AVOID DISASTER!! Installing your weight distribution hitch the RIGHT way! Read your weight distribution hitch installation instructions! When we initially installed our weight distribution hitch we did not follow the directions. Initial weighs showed that it wasn't right. In this video we correct that installation, measure and re-weigh our truck and trailer to verify proper installation. This should make for a much improved towing experience as well as making everyone safer while we tow.

I bought that exact hitch when I bought my F150, based primarily on price. I would not buy another WDH that uses chains. It's very important to torque the bolts to 250 foot pounds. The little crescent wrenches will not do that. You need a larger impact gun, or a 2 foot breaker bar to get it that tight. When weighing your truck ideally you should have the gear and passengers in the truck that you will normally carry. That way you have more accurate weights on the axles. When you go to the CAT scale, weigh it with with the passengers in it, or other gear to approximate the weight. Then park the trailer in a parking spot, not blocking the scale or fuel lanes. Unhook and drop the trailer. Remove the bars but not the hitch. Go back to the scale and select reweigh. It will only cost $4 for the reweigh. Then you can figure how much weight the trailer is adding to your vehicle, and to which axle. When backing with that style of WDH, disconnect the anti-sway bar. Otherwise you might damage the hitch, truck, or trailer.

Best bet is to take a couple of large adjustable wrenches with you. The bolts on the hitch require a very large socket size, which may not be the same on yours. That would be the main part to be adjusted if she already has it set up on the trailer.
@AngellFamilyAdventures
@AngellFamilyAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
My comment of having the right tools was in reference to having sockets and a ratchet instead of adjustable wrenches. It makes it a lot easier, but it's not impossible with the wrenches. I'll see if I can get the socket size today to help out, but also take the wrenches with you.
@AngellFamilyAdventures
@AngellFamilyAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
Looks like it would be about 28mm. A 29mm socket fits on but is a little loose. Being such a large socket size that's another reason why I didn't have one. Buying one for this one use seemed pointless.

Yes. Noticed quite a bit of difference. Without it you can feel it dramatically when a semi passes. Not uncontrollable but you have to be ready and compensate. With it you can still feel it and it's good to be prepared but it is not nearly as drastic. Also, the sway control is adjustable so I may try adding more "brake" to it, or tightening it basically. We are headed out on a trip Friday and I plan to do a video from in the truck showing how it handles and how the trailer reacts.

Good tip! My brake controller usually stays around 7. I've adjusted it up and down a little depending on how they feel but most of the time 7 seems good. I've heard that you test it by going 10mph ans squeezing the brakes. If it takes more than 10 seconds to stop the whole truck then you should adjust. That's what I have always gone by but that may not be the best way to test.

Did you weigh your truck with a fully topped off fuel tank? Fuel makes a big difference.
@AngellFamilyAdventures
@AngellFamilyAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
I weighed with a 1/4 tank but I did that on purpose. I wanted a base weight so I can weigh before each trip and know exactly how much we added. Fuel, people, dogs, other stuff, etc. Fuel is about 6lbs/gallon so I know about what fuel will add and I know about what the people will add. So I can take a swag at the amount of stuff I can add and then subtract my fuel and people weight to know how much I added.

@AngellFamilyAdventures
@AngellFamilyAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
I've heard of a couple people having this issue. I can't tell you what the manufacturer recommended solution is, but I can tell you that most I've seen have used some blocks under the tongue jack to get the camper tongue higher so they can get the chains in. I wouldn't drop the hitch lower, as it would throw off your measurements (assuming they're right). You shouldn't have to force it too much though. If you do, something is off and needs to be adjusted. If you've tried all of that and still no luck, I'd recommend calling Husky or whoever the manufacturer is.

FYI - I just watched an RV technician demonstrate raising and lowering the distro bars with one hand and relatively little effort. (kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIK9aa2Bj9OBeZY) As opposed to you, at 16:00, struggling a bit using two hands and saying you want it to be difficult to get on there. They say, in that video, you don't want it to be hard at all. Just an easy, one-handed operation. (They do point out that weight distro systems can vary in the parts & pieces, but that the principles and process will be the same) The difference in his process, vs. yours, seems to be that they say you're supposed to use a block of AT LEAST 6" under the jack and can get alot of the weight off of those distribution bars. No, you don't want to lift the truck off the ground, as you say, but they even suggest putting two blocks under the jack, if necessary, to get the weight off those bars so they're easy to lift, or release. Disclaimer: I am not the expert - that's why I'm doing the research and watching these videos and reading the manuals.
@AngellFamilyAdventures
@AngellFamilyAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
I have heard that as well and I've tried getting mine up high enough to do that and I'm not just not comfortable with the strain it puts on the electronic jack of the camper. Plus the hitch comes with the little metal tube to assist in snapping them up, so I would assume they expect it to require some effort. Ultimately if the effort required is too great then you obviously have something off. But in this case it wasn't too bad getting them to snap up into place.

