When I was seven or eight, my family was at Disneyland in CA; my mom and I were in line waiting to see Pluto and this group cut the line in front of us. I turned to my mom and said in a confused voice, "Mom? That's not fair, why didn't they wait in line like the rest of us?" My mom replied, "I know sweetheart, but you'll get your turn to see Pluto." Next thing I know, Pluto is pulling me to the front of the line! He heard me and decided to make me feel extra speical.

One of my most cherished Disney memories also happens to be an awkward character interaction. When I was twelve, I went to Disney World for the first time, with my mom, my aunt, and my cousin. One day we went to a character breakfast, but I was in my snotty, "I'm too old for this" phase, so I refused to interact with any of the characters. Most of them seemed to take the hint and concentrated on the other guests, but Pluto... Pluto made it his personal mission to force me to lighten up and have some fun. For the entire time that he was at our table, he would not stop licking me with his tongue, and putting his mouth over my head like he was trying to eat me, until I finally couldn't hold my laughter anymore and gave up trying. My mom and I still joke about it years later. For what it's worth, now I'm a single adult male, and I have no shame when it comes to meeting characters by myself and treating them as the actual character. Sure, it's silly, but what better place for a little silliness than Disney?

Being an adult who loves to meet characters, you can tell some aren't into it and then some act just like they would with a child. I had a similar experience with Cinderella. She is one of my favorites and it was the first time I went into a meet and greet alone and she just said hello and posed for the pictures. It made me sad because I was decked out in Cinderella merch. However, Elena turned the whole experience around. She was so bubbly and nice.

I went to Disney World for my senior trip, and I thought I would have a more hi-bye experience since I was an adult. I still made a special autograph book, with a drawing of the characters to sign, and all my characters experiences were MAGICAL! Mickey and Minnie gave me little diplomas, Anna and I had a long talk about Elsa, Chip stayed at our table to look through my book, Sofia and I got twenty pictures together acting out my graduation and she even gave me a special autograph. That's only a couple memories I made!

@@olivia_simone Of course, I remember hearing that the characters are not allowed to break a hug. The guest has to be the one to break the hug. If the guest breaks the hug, then it's okay...but if they go back for another hug, then you hug them again. I think it was because you never know how much that person needs that hug. But that sounds crazy...maybe the kid had Aspergers or Autism?
@1380beagle5 жыл бұрын
I’m going to bust out my soap box for one quick second...this young man, more than likely, had some developmental issues since he was unable to understand that this wasn’t ok. While his mom should have helped him (and the character) with this, I think parents of kids with disabilities don’t often get to see their kids get to be so blissfully happy. I think they sometimes see it through rose colored glasses without seeing the reality that the person in the costume is being crushed. Let’s take a quick second before judging.
@ShalmendoGlineux4 жыл бұрын
@@1380beagle @wolfmyth100 I have Autism, and social anxiety (also i'm 36 years old as of this writing) I can safely say that TOO many parents are underequipped and under informed on how to actually make sure their child can grow up happy and healthy. My father was a sociology professor and was constantly touting his knowledge of human behaviour. Despite this, he failed to support me properly in A LOT of ways and I ended up with several developmental issues that could have been avoided if he had been capable of understanding that I am Autistic and I have certain special needs that can make me beyond miserable while the same things don't bother anyone else in the slightest. This lead to a lot of silent trauma. He didn't even know how to handle it and kept telling me things like 'keep it inside' because he didn't know how to deal with my resulting outbursts and emotional instability. That's... not great for someone who claimed to be a student of behaviour. Granted Autism wasn't being diagnosed way back then, not very often anyway, and I'm sure I slipped through the cracks of diagnosis, but I almost wonder if it was partly down to some kind of denialism on my father's part who didn't want to accept he had a child that was so different and had special needs.

