Most of the issues you had with games were just because you were playing them on emulator. Anniversary is one of the best ports on the wii, if you had the original hardware you would know. It makes climbing less tedious because it lets you point at the ledges in a drawing pattern and she does all the work for you. Camera controls are easy because most of the 1st or 3rd person games on the wii relied on wiimote to rotate the camera. I understand your frustration but making a video like this and complaining about bad controls and telling people to avoid it "like a plague?" Isn't that pure definition of ignorance? just makes your point less valid. And i don't agree about 360 version of Anniversary being bad. PC version had the same reliance on bloom, it is the original intent. The PS3 HD version of Legend and Anniversary have better lighting but they have absolutely horrible shaders for rendering Lara's skin, she looks overblown in almost every cutscene. If you compared Xbox360 and PS3 versions (especially cutscenes) - you would know. Everybody should avoid those PS3 HD versions like a plague in my opinion. The general consensus is this - PC version is the best wherever you would play. But for ports - Legend - PS2 or Xbox360, For Anniversary - really any version is great (i personally played it on PSP back in the day), avoid PS3 because its lighting can be hit or miss (like shitty Skyrim mods), and Lara looks horrible. Underworld - PC or Xbox360 (or Wii, for interesting gimmicks). Xbox360 had an exclusive DLC for the Lara's Doppelgänger (and her ties with Natla), expanding the story a bit, but the Xbox360 store was shut down, unless you have it modded, its probably one of the most "complete" versions.

A small correction about Underworld; The PS2 version has full sections completely dumbed down to short cinematics, while in the Wii version you can play the entire game just fine. One of the examples is the gear puzzle at the start of 'Arctic Sea'. On the PS2 that whole section is turned into a short cutscene of Lara swimming to the entrance, while on the Wii version, you do the puzzle as you would do in the next gen consoles. To summarize, the ps2 version is the worst version.
@KasumiRINA9 күн бұрын
PC versions of original 5 games also have minor differences from PS1, most notably no level select but consistent saving system (TR1 gets rid of the crystals and saves like TR2, and TR3 gets "healing" green crystals). The Gold expansions were PC-exclusive. They also have wider graphics options like optional texture filtering. PC versions of 4 and Chronicles don't just differ from DreamCast, but PS1 too, so there's three different-looking games, on PC they have stuff like bump mapping and different lighting. AoD versions also differ but it's so broken I never played enough to compare.

@16:23 ranking based on visuals alone without playing the ports will only give you half the story. It assumes the person capturing it has good cables, hasn't compressed the video, etc. It also doesn't tell you how responsive the game is. Frame rate is easier to feel than see, and frame timings during gameplay is important to. 60fps with consistent frame pacing feels smoother than 60fps with inconsistent timings. Likewise, emulating the game makes it hard to draw comparisons. The idea of controlling Anniversary's camera with the Wiimote sounded horrendous, but when I actually tried it? Eh, I could see what they were going for. I still prefer a right analogue stick, but aiming and shooting with a Wiimote would be cool - if not completely outclassed by the game's lock-on system.
@thedanielefuly14 күн бұрын
I feel the urge to precise that PS2 and Wii version are not the same, and many people don't even know that. Wii version was basically released along with the Next-gen versions whereas PS2 version is literally a cut version of Wii one: to give an example, the Mediterranean Sea and Thailand levels in PS2 begin with Lara being already in the water. Altought the maps on Wii version are closer to the next-gen ones, they had to modify some puzzles to introduce the exclusive minigames and the game literally has rendered cinematics (PS2 has low quality pre-registered cutscenes). The gameplay of using poles to go ahead in the level was untouched. I do believe Wii version is an alternative experience that is enjoyable too but it's not as the same as the original version.

