In this video we look at traditions and experiences in Denmark that confuse foreigners and even seem weird to visitors during the summer. Derek is joined by none other than himself, but from 2017. The "old Derek" has a lot of strange reactions to things that seemed really weird at first after moving to Denmark from the United States.
Now, in the end - none of these things are "weird" - they're just different. Danish culture is beautiful and fun to learn about, and it would be really boring if we were all the same! That said, there are still a lot for surprises for people who move to Denmark or travel to Denmark and see these unique traditions and experiences.
Here are some of the things about living in Denmark that surprised 2017 me and explanations from 2023 me based on all that I've learned from living with the Danes.

These things all make us Danes seem certifiably insane. Especially the annual witch-burnings on Saint Hans' Eve. I've tried explaining that tradition to some friends from other countries, and they genuinely seemed to think we're insane.

"Oh, we still burn witches. Well, not real witches... we know witches aren't real. No, but we put on a straw witch on a bonfire so the witches will go to Germany. We celebrate this on Sct. Hans Eve... no, we have no idea who that is or why."

I think we could and probably should take out these effigies. I sure wouldn't miss them. For Sankt Hans, it's the bonfire and the singing that are the good parts. And watching graduated students burn their old homework reminds us all just how good it feels finally to be done with all that shit. Have you ever had a nightmare where you were late to turn in a paper and were stressed out about it, only to wake up and realize that it was only a dream and you graduated and NEVER have to go through that again? It's such an amazing feeling of relief. For Fastelavn we also don't have to have effigies of cats on the barrels, and I've already noticed that many don't.

The weirdness of Denmark is what makes it charming as a country. I was born and raised in Faroe Islands and moved here to Jylland at 16 ish (25 now, cinnamon and all), and I also seem to remember having a culture clash and having to learn a bunch of things about the culture, so I just count my blessings that I didn't have to learn the language at the same time 😅. But I really enjoyed getting to know the traditions, and celebrating them with my family, and especially drawing similarities between my former home country and Denmark, and telling people about what we used to do when I was a kid :D.
@RobeTrotting

Perfectly said! It's only weird until you ask questions, get to know the traditions and their background, and jump into them when and how you can. We feel really fortunate to now have two sets of "weird" cultural experiences :)

Actually about the graduation caps: you can see which study you graduated from, from the colour of the band HTX (the science studies) are navy blue HHX (economics) are royal blue HF (2 year studies) are light blue STX (the version where you just continue your grade school but expand it) is red/maroon (it’s the one I graduated from last year heyo) EUX (usually they have a skill trade but also a condensed version of the STX) is Grey Hairdressers wear Pink SOSU helpers (they’re in the nursing industry but are not nurses) wear light purple SOSU assistants (again they’re in the nursing industry but are neither helpers or nurses) wear dark purple Purple and yellow hats are for the new generation of daycare workers It’s very interesting. Almost all of the different studies have their own colour. My hat was black with a maroon band because I had 5 different A levels

Summer solstice in Denmark is on the 23 of June and the longest day of the year is on the 21st of June. After the 21st it gets darker. In winter time the sun sets 15:30 and it only begins to get light at around 8-ish in the morning.

I just got back from a visit to Denmark. The summer heat has increased since I lived there 20 years ago. This year, Danes had a good 4 weeks or so of just sun and heat every day, which is very unusual, and much longer than just a "weekend". My uncle in Fyn said he had to hose water his garden just to keep it alive. My best friend from my school days in Denmark said the weather has changed a lot since I left 20 years ago, the snow is like slushy drinks now, not much snow anymore and the summer months are warmer. It was so hot this year, that they had to cancel the fire and burning of witches at every Sank Hans celebration around Denmark, which was a shame, but understandably, safety comes first. In Australia, any fires or bon fires or any fire at all, is completely banned every year around summer, so I get that completely. As an Australian too, the lack of air conditioning was unbearable, heat in Denmark is like the sticky humid heat you get in Thailand. Heat in Australia is dry and humid but not sticky.

While dancing the couple is surrounded by the guests. They slowly getting closer towards the couple in time for them to kiss at the end of the Waltz. The dance must be danced before midnight.

