I think oblievačka is not as cruel as some people describe it. I think that little splash of water, and soft whipping with laugh is just cute, and I dont really think, that men should hurt anybody with it or do it harshly. My old grandpa is such a gentleman, he just wash your hands with glass of water, spray you with a cologne and give a cross sign on your forehead :D

@@ChasingKimberly actually that watering this is from pagan times when woman represented the nature, the earth, the divine feminine and you nurture the soil with water. Its all a symbolism, its not perverse as some people think it is. However I believe its so mechanical now, that people don't even know why they are doing it.

50€? Damn, as a kid i get 10 crowns, which is like 0,30€. But money was not important, older guys get alcohol, kids were rewarded with chocolate egg or kraslica, we get invited in the house for cookies and chlebíček. We visited only family or friends, sometimes neighboors (we are living in Bratislava). I think visiting all the family was most rewarding. Whiping was never cruel, and we were careful with water. But this tradition dies out with older generation. A pity.

Hi Kim, love your todays video, and pls dont worry yourself too much if something does not add up or at least does not on first. Well one connection you mentioned with the egg respectively chicks has something to do with new life. Decorating them is something different. You can find some which do have some kind of artistic value, the rest are just NICE (meaning naive infantile chidish expressions). Totally agree with you, weird days with weird things happening. Good for those enjoying, supporting and living it, but me myself i am like old man on the porch saying Son get off my lawn!

It can be alright if you know normal men but I know some girls who were friends with firefighters and of course those guys came to visit them with the whole firetruck and splashed them with hoses outside. It can be quite cold outside like this year so ..yikes. Also in northern areas some guys just throw girls right into streams, not caring if it's snowing or not. Only good thing about pandemic is that this tradition stopped for a moment lol

Most of those symbols - eggs, bunnies, flowers, chickens &c. - have a very simple and straightforward meaning: a new life, winter being finally over and spring beginning. In the old, medieval, times it was all the more important as winter was simply a period of the year that had to be survived, especially for poorer people: not enough food, cold weather, long dark nights… And even the oblievačka and whipping are not meant merely for women's health and beauty but more importantly for their fertility, as bearing enough children was the only way for the society to survive, health care being virtually non-existent and wars, famines and other pleasantnesses of the kind taking their toll.

We use Bahniatka to decorate our house, and sometimes hang Kraslice from them. Everything has a symbol with nature and welcoming spring. The water is meant to make you fresh all year round, and whipping legs is meant to make you stronger. Kraslice represent spring and rebirth I think. Btw, you can also get your own back on your husband on the Tuesday after Easter Monday. That's when girls throw water on the guys... it's not official, but every girl does it 😉

Maybe it's weird for "strangers", but it's our ancient Slavic traditions and we like it, except girls, of course. 😉 And now something about those symbols, you were talking about, like lambs, yellow chickens, little bunnies, eggs etc. It's very easy to understand. It's because of incoming spring and newborn life, so that's why we decorate our homes with these symbols of spring and new upcoming lifes. These are also ancient Slavic habits, that have survived until today and we are proud, although we're Christians.

Easter in my elementary school class some 35 years ago: It was communism here in Slovakia, so colored chalks (among other necessities) were extremely rare and if a teacher had a set, she would carry it with her. On the Tuesday right after Easter-Monday one teacher left her set of colored chalks at the blackboard in our classroom right after the very first lesson of the day, nobody noticed. While it is impolite to splash girls with cold water after 12:00 on Easter-Monday, boys aged around 10 do not care and during each single intermission there was a water-splashing-war going on in our classroom. One of the running girls has made the chalk-set drop on the linoleum floor where it started melting in the accumulating amounts of water (just a little water was enough to melt it). By the time of lunch break, the tile-floors across the school (maybe 25 classrooms big) were decorated by rainbow-colored shoe-prints. And it was pretty obvious, that those were much more prevalent near our classroom. Well, most of the people were aware of the communism-prison everybody was "locked in", so maybe that was a factor in deciding not to impose any reprehensions for that.