I absolutely LOVE Underworld. Is by far my favorite Tomb Raider game as it mixes the more mature and realistic Lara from, well, LAU trilogy with supernatural stuff that happened in the early games. I had the pleasure of playing it on PC and it's fantastic. Also, I bought a DS last year and got to play it (again) on original hardware and I loved it, too. Is a chunk sized game that you can play on a long bus ride, or whatever. The PS2 port though, which I could play as well, though emulated, is awful. I loved the experience, even though it was pretty bad, just because I wanted to see another phase of Underworld. There's one thing I gotta say: the Legend port for DS. I had to put it down as I died in an advanced section of the initial level and I was brought back to almost half the run and I had to do a lot of stuff again. Maybe it gets better after that first level, but I won't know for sure

dude there's no way you guys prefer the ps3 version of Legend and Anniversary over the X360 lol I played them on PC, PS2 and PSP, and I still wanted to have X360 graphics on PC so bad... Apart from the bloom, they truly look better (and the bloom is a problem common to both games on all platforms except for psp and, if you want, pc - limited on PS3, very bad on PS2 and X360, but still)
@emoHlliW200713 күн бұрын
Honestly for Legend it was borderline negligible, but for Anniversary I think the bloom issue comes of as being more prevalent due to the different visual design the game entails. I haven’t played the PC versions as I’m not able to run them properly, but the lighting looks to be marginally worse on both - more noticeable in Legend though.
@Speed4Runs13 күн бұрын
@emoHlliW2007 honestly Legend is a weird case, clearly the models and textures are subpar with respect to PC, but at least all 3 versions have next gen, whilst Anniversary is like a mix: the water looks so bad on PS3, its reflections are like a slideshow, while shadows in general seem to be the best - too bad for the self casted shadows that are so buggy. But the lighting is so bad, no matter what the contrast is, as it always looks soooo bright, like Lara's skin being completely white in some cases. X360 had a much better lighting than all versions imho, as well as the water, but the models are, also in this case, inferior than PC's (even at the lowest settings). Overall, the PC version is much clearer, but the bloom problem is still there, and it's due to the DOF setting combined with the post processing. Both can be disabled and it will look sooo clear, but unfortunately also many other effects will go away. Yes, it's an artistic style choice, because they could have limited the dof effects to underwater only, though that bloom was a popular thing going on at the time... Still, X360 had so many new gen effects - the water, for example, is very similar to the PS2's on PC at max settings, while on X360 it's a totally different story. I'm wondering why didn't they include all that in the PC. Finally, the PS3 had TERRIBLE framerate :/
@Legend131514 күн бұрын
Honestly I would say the worst versions of TR Legend (excluding mobile ports) are the ones that use that horrendous filter, like the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. The PC version calls it "Next Gen Content" and it can be turned off there, thank god. The game loses its vibrant colors and Lara's skin looks like it's made of wax. Overall, all visual consistency is thrown out of the window, it looks like an amateur threw a bunch of "next gen" graphics mods together and called it a day. I cannot understand how someone in the development team looked at that and thought it looked good.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is on Mac but it's not on steam. It's on the Mac App Store. Also the 360 port of Rise of the Tomb Raider was done by Nixxies, who Sony purchased a little while back to do their PC ports

I liked the video, but i was hoping you would go a little bit more in depth about the LAU ports. like for example how the PSP version of legend has a whole exclusive game mode called 'tomb trials' and a whole bunch of exclusive outfits. The atrocious underworld ps2 port has a few huge differences regarding gameplay that would have been hilarious if you would've mentioned that. Overall, a good video, but could definitely use more depth

I did play TR on NGage in a gaming fair in Finland. Oh boy those times. It was super expensive and the vertical screen was really odd. I didn't mind talking to it in a "wrong" way as no one in Finland speaks to each other in any case. Mobile was always for gaming. Nice that Americans and Koreans understood that years later. BTW a tough screen in a mobile phone was a thing in Finland also 2003. Quite many years before the iPhone also copied that feature.

I think you missed to mention that the PSP version of Legend had exclusive challenge levels and online multiplayer unlike all other versions of the game. I think that was a nice bonus with that port. The bad port of underworld for PS2/Wii also have unique sections of certain levels that doesnt exist in the main game. supposedly cut from the main game or added to replace sections that they botched because of hardware limitations. The Wii version of Anniversary also had exclusive motion control based puzzles added to the main game

I think I enjoyed Tomb Raider Legend More than Tomb Raider underworld on the DS. I felt that Legend had more variety in terms of different level types. Underworld was mostly a 2D platformer with a puzzle. I was pleasantly surprised when the DS version of Legend through in a few motorbike levels.

