Very true and I say it a lot (not in the form of an expression, though): even if you love your children and give them everything, when they become adults, they will treat you like you treated your parents. By not caring about your parents, you are basically telling your kids old people don't matter, and, well, one day you will become old...

It’s interesting to see the influence of Norse on Slovene and other Slavic languages, the word hvaljen looks just like a Norse word, same as hvala, they have the typical Norse letter combination hv and the j pronounced as an y / i sound, and some words are like the Hungarian word - I highly recommend learning Slovene 2gether with Norse / Icelandic / Dutch / English / Norwegian / Gothic / Welsh and Hungarian, as they are way too epic and pretty not to know!

Very informative. It’s interesting to see how different the same sayings can be in different cultures/countries. We have a lot of the same sayings here but I feel like we go more straight to the point. On another note one of my favourite sayings from another country has to be from Germany. It’s funny yet brutal at the same time and oh so true most of the times. To be used when someone is doing something stupid the saying goes: “Lord, throw some brains from the heavens… …or stones as long as he hits the mark.” Apparently a second person can reply with the follow up or you can just say the whole thing, either way I love that, I just love the brutal honesty of it, like “God please make these dumb people smarter or just take them out because they are just useless and annoying.” 🤣 I swear if I knew of this saying when I was younger I would have been using it a lot. 😆

Ok Barb, here are some from Chile, my country. But please forgive me that I wouldn't be able to translate them to Slovenian...or English for that matter. So, you need to find a Slovenian person who speaks Spanish. Good luck! Here they are: Camarón que se duerme se lo lleva la corriente. En casa del herrero, cuchillo de palo. Cuando llueve sobre mojado. En boca cerrada no entran moscas. Más vale un pájaro en la mano que cien volando. El pescado muere por la boca. Lo que uno dice no se borra con el codo. Al mal tiempo buena cara. A lo hecho pecho. No hay mal que por bien no venga. No dejes para mañana lo que puedes hacer hoy. El que roba a un ladrón cien años de perdón. Quien a hierro mata a hierro muere. No le pidas peras al olmo. Donde manda capitán no manda marinero. And I have a lot more, but let's wait until you find a Spanish speaking Slovenian, or a Chilean who speaks Slovenian. Ah!..last but not least. I think that you are a very attractive lady, although I am sure that you have been told that one thousand times, So, no now is 1001 times. Waiting for your comments...

Another great video. Since I'm in Prague and trying (ever so sloooooowly) to learn Czech, I'm finding that I catch the meaning of lots of words and even recognize the words that are just the same, like Pivo. But, the one about the doorstep, I had to look up because I thought it was going to mean something like "You put your father in Prague, your son puts YOU in Prague" and I was wondering if that was meant as an insult. HEHEHE. If google translate is correct, then Prag means Prague AND doorstep or threshold in Slovenian.;-) Also, do ahoy and čau mean both "hello" and "bye" like they do in Czech?

Interesting books behind you. Learning weird thing ppl say should be part of any language learning. I don't like tea or coffee, i take some milk instead. If taking the fly literally, it is pretty much true. Ppl would try slapping fly faster when it is moving around them. The word is indeed not a horse, it is the bird. The blood not water 1 doesn't apply 2 mine fam. The Friday/Sunday 1, i would think more that after drinking much on Firday, you sleep a lot on Saturday and have the hangover on Sunday, hence the crying. The doorstep 1 sounds like karma. Still water aka water that doesn't move can get rotten and thus stink, at least ppl say that rotten things sting, i wouldn't know as i can't smell things. I think with looking at someone's else work, more in sense with don't pay 2 much attention what others think of you, pay more attention on what you think. BTW pot either means lesbo in Dutch. No idea how that came into existence like that though. The ten peg 1 is basically the Charlie Sheen method, XD. The donkey and ice 1 reminds me of donkey and the stone. The lie 1 reminds of the saying that lie can't run as fast/long as the truth can aka the truth will always catch up 2 the lie. Translating saying into a other language can be hard 2 do. Stay awesome and positive yourself, little Squirrelie🐿😆. The cute sound at the end was funny.

Zdravo Lepa! I hope you are having an amazing saturday and weekend thus far. 😊 Thanks for specifying on the "pot" reference, since you're in Cali (legal there). 🤣 And yeah, the one about the hangover, we always just say "hair of the dog" (no idea why?), but that's the American expression for starting to drink again when hungover. The one about the dress on the stake is very similar to our "beauty is only skin-deep" expression. Because someone can be beautiful on the outside, but ugly on the inside (heart). Luckily, I've seen your heart over all these years, and you're just as beautiful on the inside, as you are on the outside. 🌹☺🌹 Can't wait for the next "Therapy Sessions with Slovenian Expressions" segment. 😂👍🏼 Keep being absolutely amazing BarbiGirl! 😘🌹❤

Let's compare few of your sayings with the Slovak ones, although the meaning may differ: "Darovanému koňovi na zuby nepozeraj" (Don't check on teeth of horse you've got as a gift) - If you've got any gift, don't judge it and just take it as it is. "Krv nie je voda" (The blood is not a water) - the same as Slovenian. The other version with the same meaning is "Aká matka, taká Katka" (As mother, as Kate - daughter probably). "Kto sa smeje naposledy, ten sa smeje najlepšie" (Who laugh as a last one, he laughs the best) - Don't celebrate too early, someone may do things better later. "Tichá voda brehy myje" (Still water washes the banks) - The silent ones may be the most influential ones "Kto druhému jamu kope, sám do nej spadne" (Whoever is digging a hole for someone else, falls into it on his own) - If you want to do bad things to other, you're the one who will end up badly. "Klin sa klinom vybíja" (Tent peg is removed by a ten peg) - SAME! "Najprv si zamec pred vlastným prahom" (First sweep up your own doorstep) - SAME! "Lož má krátke nohy" (The lie has a short legs) - SAME, OMG! Let me add some more and quite typical Slovak sayings: "Keď mne umrela koza, susedovi musia dve!" (If my goat died, then two neighbour's goats must die, too!) - If something bad happened to me, then something worse must happen to someone else! "Ide s bubnom na zajace" (He's going to hunt rabbits with a drum) - He's very vocal with his plans and it might fail "Nehovor hop, kým nepreskočíš" (Don't say 'hop' until you jumped) - Don't celebrate too early "Dvakrát meraj, raz strihaj" (Measure twice, cut once) - Be careful before doing anything important "Nevstúpiš dvakrát do tej istej rieky" (You won't enter the same river twice) - You won't happened to be in the same situation twice "Vrana vrane oči nevykole" (A crow won't hurt other crow's eyes) - Two similar people won't hurt one another "Kto chce s vlkmi žiť, musí s nimi vyť" (Whoever want to live with wolfs, must howl with them) - If you want to belong to a certain group of people, you must follow their rules "Ráno múdrejšie večera" (The morning is wiser than evening) - Don't rush with your tasks/Take more time to think before you do something

"Blood is not water" and "Blood is Blood" have a pretty good parallel in english. " Blood is thicker than water" is a common saying in English meaning that you help your family move before you help strangers, like ex-girlfriends who are asking to use your brother's truck to move but your brother never liked your ex-girlfriend and frankly you don't like her anymore either.... ok Im not sure if that what it means but it seems like it should.
