Even our own media makes America seem like such a terrible, scary place so crime seems more prevalent than it is. My town is clean, has good resources, barely any crime (we do have some teens that steal from unlocked cars or packages every so often but they are usually caught on ring doorbells). We have events all the time, non profits that help people with anything you could imagine, neighbors are always helping neighbors, events the whole town participates in etc. I feel like people outside the US think we’re all just fat, live in dirty cities and carry guns around all the time. In my 25 years, i have never once seen a gun on someone in public other than a police officer or witnessed any gun violence. I live outside of a big city and there is more crime down there but even still, both the residents of the city and the surrounding areas come together during times of tragedy.

Those Pass it On billboards have pissed me off ever since i had to drive past a pretty insensitive billboard on my way to work everyday. It said "At 16, cancer almost stopped me. Resilience. Pass it on." That's just the shittiest message to suggest that people can survive cancer if they just... try harder? Just... dont die? Millions of people try as hard as they can but a disease is shutting down their body. No amount of "Resilience" can stop metastasis.

I really feel for Scott with having to deal with that sewage issue. Back in 2016, my battalion got moved into these brand new barracks. Compared to what we had previously lived in, this was like a 5 star resort. It was only a couple of weeks later that problems began to arise. Elevators stopped working, power would go out for hours or even days, key cards wouldn't work on your door, etc. However, the worst issue to reveal itself was the plumbing. See, when the government puts out a contract to build these new structures, it will usually go to the lowest bidder. As we all know, you get what you pay for. And what did we get exactly? Nearly every single one of the rooms in the building had crossed plumbing. Meaning that sewage pipes were accidentally run to sinks, showers, and toilet water. All the lines were contaminated with human dung and urine. What did they do to fix this? Well, just rerouting the lines and then running water through it was good enough to them. Except, just like the lowest bidder for the construction, the same went for the repairs. After we finally moved in, we had nearly and entire floor of the building suffer sewage overflows in there rooms. Literally poured out from sink drains and the toilets all over the floors. Our command decided that it wasn't worth their while to have the bio-hazardous material cleaned by professionals and that instead us low level peasants would use communal mops. Imagine yourself and about 4 other men, in a room no larger than a 1 car garage with human shit and piss covering the floor and you're tasked with cleaning it up with no more than some garbage bags, a mop, and paper towels. That's what life is like for a private in the Marine Corps