Also, My awkward moment was at Disneyland when I was like 17. I hadn't met characters in a few years so, I thought I was too old... so basically I was a little nervous when I saw Peter Pan (my favorite Disney character of all time) Well my mom was pretty supportive.. she waited in the Looong line with me and I was already embarrassed thinking that I was too old to meet a character I had asked my little brother if he would meet him with me ,but my little brother had no interest so, they both waited patiently for me. It was finally my turn and Peter Pan right away LEAVES me standing there.. to go to a little toddler in line who's doing a little dance and he starts doing a little dance with her so, I stood there mortified doing nothing some people in the line were even starring back at me a little shockked. It was Like if I shouldn't have been there honestly. He came back and didn't really talk to me either he was just like "Let's Take a picture :D " and posed. Basically like Hurry up and leave already so, that was it.. It was sad. I haven't met Peter Pan since then.

You know, I actually had a... I wouldn’t call it bad, but it wasn’t very impressive, interaction with Cinderella. She didn’t seem like Cinderella, she seemed like an actress who was bored and just wasn’t having the best day ever. Me and my bestie were dressed as Anastasia and Drisella. She didn’t even really greet us, she just sorta crossed her arms and she was like “did you visit my sisters today” and the rest of the conversation she just seemed to be in a bad mood, and it just didn’t feel genuine. rapunzel was hilarious (she’s my favorite princess). it was the same day, so me and my bestie went up to her and she noticed we were dressed like them, and she went to talk about their dresses and she even considered asking them for help in making a dress with a poofier skirt, as it was better for dancing, but not too poofy, because it wasn’t best for running or jumping. afterwords, rapunzel went to pose for the picture, and I went and put my arm around her waist, but my friend and the photopass girl were zoned out for a second and Rapunzel and I lost it when my friend and the photopass girl snapped out of their trance

I met a pocahontas last november and she was kind of like the cinderella you talked about here. I mean, i logically understand how tiring their jobs could be (especially in the heat when they’re outside), and they can’t spend too long interacting with one guest when there’s a lot more in line. But honestly as an awkward teenager to start with, she just seemed kind of uninterested and it just made me feel kind of insecure?? that sounds kind of stupid but yeah. I obviously respect the characters and stuff, but it just made me feel a little sad how this happens more commonly when you’re not a little kid anymore :/ but if i ever go back one day, i feel like i’ll be more prepared for what to say when i meet characters :^) though pocahontas was kind of a shame, i kind of understood so i didn’t let it ruin the magic

@ShalmendoGlineux4 жыл бұрын
I partly agree with this but it's HARD to find a good balance! Yes the person WHO WAITED 30 MINUTES IN THE LINE should be considered first because they waited that whole freaking time and were patient and followed the rules. I would have been quite upset if some toddler just ran in without waiting in line and cut infront of me right before I finally got to meet a character I was eager to see. On the other hand that child doesn't have an understanding of waiting in lines and following rules due to being so young... But I would have certainly said something to the parents. I can imagine how frustrating it would be for a kid to see a great disney character 'over there' and rush over to hug them only to have mom or dad say no. That might be a tantrum trigger right there, or at least severe disappointment which could lead to sobbing. It's a REAL hard problem to solve. People can try to be understanding, but parents really need to step up their responsibility and remember that the person that just got cut off waited in that line for who knows how long while their kid just runs in... it's very upsetting from multiple angles, and again, dealing with it is a minefield. Being Autistic and having social anxiety it would be a burden on me to wait calmly and patiently in that line for 20 minutes (or however long) and see the 'payoff' coming only to get cut off like that... I probly wouldn't have a tantrum but I would be quite upset and glare at the parents. (I actually have a mild dislike of kids because they overstimulate me instantly... why am I going to disney then? x.x I don't have a choice if I want to experience any Disney magic, so I tend to bring earphones and such to manage stimulation issues, but there's only so much accommodations can do). Bottom line, parents be responsible and respect the people who waited in line, Don't be the family that deserves to have a Disney Day, PLEASE.

