As an Australian student currently in year 12, I have never heard of this red pen ban, all my teachers mark with red pen and I also have never seen anybody be upset about the colour of the pen. One of the schools near me was considering placing a rule that you were not allowed to bring your phone to school, or else it would be given to the office. The more you broke the rule the longer the office would have it (sometimes including overnight) until smth happened (don’t remember what). If I remember correctly, I think they were talking about checking random students bags every morning to check if they brought their phone with them, and obviously people were upset about it. I think part of the rule got implemented and apparently students GPA’s improved so my school almost did it. We made a big fuss and argued and argued over things like needing to call parents or in certain emergency or health cases (blood sugar, medication, personal issues, appointment updates, etc.)., mentally disabled and neurodivergent students needing phones to communicate or deal with meltdowns, etc. We also kept telling the office staff that they’d be the ones dealing with the upset parents and time wasting calls, and they decided it wasn’t worth dealing with parents. I understand why schools would want to push for this (bc phones are addicting and distracting), but surely there’s better ways than fully banning them? Maybe having to put your phone in a bin or wall pocket thing for class, and if you needed it you’d tell the teacher? A rule for teachers that you’re not allowed to deny medical uses and updates?

Not even to mention that some schools have thousands of students. You want to deal with that many students if multiple of them need to make a call? And some situations don’t need a call, it could just be a short and simple text message. It would be more of a waste of time to make them go to the office and call than it would be to just tell your teacher you need to text your parent. There are plenty of reasons why taking phones away or not letting them bring them at all is not a good idea.

My high school I went to. (In the UK). The headteacher banned hugging (even when kids were upset/just a normal greeting for most kids). It was a massive talking point, it was even in the news. I gave a friend a hug who was crying and was told to stop. It was so dumb. He tried to ban the word Christmas and also had a red line going around the school yard. You had to ask to go to the bathroom.

I get the asking to go to the bathroom thing- we had the same rule, where it was one at a time, unless you had a special pass, as people were using it to bunk and it was becoming a problem with fire alarms. I'm glad it was dropped at college/ uni though as we had longer lessons (my longest was three hours), especially since a lot of people had their periods by then, and it's unreasonable to ask someone to wait two hours if their pad is leaking or they could get TSS.

Former primary school teacher here! I can attest to the red pen ban! Wasn’t allowed to mark books with red at all. It was green pen only and it was “2 Stars and a Wish” feedback comments - 2 good things and 1 thing to improve. Had to be careful how to phrase feedback as it wasn’t allowed to come off negative. The children would use “purple pen of power” to go the improvements the next lesson. Honestly baffled me that red pen was so problematic. Never heard the beat friends rule though! I can’t see that working well!!

Yep, training teacher assistant here and we have the same "2 stars and a wish" rule as well. We also have "what went well" and "how to improve/ reflection" for the older students. The ink rule is a bit of a pain- registers and most documents have to be done in black ink, grading in green, whiteboards in black (as it's the easiest to read, especially at the back) and the students mark each other in the bic purple pens. The one exception we had was each student also had a designated gel pen (from a big pack of around thirty you'd get in the works for a pound) to keep in their trays They were assigned randomly and changed every month or so as otherwise there were fights over the brighter colours, and one poor soul would be stuck with yellow, which never showed up. It was later swapped out with a gold pen, which quickly became the favourite.