Hi, great video ! This tradition for easter is combination of pagan tradition with the Christian tradition. Originally the tradtion was that only unmarried men were going together and visiting unmarried woman and splashing them with water and slightly whipping with the korbac so they would be healthy and beauty through the year. That is why the girls were happy to have many visitors because it meant that they are popular and beatiful. Nowadays it is a bit off hand and this tradition start to not make much sense. The decoration with young branches, eggs, baby chicks and bunnies is to symbolize the start of the spring where everything starts blooming again.

Slovak (and Czech) traditions are just the remnants of old pagan customs. Boys are whipping girls with willow cane to put a life strength of willow in them. Not sure about splashing water, it is not that common here in Czechia :-) All this is just celebration of life and fertility after a long cold winter. Not sure how it is in Philippines, but the seasons changing here was always a big thing. It influenced (and still influences) people a lot. And about girls being happy about being whipped and splashed - yes, because the more boys come to you, the more valuable you see you are. Of course that every girl wanted to be beautiful and loved, and this used to be every year's test. And it was also a possibility to meet with boys, maybe gain some love experience ...

When you live in village, then probably every man from family, friends and also some classmates from school come to splash you. In my case, it's my dad, uncles, cousins and my dad's cousins.. so it was probably 13 men (in years before Corona). And.. like 5 to 6 of my classmates 😂 (one of them is also my friend). I think boys from my class enjoyed it the most, because I was the only girl who they have to chase, because i run every year, and other girls don't and they are like "get over with it" and I'm like "gimme 5 seconds". Yes, it is annoying, but also fun... And one time my mom tell them to splash water on my sister... She said, that my friend's eyes literally sparked 😂. I have no Idea who enjoyed it more, the boys, me or my mom 😂.

The egg painting is really old tradition, it is believed it originated in Ukraine. Slavs even have legend about creation of the world, where heaven rooster had egg, which split in the half and 7 European rivers got out of it (Slav people considered rivers important). The bunny tradition is not so clear, but it can be derived from Celtic legend about Goddess of spring and bunny as her companion. Eggs were symbol of the life and new beginnings. Hope this helped!

The eggs, bunnies, lambs and chicks all symbolize fertility and rebirth after winter. It is a pagan tradition from before Christianity and it celebrates coming of spring

Kimberly Ester in Slovakia it's combination, one which is religions and Easter Monday is from deeper past it celebration of Spring and starting agricultural year. What you talking about Asch Wednesday that was in last millennium in Slovakia, today it's not the same as use to be. You had last dance before length, they buried the contrabass, during the length you had no music or any kind of entertainment. Oblievacka is for single girls only married woman in most part of Slovakia was without the water😁. Girls painted eggs kraslice before Easter. Egg is symbol of r rebirth starting Spring new season end of the winter. Most of the Slovakia in the past we agricultural so tradition are from there. These days lot of changes, Ester become commercialize and that's the influence of the west. So this is from me I Wish you Happy Easter, to both families in Philippines and Slovakia.

Sorry, I'm too lazy to write this in english (like someone else's comment below this video 😄) Peniaze sa dávajú deťom, dospelí dostávajú alkohol a čokoládové vajíčko.

So you see Kim, you end up finding that we are a lot like the Filipinos during the Easter holidays.History of Catholicism in our country, customs associated with it similar to yours (Ash Wednesday-ash, fasting-cuisine that you will not forget to mention, though🥕🥔🐟) versus paganism (bugs, watering on Easter Monday and others)PS:By the way, history-evil spirits in Slovakia versus Fillipina.Ask your husband if you want to use a swear word,,doparoma"-what does it mean?I wish you merry,,šibačku"😊

Má to kresťanskú symboliku práve so zmŕtvychvstaním Krista, lebo aj on "rozbil" moc smrti aby sme mali nový život. 😊

It's a tradition that you can do it till 12:00. That's why people start to go from house to house early in the morning. As you said, people are drunk because even if you do not want to drink, you have to drink. You need say that you are a driver otherwise they will not let you go until you have a shot.