I'd say to adjust and take it for a drive. See how it feels. If I adjust mine down one link in the chain (to lower the bars) I feel a LOT of sway. With the bars at 8" it feels pretty good. Ultimately every truck and camper are going to be different. You've gotta go with what feels comfortable to you, obviously within spec and with proper installation.

With a tongue weight of, say, 800, shouldn't a properly setup WDH add 400 to each axle?
@AngellFamilyAdventures
@AngellFamilyAdventures Жыл бұрын
I am by no means an expert on this, but I don't believe it transfers the entire tongue weight, just a portion of it. So to your example, say you have 800 lb tongue weight, the WDH may only transfer 200 lbs. 100 to each axle. Reducing your tongue weight to 600 lbs. I'm just making up numbers for the example but you get what I'm saying. I'll have to do some research on this because you've really made me think and wonder of the exact weight reduction (or percentage) of these hitches.

You need to add another washer to your spacer on the head. The maximum links of chain hanging is 5, adding another washer tilts the head back resulting in lower bars and less links hanging. Your bars will be a little more parallel with your frame also.
@AngellFamilyAdventures
@AngellFamilyAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
I tried that setting as well and it resulted in the weights being way off from where they should and the overall feeling of the tow being wrong. I may try it again at some point and tweak a little but right now the settings I have are the best feel and weight distribution.

@@AngellFamilyAdventures my front axle empty is 3505 lbs and with my trailer on its 3461 only removing 45 lbs from my front. My rear axle is 2469 lbs empty and 3152 with the trailer adding 683 lbs to my rear axle. My tongue weight is 815 lbs verified on the scale. The last 130 lbs is actually transferred back to the trailer axles. The trailer axles are 4940 lbs without the chains hooked up and 5070 lbs with the chains hooked up. Basically what I'm saying is that I think you have a lot of room for improvement. I actually ended up adding 2 washers to my hitch and 4 links hanging to get to this point, you'll have to play around like you said. It is my understanding that adjusting the airbags after setting up the WDH, it negates some of its benefits. Safe towing.
@AngellFamilyAdventures
@AngellFamilyAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
I had heard that as well and I ran at first with no pressure in the bags. It felt ok but not 100%. I even adjusted the bars and everything with no air pressure. When I put 15-18 psi in the bags it feels much more steady. Less sway and bounce. Ultimately you've gotta run what feels right. If you're uncomfortable with how it feels then it's not right. I don't use the airbags as the primary support at all. Just that little bit of extra.
@geoffmooregm

Yes lifting the truck with bags relieves some tension off the bars the same way jacking the trailer up makes it easier to install and un-install the chains. However, just jacking it up an inch with the bags won't do much. You could always add a link for more tension and double check what you did with a tape measure or scales.
@AngellFamilyAdventures
@AngellFamilyAdventures 3 жыл бұрын
If I went up a link I'm fairly confident it would be far too much. I've actually contemplated running with one less link because the bars are already slightly off parallel. I just haven't had a chance to try it out without the family in the truck. I want to set it up and do a short local run to be sure it feels safe.

@@AngellFamilyAdventures I find on mine that one up or down is noticeable in the way it feels and the weight you feel in the steering wheel. But it is never anything that feels dangerous. I know now that I leave 3 links loose if I do not have fresh water and 4 links loose with a full tank. Works like a charm. I have rear bags (factory air suspension) and adjustable shocks. So the truck levels itself and I put the shocks on firm and it is a great experience. My wife even offers to drive a lot. I even followed her once in my work car (she is not insured to drive it) and she drove it all the way to site. I asked he how it felt and she just said "perfectly fine".

The goal when doing initial setup is to take it as close to back at normal ride height as possible. In theory it should then do the same when you're fully loaded. If you squat 2" without bars, but back up to 1/2" squat with bars, then I won't matter what your starting height is. But you do want to be careful not to go over your payload. That is a bigger concern to me in general. I watch mine closely.

Thanks. We always weigh fully loaded ahead of any trip. The initial weighs were only to ensure proper set up of the hitch. That allows us to see what the base weight and distribution is. Any other things added to the trailer can be shifted to allow proper distribution and the weight of passengers in the truck will add weight to the truck but won't impact the distribution of the trailer weight across the hitch.

It's better to add suspension support system(like timbren) or upgrading to heavy-duty suspension to level out your truck and trailer than adding WDH. WDH may level out the sack and from bouncing but puts a lot of stress to your trailer frame and in time your(in general) frame will bend and or fold. This comment is for the general viewers.
