all of the versions of this song feel like theyre on various states of repressing their issues. with the raditude version, the issues are there but theyre far away, theyre unnoticeable enough. the demo version, the issues are getting closer, you can try to ignore it but itll always be there, even if its just faint background noise. with this version, the issues caused by the singers partying is pratically knocking at their door as they try to ignore it.

Man they made a lot of different versions of this song, trying to find the right one. I still think the first one I ever heard, the purely acoustic one was the best. Trying to turn it from a melancholy, acoustic lamentation into a dance/rock song was where it went wrong. It's still fine, though. Geffen Records was probably telling them "YA GOTTA HAVE HITS ON THERE (Raditude). HITS! RADIO READY! GUITARS ARE DEAD. WHERE'S THE HITS, CUOMO?"
@volutedmetal85437 жыл бұрын
Michael Palmer The acoustic is so sad and it's beautiful. But the Coconut Teaser version sounds great too. The Chamillionaire version is better than the album version. Actually, it's pretty ironic that the worst version made it on the album
@michaelpalmer53517 жыл бұрын
hahaha yeah. Is the Coconut Teaser version the one with the electric bass (rather than synth) that was released as part of the iTunes sessions? My favourite version is the one with Jermaine Dupri and the flute player.

Michael Palmer The Coconut Teaser mix was the iTunes Pass one and it had a more hard rock feel to it, with way more audible guitars and bass
@michaelpalmer53517 жыл бұрын
Thanks. I think that's the one I've got, but I could be wrong. There's one that's part of a big 20-track thing they did for iTunes that had mostly album recordings, some interview clips and then (randomly) some live studio sessions for Buddy Holly, Hash Pipe etc. Then "Can't Stop Partying" was there but a totally different version with greater emphasis on real instruments. - I did have the Pass files years ago with the Cold Dark World Rivers Version and all those but lost them all. Mghrgh.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a weezer reference, here's why: 1. Shinji is Rivers Cuomo 2. There's 4 main characters (Shinji - Rivers; Asuka - Matt Sharp; Rei - Brian Bell; Misato - Pat) 3. Blue Album came out a year before NGE aired 4. Buddy Holly references an Asian girl meaning Asia and Japan are cannon to the weezer lore, and NGE is set in japan (Possible shared universe?)

Honestly this and the demo are so much better than the release, they took it from a critique of an unhealthy lifestyle and made it into a generic party song
@KilaKaKa2 ай бұрын
That's the point. It's a guy singing about how he can't stop partying... while partying. It's a better representation of how depression isn't always "I'm so sad and miserable and my life is awful", and that happy people can be depressed too.

I like this version, it's drenched in angsty sarcasm and irony. I believe this song, as well as a few other tracks off of Raditude, we're meant to be sarcastic, but thier meaning got lost in production, they became the same thing they were parodies of.
@badwrongfun554110 ай бұрын
Yeah, the ironic contrast is 100% intentional on Can't Stop Partying. Here's something Rivers Cuomo wrote in the liner notes of Alone in regards to the original demo. "But the music sounded a little cheesy to me, like generic punk rock. And worst of all, the lyrics were clearly a celebration of drinking and drug-taking, which I could not sing without qualms. I tried to expand the lyrics to make them more in line with my values. That's when I realized what a true genius Jermaine is. His lyrics had seemed so simple to me, as if any seventh-grader could have written them, but when I tried to write a second verse, I couldn't manage to write anything one-tenth as good as his first verse! His lyrics were all about celebration. They were totally inclusive. My lyrics couldn't indicate confidence or joy without being at the expense of someone else. Every line of Jermaine's was so strong, so iconic, like a song title. My lyrics were awkward and strained. I set the song aside. In October, in another Vipassana course, it suddenly occurred to me that I could change the meaning of the song, not by changing the lyrics, but by changing the music under the lyrics. When I got to my wife's family's house in Japan after the course, I picked up a guitar and strummed the four chords that you hear on my demo of the song. These chords suggested sadness and resignation in the face of something ineluctable, something fated, a drug-habit, a drinking addiction. Suddenly, 'I Can't Stop Partying' might be a sad thing to say, and this was the undertone which, I believed, allowed me to sing the song with conviction. Was it a celebration? Or an elegy for one lost? I didn't know. But I thought it was beautiful. And that's all I've ever really cared about as a writer. The happiness of the creative moment. It has always been mine."
