This was timely. I decided to go back to Weirdwest last week and finish the first playthrough I started. It was a blast and I’m looking forward to the next phase, but I noticed there’s something no one has talked about. I love the map design in Weirdwest. The impression that you’re wandering around the topographical overlay of an actual map, complete with the curls, cracks and frayed edges you’d see on paper, always gives me a little smile as I rode away to the next town or mission. Hearing about the thought processes of anyone whose touched an immersive sim is always a highlight. Thanks for all the incredible docs Danny and crew!

I wish Raphael could've stayed at Arkane Austin and made this game there with a small team, just like how Josh Sawyer is doing at Obsidian, now that they're under Xbox, he can focus on small games like Pentiment. He would've had way more support that way, too bad no one knew about the deal at the time. It could've worked out better for both Raphael and Arkane.

I've had Weird West on my steam wishlist since before it released but for various reasons I wasn't drawn enough to buy it. I think it's time now to give it a go. EDIT 03/10/22: Just finished Weird West, bought it during the sale, got the soundtrack too just to support the devs. Was really really good had me addicted for 4 days straight. It's not perfect and is limited in depth in some areas but really scratches a certain itch. Love it!

Weird West didn't super click with me, unfortunately, though I've yet to uninstall it because I'm hoping to get back to it someday. Especially with all the recent patches. However, I really respect a lot of things the game does well and hope it is successful because I would love to check out a sequel or another game of its type from Wolf Eye. Great breakdown as always, hopefully goes some way to cutting through the noise and showing people how unique and interesting this game really is. It's on Game Pass so there really isn't a good reason not to check it out if you're a subscriber already.

On the topic of immersion, would you rather convey stats using relative terms like "Fast" or "A" in order to maintain suspension of disbelief, or truthfully tell the players the true stats of things at the cost of suspension of disbelief

honestly they should have an aiming system closer to resident evil 4, have the camera come down behind the character when they press the aim button so they can target things vertically as well as horizontally

I really enjoy WW it's been fun retuning after each patch and messing around. I'm excited to see where they take things next. I hope they stick around with WW for a while because it's got an amazing base. I want more side-quests, more dialogue options, customization and a sandbox mode. This game oozes so many amazing details and features, I just wish there was more. Same with the companions, this game flirts with the idea of something great, but never pushes it further, I hope they can make it more of what they want it to be. It's a real fun game that's for sure.

No talk about the stealth... Mmmm... OK. I'm glad they are aware of the combat and working on it. I've played a lot of twin stick shooters. But moving, aiming, and actually hitting things in Weird West is much harder than that. So I'm glad they are, or have addressed it.

I wonder what made them decide to not go with first person perspective, feels like it may have been Fallout influenced? Also interesting they didn't pick bit slower paced type of gameplay. I guess faster pace encourages more emergent gameplay.
@Nikelaos_Khristianos

Short answer: It's way more work and way more resources. Isometric games are generally less taxing than FP perspective games. It wasn't made by Arkane with Bethesda money backing it or Obsidian with Microsoft money. Despite Raph's pedigree as the founder of Arkane, WolfEye are an indie studio and there are unavoidable constraints like the budget and team size. Hence why Supergiant's games are all isometric, plus why all of Obsidian's games were also isometric when they were independent. Art-style is also a really big factor.

@@Nikelaos_Khristianos I wish he could had made this game at Arkane instead.
@Nikelaos_Khristianos
@Nikelaos_Khristianos 2 жыл бұрын
@@MaxIronsThird Oddly, I don't share that wish. He was done with AAA development, after 18 years of it I don't blame him. I think the early half of Arkane's life where it lost three big in-development projects, nearly having his company go under, and having to take on contract work, still really hurt him. Managing a large creative team and trying to run a company is pure stress! Despite the success of Dishonored, the cult following around Prey, those games had their fair share of hardships. And Deathloop sadly still proves just how savage AAA development can be. I think it's also worth mentioning that Raph himself is a creative dev, and for most of Arkane's life he wasn't being creative, he was being a boss. Prey was actually the first time where he really got to be a writer, not just a director. (For me, it really shows! That game is so systems driven it's astonishing. The player is completely responsible for creating the gameplay, it's fab.)

@@Nikelaos_Khristianos He could be like Josh Sawyer at Obsidian, MS would 100% have allowed him to make this type of game at Arkane.
@Nikelaos_Khristianos
@Nikelaos_Khristianos 2 жыл бұрын
@@MaxIronsThird It's not that simple though. Plus, I think you're really underestimating how difficult AAA development is and why Raph walked away from it in order to pursue more creative freedom. Plus, Obsidian and Arkane are not equal studios as far as capacity goes. Look at the trouble Avowed is in for perspective. Sure, MS would have been more open than other big publishers to allowing the Austin studio to make a smaller game, like Weird West, while the Lyon studio worked on another big title. BUT! That doesn't work with what Arkane does, disregard Raph as an individual for this. Arkane's two studios work independently, they only collabed for the original Dishonored. Aside from Arkane's own ethos, within Bethesda (the publisher), Arkane was one of the big names that MS was proud to get. They wouldn't have let them work on such a small project without a massive fight, regardless if there were two studios available. Quite aside from the fact that what Raph wanted to design didn't directly equal what everyone else at Arkane wanted to do. Part of being a creative director is listening to your team and understanding what kind of game your people want to make and then building your vision from there. Raph, and Harvey Smith for that matter, weren't all of Arkane by themselves, just like the fact that Josh Sawyer isn't all of Obsidian by himself.
