Wallace and Kelso were not the first to wear helmets with heavy padding on the top. Chiefs' Hall-Of-Fame middle linebacker Willie Lanier had a big strip of padding down the center of his helmet after he had suffered a concussion in tackling an opposing running back during his rookie year in 1967. Lanier wore the padded helmet for the remainder of his career.

In the late '70s, Ridell made a few Dungard (the masks worn by John Williams) sort-of lookalike masks. Denver linebacker Randy Gradishar wore one in 1977, and Denver safety Steve Foley wore one in 1978.

I always liked the facemasks worn by Chiefs defensive players in the 60's and 70's. 3 bars one up the middle connected to the top and side, not a cage mask, although they were cool too. Minnesota and Houston players had these facemasks as well.

Some years ago, Ricky Jackson LB on the Saints had broken his jaw and his facemask was designed to prevent any contact to the jaw. If I remember correctly, his facemask was unique as well

I miss the old Schutt "Cow Catcher" design made popular by the Chiefs OL and DL in the late '60s. I switched from a Riddell square cage to one!

Scott Player was the last NFL player to wear the single bar - after the NFL banned it in 2004 they allowed players using it at the time to be grandfathered.

how could you miss Y.A. Tittle's classic? They bought a cabinet handle and put it on the side of his helmet so he could take it off. Defensive linemen, on the other hand, found it far more useful for sacks.

Anyone know the story behind my favorite cage, the "Auburn" running back mask? Widened double bar, with two vertical bars to the "visor" bar. Auburn alumns Joe Cribbs, James Brooks, Lionel James etc. etc. were the only guys who had that type, and then it went on to be a very common mask in both offensive and defensive backfields in the collegiate and pros.

I enjoyed this video I actually had not saw some of the real old ones. I like the Hannibal Lector mask the best. my only problem is the double helmet one I would not consider a face mask. I do remember the guy for the Bills wearing it. I thought Don Beebe wore one like that after he got flipped and landed on his head. I could be wrong because the double helmet Era I was still very young probably just started school and playing Pee-Wee football myself. when I played just about everyone on the team except for QB & Maybe best RB on team wore Thurman Thomas face mask. it had 1 single bar from chin up to top of face mask center then had 2 bars going across just below eye area and 1 at chin and 1 at top across top for head. I always hated that helmet cause it made your eyes to want to cross. Heck I was offensive lineman & we always got cruddy helmets and face masks. anyways cool video