I love you Disney experience videos! Thank you for posting all of your fun adventures. My most awkward experience was at Epcot in the UK Pavilion to meet Mary Poppins. I was so excited to meet her, as she is my favorite non animated character. I knew that her current meet and greet was ending and I asked her attendant where I should stand for her next one. I was going to wait and make sure I saw her. He said stand right there. I did and made sure I was the first one in line. It got really crowded as it got closer to her meet and greet. Once she came out the attendant called us over, this little girl ran up to her. I was a little surprised as I hadn't seen her in the line. The family that was next after me started to yell that she wasn't in line and the girls mother said that she had been waiting first in line this whole time. The attendant tried his very best to control the situation but there was a lot of yelling and not so nice DIsney words being said between parents. I said it was fine for the girl to meet Mary and that I would wait. But it was ruined. Mary did't really interact with me at all despite my trying to talk to her. But I did meet Mary and Bert at Hollywood Studios later during my trip and it was fantastic. BERT is amazing performer. The best character experience I had was also at Epcot in China pavilion to meet Mulan. The attendant let us be the last family of the day, she didn't have to she could have just said that it was closed. So we waited about 45 minutes to an hour to meet her. The attendant talked us and really wanted to get to know our family. My little one is 5 and is not a fan of any princess or human character only the furry kind. He was not impressed at all by Mulan. When it was our family's turn Mulan was wonderful. She talked to all of us, about everything, Mushu, being brave and and details from her story. She took pictures with all of us expect my youngest who was hiding. She then played hide and seek with him in that auditorium type area liking chasing him and laughing with him alone. He finally warmed up to her so we could get a picture. The interaction must have been 15-20 minutes. My ten year old boy who is not impressed by much these days still talks about Mulan and that experience. We have had a lot of wonderful character experiences but this was by far the best we ever had.

So we go to Epcot and get in line to see Goofy. Not sure if the actor sensed my hesitancy or what, but they noticed my shirt with Mushu on it, made it obvious they were reading it, and then started pointing excitedly towards China. I thought it was cute so, yeah I became less shy and pretended to be excited that they were pointing to where I could meet Mushu. I liked that they were having fun with a group of 30/40 childless year olds.

I’m someone who kinda has a fear of characters 😂 But with Disney, I would make an exception for some characters, specifically my favorites. My main favorite being Stitch, I always make sure I go meet him before I go! The first time I met Stitch was the absolute best!!! He pointed out my stitch shirt and it was quite obvious he was my favorite character by the huge smile on my face and me jumping against the walls when I was waiting. He took many pictures with me! One with both of us hugging with our face squished together and another with us facing back to back and crossing our arms. He was the absolute best! (mind that I was 15 when i met him first). Two years pass and I go to Disney again for my high school graduation celebration. I went to meet Stitch and honestly, I was a bit disappointed... I was still excited as heck when waiting in line and my face was numb with my smile. But once I got to meet him, he honestly seemed very bored and just wanted to get it over with. Before I could even say hi, he just motioned over to take a photo, he didn’t even touch me or hug me. I offered a hug but he just made the “rawr” position (you know what i mean) and posed for the camera... I had a hat on with all my stitch pins and I asked if he could sign my hat. He did then waved bye. I walked away and my whole family was just staring at me to wait for my reaction, cause they saw how uncomfortable I got the moment Stitch motioned me over. Even though that encounter (haha alien encounter) wasn’t the greatest, the first time meeting him will still be my highlight memory of him and will still continue to meet him! No matter what age i am.

I was scared of the characters when I was younger, and I grew up with like.. I guess you'd say 'a mascot phobia'. This is a big problem for someone who's also a furry and never intended to go to a furcon because there are a lot of similiar fursuits at those EVERYWHERE (i'd seen video that made me nervous). But I forced myself to go to a few furcons and basically gave myself exposure therapy (With the loving support of my significant other) and I basically cured myself! (Real success story, I should write a book!) Now that I'm over my fears I REALLY want to meet as many characters as I can, face and non, to make up for my years of missed experiences. Another problem is that my family took a militaristic approach to Disney vacations and we had to squeeze AS MUCH stuff into every minute as possible... this resulted in us running back and forth across the park all day going on all the rides in a day and various other high stress shennanigans, which left NO ROOM for anything else, including character meets, so I never had the opportunity either, even though I had asked for it on many occasions. I was the youngest child so i was always kind of an afterthought since the family was so busy doing everything my two oldest brothers wanted instead. I'm making this upcoming trip more about me (I've planned to get married at Disney afterall) and I fully intend to go to several meet and greets, even with the princesses. I don't care what my family thinks, I'm on a mission! lol.

