I do like the Green album but I can agree it’s very formulaic. That’s because he had the Catalog of Riffs project where he made lots of songs between 1999-2005, he especially made a lot during 1999-2001

Funny as fuck that he says this given that the whole album is essentially about nothing. Still a good album, but yeah. Granted, he was on heavy drugs during this and Maladroit. Both great albums.

He must be, because Don't Let Go is such an obvious song. I like it, but it's not Ballad of a Thin Man, I can't see him writing these lyrics and thinking "woah what the fuck am I writing?".

What about the spreadsheets

@@pphaguss actually i think that’s just when he first starting talking about it. i could be wrong but i think that technique dates back kinda far.
@pphaguss3 жыл бұрын
@@Cauldronofbats666 In a way, yes, but nothing on the same level. He may have plucked a riff from a past demo or re-used a verse/chorus melody but that was it. The best example pre-spreadsheet is probably El Scorcho. It’s riff is from a 1992 demo, it’s chorus melody from a Harvard music assignment, and a few lines of lyrics from a classmates essay. The song was still mostly written in 1995, though. Whereas with the spreadsheet, Rivers could create a new song entirely out of old parts. Summer Elaine has verses from 2002, a bridge from 2011, and a chorus from 2015. All Rivers had to do was add lyrics, which also came from a database. The repurposing of old an old demo’s chorus as a new song’s bridge is pretty specific to the spreadsheet too. He’s always had an interest in writing this way, he just hasn’t always had the technology to do so.

@@pphaguss I think specifically during the late 90's / early 00's, he started using formulas to try and write perfect pop songs, so kinda early form of what he would do with spreadsheets, but similar since they both equate song writing down to a formula.
