Why are higher weight classes snatching lower weights than lower weight classes? WTF?

I thought 81 wasn’t an Olympic category last Olympics. Maybe not many Olympic level athletes in the 81s this time around. More competition in the lighter weight classes. I always thought it was crazy how some weight classes out lift ones above them. Like Naim in the 61 men’s had 190 which might even be the record for multiple weight classes above him. At the very least it was more than the class above him and probably hardly ever beat by 2 weight classes above.

Plus the more the body weight the harder it is to be stronger. It’s why the lighter categories might be able to do as much as 3x body weight for clean and jerk, but the supers will never get 2x body weight. Well maybe the lighter end of the supers can, but people like Lasha will never be hitting the same type of body weight lifts that lighter categories can

Because they are far from top 81 weightlifters. Plus Koanda is competing in 87 for mysterious reasons. Reeves(71) is top 5 in 81 class.

@@gnzoeinyggh yeah that’s true too, but in general the weight categories that aren’t Olympic usually lift less than the Olympic categories beneath them.

@@patricklang7162 that makes a lot of sense, the competition won't be nearly as fierce since there's no pressure from Olympic level performances

@weightliftinghouse could you put a group photo instead of one lifter. It gives the winner away and as a viewer you can't experience the event cause you already know the ending. It's like a spoiler.

And of course the jury add nothing of value and just make everything worse with absolute shit calls or playing very obvious favourites or complete inconsistency... get rid of them or make it consistent ffs, all they achieve is limiting the sport and making it less enjoyable to watch

I think the 3 judges were even worse, especially the middle one. The jury did overturn a couple of the more horrendous judge red lights but you’re right they were both inadequate.

You mean refs? That wasn't the jury that made that decision, that was the initial judges who called the press out with three reds.

Even though she bombed in the cl&jk the Belgian lifter grabbed bronze in the snatch. Lagrou has only been training 18 months for Olympic weightlifting. That’s mind boggling. Does that mean she wasn’t even doing CrossFit or serious weight training for other sports, eg. track and field throwing events? She is a long way from top ten but 4 yrs down the road she should be in the thick of it.

Just went back. She was a hammer thrower so probably did plenty of squats and power cleans similar stuff. Still very impressive to come here and win a medal.

Hammer throwers do plenty of Olympic weightlifting. Probably from the hang position, but weightlifting nevertheless.

women's weightlifting isn't very competitive, 13 year old 59kg emily ibanez would beat multiple women here.

The Canadian girl is an outlier. Her father is a coach and started her working on technique when she was 6! I’m not discounting her achievements, they’re astounding, I’m just saying not everyone starts with her early advantages.

You must know...Weronika/Pl should not go to this competition and his career is still uphill, difficult...from formal perspective...so her success is for this reason HUGE !!! - she's balls :-) (my favourite moment: 1:28:30 and this comnmentary of speakers) - Congratulations ladies/all team..and thanks for showing...cause I've waited a long time...

I am watching the coaches and team mates are abandoning the unsuccessful lifter after the unsuccessful lift almost 60 % of the returning time. This is not sportsman spirit. May be they automatically punish them or being rude ? I wonder.

I haven't watched the whole stream yet but every other time it gets explained. The Americans get an invite for Olympic qualification reasons, also just for practice in competition. My understanding is that regardless of where the American lifters rank in the competition they cannot take a medal.