God I also remember getting the PS2 version of underworld for Christmas :( We did play it but it was such a weird, buggy experience. I feel bad for the developers, really, TRU at the time was VERY next-gen and porting it to something like the PS2 was such an insane, greedy ask. Buzz monkey did what they could.

Great video! I had the Ps2, Psp, Ps3, Pc and steam versions of Legend! I remember the PSP one being so laggy on the actual psp console!
@lionocyborg603014 күн бұрын
It’s more laggy now since my UMD drive needs adjustment but it wasn’t too bad back in the day. The problem was the controls due to a missing right thumbstick, which made hard difficulty impossible and if you have stick drift like I do now, it’s even more irritating.
@emoHlliW200713 күн бұрын
Never grew up with the PSP version, owned it on PS3 for the longest time through that HD classics rerelease thing, so maybe there was some personal bias...
@lionocyborg603013 күн бұрын
@ it was PC first for me but I first heard of it thanks to the OG Xbox version. Got a game mag for it and everything though I don’t know if I have the magazine itself anymore. I think I kept the sleeve though. PSP one is pretty fun despite its issues. TRA PSP has great outfits added in but it makes the boring corridors even longer. TRAE by Core Design is much better but it was never finished and the only leaked copy is an early version just begun being converted into an Indiana Jones game, not the later builds from some of the trailers & screenshots.
@JavaBum8 күн бұрын
From the very beginning you admitted that it came out on the Saturn first, then WHY in hell are you saying that they "changed" things FROM the Playstation version? It is the original, and the PS version is the port, same with the PC. This one shouldn't even be on here.

If they had been able to do tomb raider 2 on Saturn, they said they had a much better optimized engine for the Saturn port and we would have seen a Jurassicly better performance

Minus the Wiimote gimmicks, the Wii version of Underworld is basically what we’d get if the PS2 version was good. The PS2 one is just as bad as you and others say. I’ve not played my emulated Wii copy yet but I have gotten to Mexico on PS2 and seen a comparison list between the two ports which is how I know.

@emoHlliW200713 күн бұрын
It's really not that every Wii game out there is bad, but I just don't understand why some games force the motion control gimmicks or make you buy additional accessories/peripherals. There is zero reason for why you cannot use a GameCube controller to play Underworld.
@OwtDaftUK13 күн бұрын
The DC versions are not the best ways to play 4 and 5 imo as the controls are less than ideal.
@UnabridgedGamer13 күн бұрын
Okay, starting from the top: What you want far as mobile games is a J2ME Emulator. N-Gage can be emulated fairly easily with other Symbian emulators, there's a Discord server for that, it's pretty easy to find. BREW is the type of high end Java gaming that is much trickier to emulate - it wasn't until recently folks could get it working. BREW is needed for stuff like DMC Mobile and Bioshock 3D. No, the PC version of Legend is *not* the ideal way to play unless you have the GOG port. The normal Steam release has never been patched and has so many glitches and bugs it can be virtually unplayable, especially if you turn on the "next-gen" features. And, uh... yeah, some of us actually like using our Wiis? It's easier on our hands and allows for more organic movement. You can dislike movement controls fine but complaining about them like this isn't bringing anything new to the conversation. It's just wasting air time you could be spending talking about *how* they're implemented, like how Anniversary added additional motion-based puzzles. Additionally - the Wii has fewer buttons than any other controller. That's why most developers had to use motion controls of some kind. Nintendo only embraced a more typical control scheme around the time of the Wii-U. Also, were you playing Anniversary from the disc or digitally? Because I was playing my digital copy via Legend (TL;DR - you could originally get Anniversary as DLC for Legend, they run on the same tech), and I didn't have this bloom issue at all? "Why didn't they just cram the HD version down to the Wii?" That's... not how game development works. That's why. There are hardware limitations and Eidos are well documented for how notorious they were for crunching CORE and then Crystal Dynamics. Their obsession with annual releases was worse than Activision. The porting studio was working with a different version of a game that was heavily in flux - multiple characters and sections were cut from Underworld, as can be easily seen on the official Tomb Raider YT channel. There's some wild ideas, like bringing back Rutland's dad out for revenge, and a teen sidekick for Lara who would've been central to defeating Natla. It was not a good time. The Wii version specifically of Underworld also harnesses cut sections from the HD versions, one of which was later repurposed as DLC for the 360 version. This isn't to say I'm, down on the video: I appreciate the enthusiasm, I dig the topic you explored here, but you gotta brush up on your research and script editing. You call the Stadia version the weirdest one but then say "it's simply" within seconds later. The only "weird" thing about it is that it was streaming-based. That's not all that weird in a world where PS Now, XCloud, and Nvidia's streaming services all exist. And why are the ports presented chronologically? You could frame it as "least weird to the absolute weirdest" with a clearer arc for viewers to follow. There's also a variety of pacing issues where I'd start skipping ahead or speeding up the video because you got down a rabbit trail (again - the motion control gripes) rather than focusing on what makes these ports stand out. Some paragraphs could've been condensed down to a sentence, while other talking points could've been much more greatly expanded. I say all this, because you're just starting out, and it's key if you want to persist on this platform to develop good habits when it comes to self-editing. Learn to keep the negative points focused and narrowed so you don't lose your audience. Prioritize what's most exciting and try to transition organically between those points of interest. Be thorough in your research. The last thing you want is to have someone fact-checking you a day later in the comments section over things an hour on Google might inform you of. Also, maybe put a little more oomph into the delivery? You've got a good voice for this, but you sound disinterested at times. I find reading while talking to one friend specifically helps me a lot. If that's an option, do that. Best of luck!

