I don't know how any American who follows sports and the Olympics doesn't have Olivia Reeves as their favorite athlete right now. Not only is she beautiful and always in positive spirits, she is a brick house; per pound, she has to be the strongest Olympian woman. She makes weights that men would struggle with look like there's no weight on the bar at all. Olivia Reeves is basically the Lasha Talakhadze of female weightlifters.

All these ladies put in a tremendous effort, but I'd say Reeves dominated. There's something about her smile and her easy manner that makes her fun to watch. Love the way she'd often walk off the stage like she'd just lifted 30lb and not 130 😊

Reeves is so fun to watch. She seems so care-free even while lifting such enormous weight. If she has any fear or nervousness at all she's great at hiding it. So glad she's on the Olympic team.

You mean "the Simone Biles of women's weightlifting". Mary Lou Retton has a total of 8 medals, of which 4 Gold - 1 Olympic and 3 American Cup. Simone Biles, the World record holder of most medals, has a total of 41 medals, of which 30 Gold - 4 Olympic, 23 World championships, 2 Pacific Rim Championships, and 1 American Cup. By the way, Wikipedia only lists 39 medals in total for her personal profile, but she has won 41. One American Cup Silver, 2013, and one American Cup Gold, 2015, that she won have been erroneously omitted from her Wikipedia personal profile.

@newmankidman5763 Well, l respect Simone very much as well. There is no doubt that she is one of the best athletes of all time. The reason l compared Olivia to Mary Lou Retton is because (like Retton) she has come on to the scene at a time when other countries are dominating a particular sport, and then she comes out of almost nowhere and smashes all the stereotypes about that sport and dominates athletes from the "superior" programs, and also does it with a sort of positive personal charisma that is extremely rare among world class atheletes. Mary Lou Retton was at least as famous for her smile and her charisma and being an awesome human being as she ever was for her considerable athletic performances. And l just think that Olivia has the potential to be similar to that due not only to her athletic talent and hard work but also because she has done so much work with her mental positivity.

I know the snatch uses less weight than the clean and jerk- but, technically it is a lot harder lift- all the smaller muscles and muscle groups a competitor uses to balance the bar is incredible- remember when I was younger trying to correct a lift- to stop it from say going back- but the power to correct the position or movement of the bar just isn't there even though you know the bar has come forward over your head. The clean and jerk is quite technical also- but you get a bit of a pause between the two parts of that lift to correct your position

There are five weight categories, but each country is only allowed to send a maximum of three women across all weight classes to compete in Paris. To maximise their chances of the best result, it is in China’s best interest to send their three most dominant women. China has three other women who are head and shoulders above the rest in their weight class and are almost certain locks for gold, so it doesn’t make sense for them to send Liao, who is not dominant and might get beaten as she was here. North Korea are not eligible to compete in Paris due to non-compliance with anti-doping testing.
