Imagine the fruit garden you could start with all the seeds from the fruit you're trying. I'd buy seeds from you! If that isn't already a thing, it should be. Happy travels. Thanks for another great video!

I occasionally share seeds as a patreon perk , but I'm too busy with fruit hunting and performing to get into the seed biz.

0:50 It looks like something they would eat in "The Lord of the Rings" because Barbara Remington's cover art for the first Ballantine paperback edition of the trilogy features a tree bearing fruit that looks a lot like engkala...or pink eggplant. I always loved that painting! =)

I can devour a big bowl of engkalak. It goes well with salt and chilli or adding some soy sauce. Taste a bit like avocado or buttermilk.

Oh wow, i live there! First few seconds into this video i was like "wait i recognise these places" and i confirm! It is my hometown. To me, engkala fruit tastes more like a sweeter avocado ngl. It doesnt really have a sourcream taste. It has seasons so we dont always find these. We have weirder fruits apart from these engkala fruits, cant really name all of em rn but they are totally rare. We have the dabai, which looks like an olive but black on the outside but yellow on the inside. Idk if it tastes like an olive cuz i havent eaten any olives before. But if you wanna try em out you can come back to Sarawak! Just like some other fruits, the dabai fruit has its own seasons. Usually produce fruits during durian seasons By the way engkala is pronounce as ungkalla

In Brunei, we call it 'Pengalaban'. It tastes like avocado. My late father once grew it beside the house. We boiled the ripe pink fruit and ate it with a little salt.

Hi Jared, we met in Innisfail in March. This is the first of your videos I've watched, because I've just harvested a bucketful of engkalas. I liked your idea of vegan dairy product parallel. Best wishes. PS since the trees are tall,I cut the tree down to access the fruit.

Your description of the fruit tastes is spot on. We normally eat it with rice.

I have been waiting for this review since last time you tried the Dabai because this one looked pretty. If soaking doesn't make any difference I would pefer pink. But whenever you say "It's not a bad taste" in high pitch I am not sure if I want to eat one. LOL

Ate this just now. Forgot completely about this video and expected it to taste like a garcinia would have. Oh how surprised I was when this tastes nothing like it. the white flesh tastes like a young coconut flesh with slight bit of avocado taste toned down tenfold. That by itself is not that weird. the weird thing is more of the aftertaste. It's unpleasant. Indonesian calls this "langu". It's like the aftertaste of a raw carrot, but stronger. I've eaten a lot of strange tropical fruit, but this one is just plain weird.

@theoddfellas7 жыл бұрын
The way to prepare this fruit is by soaking it in hot/warm water until it becomes soft. Dont soak it too long. Dont boil it either or you'll ruin the fruit. Some people enjoy eating it with a bit of salt. Pls do remember that when it comes to South East Asian fruits particularly from Borneo, dont try to compare it with the likes of Apple, Orange, Grapes, Pears, Strawberry, Watermelon etc. If you do that, chances are you'll never going to appreciate the unique taste of SEA fruits. Most of the current local generations(born from 90's onwards) didnt eat this kind of fruits (Engkalak, Dabai, Embang, Lakum etc) anymore. They're used to fruits from the west and their taste buds already ruined by refined sugar.