Xbox version of legends runs at 60 fps. The X360 version looks better vs the PS3, and it even runs smoother. And is playable on the Xbox One and Series Consoles. PS3 version has massive frame rate issue's later on in the game, and the game can look quite blurry, and shadow's cast at a lower resolution. Yes, its true, it was released later on, but they didn't do a very good job with it. PC is easily the best version out there, and you can switch between old and next-gen graphics.

I strongly disagree with the TR1-3 Remasters being superior to their PlayStation releases. I'd pick PS1 any day. Semantic issues aside, it was a fun vid. For next time, I think having access to original hardware is a must when talking version differences.
@uros.u.novakovic14 күн бұрын
Did he even play anything on original hardware for this video? It feels like he booted every game on emulation for at least 2 minutes and that's all. There are so many differences between various ports of the game that he didn't mention simply because he only started them, played the intro level and quit. As for the Remasters, I personally consider them superior as well and am probably never going back to the original games now.
@ToyotaKudoFan14 күн бұрын
Why? The Remasters are easily better, the only reason you could think the PS1 versions are better would be nostalgia.
@emoHlliW200713 күн бұрын
I usually use the classic graphics on the remasters because I find them to be more vibrant, only thing I would say the remaster fails on is the save game bugs - I had so many crashes (playing on Xbox Series S). Such a shame they didn't seem to fix them in the final patch.
@KasumiRINA9 күн бұрын
@emoHlliW2007 remasters classic mode is kind of worse than the modern fan patches like Tomb1Main/TRX and before latest patches it had broken effects (i.e. TR2 water didn't shimmer). PC versions of TR1-5 also have tons of graphic options remasters miss. If people want unmodded originals, emulating PS1 PAL versions (except for 1 they all use 30FPS and correct aspect ratio) is good too. Saying as someone who plays the remasters a lot. Classic mode in them is not very good.

Sorry not sorry for me the best version of legend will always be the psp version, I still have the original box from back then 😂 plus I'm such a sucker for how psp graphics look overall Also I really don't like how Lara looks in the pc version, environments look wonderful but she looks like she added a ton of foundation and then forgot the rest of the makeup lol
@konradfun8 күн бұрын
I'd have to disagree with the PS3 version being the best. It has the most contrast and that's about it when it comes to Legends. The foliage is cut back compared to the 360 version and there are visual effects that aren't in the PC version as well. idk about that whole bloom thing in your footage for Anniversary cause it doesn't look like that for me or in other videos I've seen. I remember the PS3 version had it really bad and made Lara look like she's made of plastic though.