Since it was my first time ever going I decided to catch up on character interactions that I never got to do as a child, and Alice and Tiana are my all time favorite characters. Alice was by far the best interaction o had the whole trip and she probably thought I was funny by how I was decked in full on Alice stuff and shaking from excitement. Though Tiana's was by far the worst. The whole time I was trying to interact she just had this expression like I was a giant nuisance and just nodded and smiled until she could force me into a picture. It was heartbreaking because Rapunzel before her was so great and Tiana was my all time fave princess and she sort of ruined character meet and greets for me :/

Fun to hear these stories. We took our kids for their first time 2 years ago. We didn't spend any time waiting in character lines because we wanted to maximize ride time and my kids are pretty shy around them. At Epcot, we were walking by a building with glass windows - I think the Art of Disney building - and we saw Belle just standing there with her cast members and nobody around. She was my 4-year-old's favorite, so we just walked in the door and right up to her. She was so sweet and did pictures and talked to my daughter for awhile. Then we saw Mary Poppins a few yards down around the curved hall, so we walked over and did the same with her. Again, she was so nice and did the pictures and talking. Then I look a little further down the hallway and see a line of people, doh! We totally had just cut a huge line that started on the other side of the building and had no idea because they hadn't officially started! At least they were so nice about it, even though they probably thought we were cutting, eek! I felt pretty dumb.

My most awkward guest experience wasn't too bad--as it was mostly due to my own awkwardness. My family went to Disneyland when I was 9 or 10 and at the end of a really long, stressful day, we saw Goofy hanging out in the square by Main Street. There wasn't any wait and my mom really wanted to have at least one picture with a Disney character. My brother and I both felt like we were too old for it, but eventually I (as the youngest) agreed to take a picture with Goofy. I was pretty much sleep walking at that point and I think Goofy could tell, but the cast member did everything in their power to make it fun and memorable. Bright, happy, exaggerated hand gestures to help me wake up, a proper hug, and a nice side-hug for the picture. It's something that I really look back at with fondness, but I felt kind of bad for the cast member; I was exhausted and clearly unenthusiastic--a limp tree branch would have been more interactive than me at that point. I'm so sorry you were in such a painful situation!! That sounds horrifying!! DX That's awesome how protective you were of your partner! ^_^ It wasn't at Disney, but at the Arlington Six Flags is where I had a recent experience with mascot-type characters. I felt so sorry for them, because it was at LEAST 105 degrees outside, and when Wile E. Coyote came to hug me and pose for a photo, he was swaying terribly. I was really concerned and told him to try his best to stay cool. I hope the poor guy got a break soon!!

Peter Pan has always been my favorite character, and I was never able to find him at Disneyland except in parades. My freshman year of college, I spent a lot of my day trying to find him and when I finally did, I got so excited because I had been waiting for like 10 years to find this character. I walked up to him but he started running away.. and I thought he was sort of being playful because he’s Peter Pan ya know? But he kept running away and I tried to mention how he was my favorite character and I had been trying to find him for years, but he kept ignoring me and then quickly posed for a picture with me and ran off. I know it’s sort of in his character to be silly, but I had seen so many videos of Peter being really sweet with guests, so I was really disappointed to have him continually run away and ignore me after I had spent over an hour walking around trying to find him. And it wasn’t like there was a line or anything because he had just been walking around

I'm 30 (look younger, though) and went to meet my favourite, princess Anna, for the first time, I had a t-shirt with the same design she has on her vest. I told her she was my favourite and i relate to her the most. She was so incredibly sweet to me, talked to me a lot, gave me many hugs and generally speaking, was totally awesome and amazing, she made my whole trip. Three days later, right before going home, i went there again hoping to get the same performer - unfortunately a different woman was there and she clearly had an attitude of "just take a picture and go already", didn't even smile. So i just said a word or two, took a picture and went to Elsa, as i knew i wouldn't enjoy a conversation with Anna that time. I was on a solo trip and met a couple of characters and except for the second Anna, all of them treated me very nicely and i loved meeting them. Besides, the first Anna made it up for me in advance ;) So i simply pretend the second meeting never happened.

