…and my husband is a retired engineering manager and worked extensively in the Pilbara. He said to reassure you that the fuel in the Pilbara is NOT adulterated or diluted in any way. A fun fact is The Pilbara consumes over 1/2 of the diesel fuel consumed in Australia. The big mining companies, who are the biggest purchasers, test every shipment to ensure it meets all Australian standards. There are some environmental reasons why you are burning more fuel in the Pilbara: 1. You’re likely driving faster. The speed limit is 110 km/hr but you are probably pushing that to fit in with the road trains. Our 4WD burns 20% more fuel when we drive 110 vs 100 km/hr. 2. Winds. Even a side wind, if it’s strong enough, causes vehicles to put more load on their downwind side, which increases fuel consumption. It seems the Pilbara winds usually manage to be headwinds. 3. The relentless Pilbara sunlight (and this is a weird one). The heat and sunlight cause the road tar (referred to as bitumen here in Oz) to evaporate out of the road, leaving the gravel behind. You’ve probably noticed the road noise is louder in the Pilbara, and evaporated bitumen is the cause. Our roads there get resurfaced on an evaporation schedule, not when the total surface starts falling apart. Driving on a surface that’s mostly gravel with little bitumen not only increases fuel consumption, but it also accelerates tyre wear. If you increase tyre pressure to the maximum, rolling resistance and fuel consumption decrease, (but you need to deflate the tyres when on pure gravel roads or sand).

"Our 4WD burns 20% more fuel when we drive 110 vs 100 km/hr." This seems to be in line with the need to quadruple power in order to double your speed. So a 10% increase in speed, would require a 20% increase in energy and thus fuel usage.
@chrisgregory47966 ай бұрын
Yes and what might they dilute the diesel with? Water? That aint gunna fly. Other hydrocarbon brews probalbly equal or more expensive than diesel anyway. Ive heard of some jet fuels being more dense thans others, hence more energy. But havent heard that with diesel.
@muralk31536 ай бұрын
I thought gravel reduced wear on the tires and doesn’t increase fuel consumption became its surface is softer and doesn’t add to the surface friction unlike bitumen. I grew up and even worked a few years in plantations in Malaysia and Indonesia where the roads were entirely gravel. We definitely had less wear on our vehicle tires. I assumed that because gravel surfaces don’t grip too well they exert less friction on tires.

Great choice going to Marble Bar. You’re in good company with other Americans visiting Marble Bar. About a year ago, my husband (ex-American from Colorado) was involved in flying a group of NASA space scientists to the area and their tour of Marble Bar. He (husband) grew up in a family involved in the Apollo moon landing, so he grew up learning NASA-speak. It turns out the Interplanetary Exploration Team from NASA is specifically interested in the area around Marble Bar, as they consider it to be very similar to the terrain on Mars. NASA is setting up practice exploration activities to learn how best to learn how to look for live on Mars, and where else to practice than around Marble Bar? The NASA effort also uses the school kids as support team (eg, recover lost drones, help the NASA guys successfully walk around this very remote area) which makes the kids totally comfortable with new technology. It’s a great example of how indigenous kids in a remote town can overcome the tyranny of distance and learn things like interplanetary physics and sophisticated data transfer techniques from PhD experts in those fields, whilst living their home environnment. My husband is pretty sure the kids that purloined your cameras are happily involved in the NASA program, so he suspects they know a lot more about cameras, data transfer, and high tech in general than you realise. Like I said, good choice on diverting to Marble Bar.

Another fun fact that iam pretty sure Cheveyo & Tia did not realise when they were at the Cape in Exmouth and spotted the cluster of tall radio towers - Naval Communication Station "Harold E. Holt" is a joint Australian and United States naval communication station located on the north-west coast of Australia, 6 kms (4 miles) north of the town of Exmouth. The station is operated and maintained by the Australian Department of Defence on behalf of Australia & US which provides very low frequency (VLF) radio transmission to the US Navy, Royal Australian Navy and allied ships and submarines in the western Pacific Ocean and eastern Indian Ocean. The frequency is 19.8 kHz. With a transmission power of 1 megawatt, it is claimed to be the most powerful transmission station in the Southern Hemisphere The town of Exmouth was built at the same time as the communications station to provide support to the base and to house dependent families of US Navy personnel at the time The station was commissioned as U.S. Naval Communication Station North West Cape on 16 Sept1967 at a ceremony with the US Ambassador to Australia Edward A. Clark and the Prime Minister of Australia Harold Holt, at which peppercorn rent for the base On 20 Sept 1968, the station was officially renamed to US Naval Communication Station Harold E. Holt in memory of the late Prime Minister of Australia, who disappeared whilst swimming and was declared dead, presumed drowned, three months after the station was commissioned.

