Weird New Jelly Paints? - Himi/Miya Jelly Gouache Set

Here is my quick little review on the brand new jelly paints! They are very strange but cool so far! I didn't really know what to expect with these guys because they were just a quick impulse by, but I had a really fun time with them and will definitely be using them more in the future! One of my sisters had mentioned to me that she kept seeing people on tiktok using these Himi jelly gouche paints and she bought a set, so naturally I did too.
Disclaimer: I am super unfamiliar with gouache, as you might be able to tell from this video. So if you are looking for someone who knows a lot about that medium, it's not going to be me. But I do plan on using them more in the future just to expand my creativity a little and push my skills. Gouache is a great medium that has always intrigued me so I'm excited to jump in.

I lifted only half of covering on each cup so the paint is less exposed and I can just push the tops back down when I'm done painting. I was also able to paint a little swatch on each since the cover is still on.

I’ve been painting with them for close to a year now, I love, love, love them, they travel great. The only down side is a few colors have started to harden, the purple-blue and my “darker” white, but water rehydrates them 😁. I wish they would have came with a color chart, but I made my own, the pallet included likes to fall out after awhile, but I love them, my tubes always get squished lol. Love your art work by the way.

RANDOM TIP: since the case seals so nicely... Remove the included palette - Create thin square sponges (or layered paper towel squares) which are the same thickness as the palette - Place them UNDER each paint container!! Before sealing - WET SPONGES & CLOSE for long-lasting paint moisture!! The space SAVED by removing the palette will be used up by the sponges, (hopefully) creating the same lid-to-paint seal... NOTE: I do not have this paint set, and don’t even paint!! I’m binge watching Emily’s videos (gotta love her!!) to learn all I can so I can be an awesome/involved daddy!! With that said, I can not guarantee my idea will provide optimal results without actually having the item in my hands.... My concern would be that the palette is somehow required to complete the proper seal that the case clearly boasts. I would think the lid will seal regardless of the palette, however, closing the lid without it would increase the gap between the paint and the lid (not talking about my idea where the sponges will close this gap).... Therefore the paint will have the room to leak out since the palette is not there. BUT - this WILL NOT MATTER if you use my sponge idea because you’ll NEVER want to handle this case in a way that it’s not sitting level (or else WATER can get into your paint!) So this issue is irrelevant using my idea, AND irrelevant if you remove the palette and handle the case in a level manner... HOPE THIS HELPS!

Gouache is a medium commonly used at Chinese art exams since they dry quick and can be mixed with water

I just got my first set of gouache and I’ve been struggling a bit with them BUT I have to say I love the end result. Also totally on board with not giving my money to amazon. One of the whites is a mixing white and the other is titanium white. The titanium one is better for making the colours more opaque! 🌼

I know you said you weren't familiar with gauche and it was like acrylics but it's supposed to be a mix of acrylic and watercolor. You can paint with it like acrylic like you did but unlike acrylic you can add as much water as you want to get a watercolor effect too. Thought that might be helpful

I’m so glad you mentioned their smell! Have watched other videos and no one has mentioned it. Thought it was just me that was bothered by it. Hoping the smell goes away over time.

I found it was mostly my Prussian blue seemed to be going bad and smelled like mildew. I removed that one and tossed it and now when I open the box they smell just like paint. Not sure if it's an issue with that color in general or just got a bad box though.

I haven't ever used amsterdam acrylics. I've been using a lot of artist loft acrylics and they in expensive but pretty good! I also really like liquitex heavy body acrylics.

I've had them for like a few months already and I'd say, I really LOVE them! Since it's gouache we're talking about, they're easy to use and because of their opaqueness, I can easily cover up my mistakes. One thing I kind of hate(?) is that they're really REALLY heavy (well having an amount of 30ml per color is still great tho). But to make them easier to use and access without me worrying about the weight, I chose to place some gouache in a palette. More like the same palette for storing watercolors. Even tho this set cracks when they're dry, reactivating them with water, is not that much of a big deal for me. Storing them dry is my preference.. I dunno about you tho. But using fresh gouache is better..
