparently the clip is still shown as an example of "what not to do" in TV production, so at least some good might have come from it.

I watched your ranking videos of the most disturbing Inside No. 9 Episodes just yesterday and subscribed immediately. To have this video released the nest day was a real treat. I have to admit that I did have to click away a few times and just listen to the audio as I'm still unnerved by the image of the ghost at the window in 'A Quiet Night In', and the face of the Alan on the news. The latter one may sound odd but something about him was just freaky. This was a great watch and a good in-depth look at one of the best episode of Inside No. 9. I'd love to see more Inside No. 9 content in the future, maybe predictions for Series 5, or audio commentaries for some of your favorite episodes. Also, have you listened to the audio commentaries for Series 2 from Steve and Reece: you could do a video on that which might be quite interesting. One final note: at the BFI, I believe Reece mentioned that there's a ghost in 'Dead Line' which no one has noticed yet. Maybe you could do a follow up video, finding all of the ghosts in the episode, specifically the one that no one has found yet.

You know, I did watch the BFI talk during research, and I'd be over the moon to know I'd spotted the ghost Reece was talking about! Some great stuff in there, and I don't think many people know about them. I'm glad you enjoyed my videos, including the new one. I'll agree - the window ghost/Alan Starr images are quite freaky when you look at them for too long. I try not to put unnerving images in my videos, only when necessary, and I never add noise/jump scares. I just don't think that's a fair thing to do to listeners. Someone said in the chat that this might be part of the episode and it was at that point that the music began to waver and I looked back up to see the ghoul in the window being freaky, which sent a shiver down my spine. By coincidence, I finally got a copy of Ghostwatch on DVD as a Christmas present, as I was too young to watch it when it came out and the BBC haven't repeated it for obvious reasons! Is there a place I can watch your documentary? I just know I'll be wanting to learn more as soon as I've watched the programme.

Ooh this episode gave me the shivers, I dislike ghostly figures staring at a camera or someone silently, and the plot is amazing, even though it wasn’t filmed at Granada, I’m sure it didn’t matter anyways. I LOVE the idea of something going ‘wrong’ live on air, and then it turning out to be fully planned. Also, I feel that guy who said ‘gives me pipes vibes, I can’t watch’

Very entertaining. Loved the spooky isolated feel of the 3 main cast members being on their own. The little jumps to the other shows were great too. Definitely had the feel of Ghost Watch. I've just rewatched this tonight, and it had me laughing and scared anew. I remember watching it live in 2018, and it had me going for at least 5 minutes, probably more like 10. I was really disappointed that things were going wrong because I loved the way the episode had started, it felt like a great story. It turned out to be even better than that, they outdid themselves, absolutely brilliant. I would have been even less sure of what I was watching had I followed social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, but I've never bothered with that sort of thing and so I missed out on that extra layer of involvement and clever deception. It's the only thing that's ever made me regret not using those sites! Then again, watching it without distractions has its own benefit.
@funnycreature23315 жыл бұрын
You should do more analysis. Love these videos. Could you compile a list of episodes that will hook someone into the series?
@WeeLin5 жыл бұрын
Certainly! I'd say for getting people hooked who love a poignant, emotional story, try 12 Days of Christine or Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room. To get them on quirky concepts and witty writing, go for Once Removed or Quiet Night In (or Zanzibar, especially if they've got an interest in Shakespeare). For horror fans, there are probably too many to choose from (Dead Line would be a good start), so it's really about what appeals to that particular person. And if someone enjoys a good twist in the tale, maybe start with Tom and Gerri or La Couchette. Just be cautious, as I've heard some people say they were put off by some of the episodes with the darker twists. The Devil of Christmas stands out in particular for this. I love it, but I can see why it was too much for some. To Have and To Hold is another one people find super uncomfortable, and for good reason. Good luck, and I hope we can get more people interested in this brilliant show!

The BIGGEST TWIST: They did die that night. No one knows where the new episodes come from. They just "show up" and no one questions it or complains because it is high art.
@EditedAF9875 жыл бұрын
One question I have is what happened to the rest of the crew? I mean it’s mentioned that they’ve all gone to a meeting upstairs but surely they would’ve heard about the commotion occurring. Perhaps the ghosts had already claimed their lives whilst the cast were just chilling downstairs? Maybe they were killed after the episode ended? Or maybe the ghosts had somehow convinced them to leave before they got to work on the cast?
@WeeLin5 жыл бұрын
I hadn't even thought about it. Maybe they were all driven away by the ghosts, or maybe there's a big meeting room in Granada filled with corpses!

I turned off and went to bed but saw it playing on iPlayer and kept watching. Saw it was weird back stage footage and it freaked me out scrubbing through what I had missed of a quiet night in, especially alone in my room with the lights off. I've always found the technical difficulties card to be freaky thanks in part to zombie movies (highly recommend dead set for that one) and the way you're left in the dark about what's going on. Combine that with working with live television before and the clips they were showing it was a brilliant horror that'll probably bring up for years Great analysis and video keep spreading the love for this great program!
@WeeLin4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah, there's something weirdly unsettling about technical difficulties announcements - especially in the UK where TV announcers often sound serious and the background is often so sparse and silent.