@@olivia_simone it was incredibly magical! It was quite important to me to have a nice interaction because 1. she's my favourite, 2. she doesn't do m&g in DLP (my closest park) and it was my very first time meeting her, 3. it was my first WDW trip and due to the distance i won't come back anytime soon. So before coming there i was worried i won't enjoy it for whatever reason. But Anna was absolutely wonderful and the sweetest person i met there, i'm so glad this woman was my first character experience with Anna, she was totally worth melting for!

I feel like I've never had a truly awkward experience, but I did have an underwhelming Peter Pan experience. I was first in line for his meet and greet and there were about 10-15 people behind me. All adults, about 5 or 6 groups. Peter was running 5 minutes late and so I think he was nervous about getting to see everyone, but in videos he has always been the most playful and personable, but he made some jokes about a candy bag on the ground that blew over (like Hook was trying to trick him), and did a quick pose and that was it. Also the photopass person wasn't paying attention so I came away with only one photo which was disappointing. Peter was still awesome, I just with the interaction was more personal.

I went last Halloween. Friends I went with stayed at the hotel one day and I went to Epcot by myself, it was Halloween day. We were going to MNSSHP that night. I had a funny experience with Chip n' Dale at Hollywood Studios in April, I was with my friend Colby at the time. I had brought along a Chip'n'Dale plush and a MagicBand and their MagicBandits. Well, guess what happened? Dale was the first one to point out the plushies! I was like, "that looks like you guys!" I handed the plushies over to them (the plushies were connected by the same thing that holds clothing labels) and they play "tug of war" with the plushies. Next thing I know, Dale grabs hold of my left arm (which has the Chip'n'Dale MagicBand with matching MagicBandits) points himself out, and then I see Dale take off my MagicBand (IDK HOW the fur characters can remove one's MagicBand) and I hear a "he's so excited!" just as Dale starts to run off with it. The blueberry was like "Hey where are you going?!" to Dale. He ran off to the umbrella with it, and she says "What!? What are you doing?!" And Dale did come back, I told them that I was their "biggest fan", Chip pats Colby on the back and hugs me as Dale signs his autograph. Colby also put his Stitch hat on Chip, I do the same thing putting my Mickey hat on Dale, and he tries to fit my MagicBand to his nose! I then ask them "Any of you been getting into trouble recently?" Dale points to Chip, I said "Chip has?" Then Chip points to Dale, and I'm like "Oh it doesn't matter both of you have been getting into trouble recently!" Now it gets to the funny part, right after the PP photographer took Colby's picture with them, Dale burped into his ear! Just as we were about to leave, Chip still had the plushes. I told him that they were mine, I got them back and the blueberry told him "Don't worry Chip we'll get your own later..." If you watch this video here from 21:07-23:27: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGfLfYmkbZhnpqs you'll see most of the interaction.

The awkward part of this was that ONLY Chip hugged me, I told them both I was their biggest fan, seems like Dale was too distracted with my MagicBand. Then again, Dale will be Dale.

When I go to Disney (in November yayyy) I’m going to ask of of the attendants for a picture. We never really give them enough credit, they are the ones who make the meet and greets happen 😊
@shortstackedits97635 жыл бұрын
For me, character meet and greet’s are really hit or miss. Luckily enough, compared with all the characters I’ve met there have only really been two disappointing experiences but everything else has been perfect! There must be something about Cinderella tho haha. When I met her in Disneyland late 2018, you could tell she must have been tired or over it (maybe it was almost her time to return to the castle for the afternoon, im not sure) but she was very brush-off-ish. Maybe it’s also because I’m not a little kid but what are you going to do 🤷🏻♀️. That being said, Snow White and Ariel (also on the rotation) were both lovely, and I have more of an appreciation for Snow after meeting her! My other disappointing experience was with Peter Quill in Hollywood Studios. It was just after GOTG2 came out, and to have him on Florida property (with baby groot, mind you) was A Big Deal. Anyway, the first time around, I called him Star-Prince (a nod to the movie) but he kinda just nodded it off and didn’t really respond. I had the right mind to return, and Peter’s other best friend was so much nicer! We had a dance battle, talked about music, and about Gamora! So far, my fave characters to meet are Tiana, Rapunzel and Eugene, Ariel and Eric, Gaston (!!!! ICON !!!!!), Rey, Chewbacca, BB-8, Minnie and Spider-Man! There was this one great friend of Cap who I met that I suspect was also one of Gaston’s best friends as he recognised me (and id never met Cap before) and we had great chemistry, I could’ve talked to him all day! I really would love to meet Thor and Captain Marvel when she arrives in the parks! (Also sorry for the mini essay in your comments section, but no one else really likes to listen to me except the silent void of the Internet)