I work at a diesel fuel importing terminal. There is strong QA at the import point. If it comes in with excess water, it is drained out before distribution. Diluted diesel is not a thing in Australia. Never encountered it. The likelihood of encountering it would be about the same as in the US. The cause of your worse than average fuel economy would more likely be attributed to the strong winds you spoke of.

I don’t know how you buggers ended up in my feed, but I’m glad you did. You’re fun and ridiculous and entertaining. You’ve got the Aussie Salute down pat. You’re pretty much locals now.

Those last sunset shots were beautiful! The drone is really showing Aus in its best light ❤ Also, the tim tam slam needs to be done with warm drinks to be most effective. The reason you have to slam it as soon as you suck the drink through is because the whole centre just collapses. It's amazing when done right.

Best episode, EVER! That sunset was just breath taking 🥰. The pinks, blues and purples and the full moon over the beach, were all so perfect. You captured it perfectly, well done. Also a big well done to Cheveyo, mate you accent is spot on.

Tim Tam Slam... not Tim Tam Tip-Milk-In-Your-Lap 😂😂😂😂😂. Those drone shots though, and the way you captured the contrasting colours at dusk... I'm speechless. Absolutely incredible.

It blows me away how much your videos (and Cheveyo's Aussie accent) have improved in the 12 months I have been watching them (and they were quite good to start with). The scenes with the kids at Marble Bar were particularly touching. But so are your cutaways to the scenery. Looking forward to watching more as you make your way down to Tassie. Safe travels.

I dont know about diluted fuel but headwinds will increase your fuel consumption by those sort of amounts. Just got back from a trip through central Australia towing a 3.1T van fuel consumption was normally around 16ltrs/100kms but some days driving into a headwind it went over 20. The same with a tailwind it dropped to 14.

10:30 We used to have peanut butter and honey sandwiches when we were younger but tbf seedless jam (sweet) and peanut butter (savoury) probably go together just as well.

So good to see the parts of Australia we’ve not yet got to. And dark Tim Tams is a good choice. Port or Baileys works for the slam too!

I was so emotional at the end during those sunset shots. Time stood still for you both, it felt like you had the entire world to yourself. Australia is the country that keeps on giving, so much beauty to discover - especially in the most unassuming places! Love watching your videos and following along your journey ❤️

Oh wow guys, I really love that you not only interacted with those First Nation kids, but that you also chose to show the interaction in your video. It's so culturally important that our First Nation people are not only acknowledged, but also that they are not all exoticised as all living on tribal lands (even though showing that is super important too). So a big thanks to both of you for really allowing Australia to present itself to you instead of forcing your own ideas on what Australia should be. 💕

Incredible video as always. This one and the last one have been so precious, the gorge from the last video and the drone shots from this one were just so pretty. Enjoy the rest of Australia guys. Oh and, those kids from Marble Bar were so cool. I'm sure they will remember you forever and vice versa.

Rookie error with the milk Cheveyo 😂. The drone footage is mint guys. You are doing a fantastic job of capturing the absolute vastness of our country. It really stirs up emotions just seeing how beautiful it is out there.

The red dust is everywhere in outback Australia. It’s mostly hematite/ goethite dust (iron oxides). I’m not surprised you see so much more of it at Port Headland. Those are the main minerals mined in the Pilbara and shipped out from there

I just got back from a 10 day adventure in Darwin-Litchfield-Katherine-Kakadu-Darwin, (20 year old bucket list ticked off) was staring at that very same moon you watched...wasn’t it incredible with those sunsets!! I could watch you two discover this country’s treasures all day! You know you are both adopted Aussies now right? Welcome home!

Fun Fact: Marble Bar is known as 'the hottest town in Australia' a fact which is still recorded by the Guinness Book of Records. For 161 consecutive days to 20 April 1924 the temperature in the town never dropped below 100°F (37.8°C). This record still stands after over eighty years. During all the time that records have been kept, the temperature at the town has never dropped below 0°C. Those Wallabies in the Caravan Park at 80 mile Beach are Agile Wallabies. All through that area are also Red Kangaroos (Macropus Rufus), allegedly the largest Kangaroo in Australia.