Some easy to spot with studenterhuer. 1 if there is a triangel cut into the sun protecter, they puked 2 if a box is cut into the sun protecter, they drank 24 beer in 24 hours. 3 if their cross is upside down, they kissed someone of the same gender 4 if the sun protecter has removed, they has been tovthe hospital because of to much alcohol 5 if their is bitemarks in the sun protector it is meant to mean good luck in life 6 if studenterhuen is rotarded means that you have been up 24 hours There are so many

The studenterhue is actually remains of the same tradition as the americans getting the cap when they graduate college, both being the academic uniform at university, the difference is just in denmark you get the hat at graduating highschool so you have the hat before you start university, offcourse nobody wears it while going to university.

Yes, Sankt Hans eve is a cozy tradition, with the singing around a bonfire, but not when we're having a draught 😉 This year wasn't the first time, we haven't been able to have bonfire on Sankt Hans. We are mostly a country that gets a lot of rain, however, every once in a while, we have years with dry Spring and Summer, which causes fire bans.

Literal translation except changing Long and ass around for better flow : Røv lang solskin. Another translation which I would rather use for the context: Røv lang dag. Which would translate back into english as long ass day. The latter saying is more commonly used to refer to a long or exhausting work day, but with the right context can be used to refer to the longer days during summer.

Regarding studenterrundten, here in Esbjerg, we have a tradition, not sure if the copenhagen folks does this as well, but we have this roundabout where all the folks run naked around, usually the women have more clothes one unless they're frisky and don't give a single f, but the lads let it all hang out and run around that sucker while everyone is hunking their horns and congratulating them, it's weird as I live so close I can always hear whenever the students jump off that and do their run.

Wish you would have mentioned the singing. People sing together regardless of skill. It is common at the summer solstice and it has roots to protests toward the German occupation during WW2. It's also very common at Christmas and often used as a substitute for a speech at parties. Singing together is a thing in Denmark and probably more common at an amateur level than most other places.

I am an actual Dane. I don't live in Copenhagen ... news flash not all of Denmark is the capital, take it from me i have been in every part of the country. So i get to see traditions and sights from all over the place, this video is super accurate and even more so than most others i have seen like this one. But remember that all parts of Denmark have different traditions, some places have completely different ones depending on history and local urban legends. Around where i live in the Marshlands of Denmark the most common of witch is Nøkken... shoutout to any Rainbow Six players out there, and around Copenhagen you will see more of the party culture that you don't see in my part of the country. Okay... we all party, hard. But over here we don't engage in the same kind of it as you see in Copenhagen. A great video, i love to see our beautiful country being more in the spotlight. Its a diverse place, but i am more familiar with the wetlands traditions of the west and midwest parts of Denmark and yes we are a tiny country but we are almost as diverse in dialect and traditions as the US. Thanks for the great video and even though i make videos about the Danish railway network, i can provide some input from my knowledge of my home country as well! -Thanks a lot
@RobeTrotting

I don’t need the “news flash” and condescending regional conflict part - I don’t think anyone believes Denmark is only Copenhagen and I certainly never say that. It’s where I live so it’s where I make videos and where my perspectives come from. I get that you all hate on your capital - I just get sick of hearing it in the comments all the time. I also find some irony in that constant demand for recognition of regional identity. Coming from a country with much more regional diversity and sheer size/number of regions, I’d love that treatment instead of people thinking they know America or Americans from one media narrative or a holiday in New York City.

I don't know if you'll find this out when researching studenterhuen but I'll just say it here. The black studenterhue has 2 versions - one for those with more A-level (Highest level in Gymnasium) than "needed" this one is hard like the white counterparts. I personally got a Black model based on the ones traditionally worn all through higher education as you told. It was also black, but is not limited to more A-level than 2 subjects. I don't know if it has changed - but when I graduated it was mostly for students with A levels in history or others that wanted to honor the history of the cap (as I did as my dad was a historian).

I graduated high school under the old system with only a small selection of fixed level combinations such as "languages - classic" (perfect for future historians and priests), "languages - modern", "languages + society" etc. and for the other half of academic pursuit "math + physics" (STEM hardcore) "math + nature" (more for future doctors, biologists etc.), "math + society" etc. Then they changed it into lots of elective course levels, with every university course setting its own entrance requirement combinations .
@mariehm86

@@johndododoe1411 I was started on the first year of the new system - so that must be why it changed. I also took the black 18-something in remeberance of my dad who was a historian before he died when I was 12.