Omg I had a VERY similar experience with Cinderella, it was my birthday week at Disney, we went to all 4 parks it was awesome!!! I went to Magic Kingdom, which was our 3rd park, after that was Epcot. I went into Bibbity Bobbity boutique and I got dressed up as Cinderella, because she was my favorite Disney princess at the time. And so I really wanted to meet her, and the lines were like 5mins long so we went in to see both Rapunzel and Cinderella. We first went to meet Rapunzel, then we got directed to the Cinderella line to meet her. I was so excited, I think I was about like 9-10 years old, so it was pretty amazing to meet your favorite princess, and look like them at the same time!!! It was our turn to meet her, and as soon as a gave her a hug I said,” Your my most favorite princesses ever!!!” And after that she laughed and turned me around not saying anything to take the picture. I was confused, but I shrugged it off, and enjoyed the rest of the time I had with her. I then asked her to sign my Autograph book 📖 and she did. And as she was signing it I asked her,” Where’s the Fairygod Mother?”, and she goes,” Ummmm....I think she is out there somewhere?😒” Inside my head I was thinking,” What the heck?!” Why would Cinderella, one of the sweetest princesses be like this?! Then, she gave me my book and didn’t say anything else. I was mad, but it was my birthday so I just enjoyed the rest of my day.😒🎉💕🎁🎂

When my youngest was about three, and VERY shy, we took both girls to breakfast in Cinderella’s castle. She talked about meeting Aurora for months before. When she came around to our table, I said “Aurora, we’re so excited that you’re here. You’re my daughter’s favorite!” She looked down at her, smiled snarkily and said nothing. She let us take a picture but I was livid, my child was crushed and it ruined breakfast. Thankfully Snow White was AMAZING and then became the new favorite!

When I was 14 and went to disneyland a few years ago, i was SO EXCITED to meet Tiana cause she's my all time favorite character! When i was waiting in line, she was so sweet to all the kids, but when it was my time to meet her, she didn't even say anything, just "hi", and put her arm around me for the picture, she didn't even say bye... i already noticed she didn't care for me at all so i didn't say anything but hello and bye.

Mine isn't really an awkward interaction with a character or that but it was weird for me because I guess I've always been kind of a "witchy" person. So, when I was in 2nd grade my family and I went to Disneyland here in California and we planned the trip to celebrate my 8th birthday. We were waiting in line for that thing where you meet all of the princesses. (I'm not sure if it was in Ariel's Grotto because we had also made reservations to go there and there was a princess meeting area.) There was this one girl who I believe was directly in front of us (Maybe 1-2 families in front of us at most.) She was talking to Mulan or some person controlling the line and she (little girl) was just talking A LOT. She was maybe 5-8 years old but she was super jumpy and hyperactive. So while we were in line they were asking trivia questions about the princesses and they were directed at all of us kids waiting in line going kid to kid. But this little girl just kept answering ALL of the questions being asked, mind you they weren't aimed at her, they were asking other kids in line like me. So she just kept blurting out answers and hogging all of the attention and her parents weren't doing anything about it. She took so long with every single princess just talking and talking about nonsense with them. And even as an 8-year-old I was annoyed and frustrated with her and would directly look at the girl and roll my eyes at her. (That was so mean of me! I can't believe myself!) But none of the cast members did anything to stop the princesses from being so focused on her more than anyone else.

YIKES!!!! I can TOTALLY see that happening! Parents tend to lose focus of the whole picture while they're at Disney and only attend to their child. Which I get but it does definitely impact other guests' experiences!
