You should try out the giant banana. It's usually not used for raw eating since there are better tasting varieties and eating the giant banana would be a waste. People usually use the giant bananas for baking and making pisang goreng (fried banana and also banana chips). They do grow these in Malaysia, should be common in South East Asia. Edit: "giant banana" is a generic term used to refer to a type of banana that is about half as long as your arm and about as wide. I have no idea what the name is.

Interesting. My only question about these "banana taste test" (which I am binge watch now ) is how much is it about the specimen, subtype of the banana? Because we in the West always eat Cavendish banana, yet they are vastly different from each other. Some are waxy some are fluffy, some are tasteful, some are just a pale taste with some texture. And its not just the level of ripeness. Sometimes I go back to the same grocery to buy from the same batch, because all of those tastes better than some other grocery ones.

I'll think you missed out some of the other bananas variants available in Malaysia PISANG BERANGAN - done PISANG KELING - done PISANG NIPAH / ABU - not sure PISANG TANDUK (PLAINTAIN) - done PISANG EMBUN - not sure PISANG KAPAS - not sure PISANG RAJA - not sure PISANG MONTEL - done PISANG EMAS - done PISANG AWAK - not yet (this banana got black seed inside) PISANG LEMAK MANIS - note sure PISANG MERAH - not yet ( is it a red banana) PISANG NANGKA - not yet PISANG RASTALI - not sure I'm not sure from the taste description that you have mentioned. mostly bananas variant are planted in Johor state, some is unique to other state in Perak and Melaka and Borneo. Hope on your next visit you could taste the other variants also.

The first is Pisang Emas (Golden Banana). The second one is Pisang Berangan (Daydreaming Banana). Third one Pisang Montel (Cute, Petite and Plumpy Banana). Pisang Montel is a modern variety.

Hi Jared! Love your video! I'm from Malaysia and I grew up loving and eating so many types of bananas. Fyi, banana is so deeply ingrained in Malay culture, we use banana in so many Malay proverbs and poems. My favourite variety is a cooking banana called "Pisang Nangka" which literally means "banana jackfruit" however it is not related at all to jack fruit, lol. It has a very balanced taste of sweetness and sourness. The sourness is what makes it flavourful. Honestly, I have not tried eating it raw before and I don't think it would taste as good as when it is cooked, but if you can get a ripe and good quality Pisang Nangka, give it a try.

Having now watched both of your banana videos to date, I have to ask if you have tried apple bananas (I guess also called 'silk' and 'latundan' bananas.) I had them a number of years ago in Hawaii and have wanted them to make the journey to the mainland ever since. Best banana I have ever had.

I believe I actually picked these up in Chinatown in NYC. Catch was that they had seeds! between all the spitting, the flavor was incredible, a nice sourness and sweetness and a firm wet texture.

+Jared Rydelek I don't recall the ones in Hawaii having seeds, but a little research made it look like the "Apple" part of the name is more marketing than actually the name of the cultivar. Apparently, what is sold as apple bananas is one of a couple varieties, one of which is the Brazilian, which you did try.

Some people eat the skin. I tried it once to blend it which turned black but tasted like banana but when eating it as is its has a odd taste and texture. Strange how the taste changed with blending. Also a lot of fruits the skin and seeds are edible which you have not tried which has more nutrients but I assume not as nice. Also even trying one type of banana can have various taste depending on how ripe they are and where they are grown. But on average you give us a rough estimate of the taste which is good. Also you should present a spreadsheets of the various fruits eaten with link to the video and where to get them. Also try to save some seeds and try to grow some since who knows how long those fruits will lat where they are since when civilization changes the fruits get taken down. Also so many diseases can destroy the trees. And many that are good have been cut down. Even if it means 1% of the fruit you have tried is no more it is worth saving the seeds.

Hey trench. I do try the seeds of fruit when they are commonly eaten and I have the means to prepare them. Spanish Lime seeds, jackfruit seeds and Rambutan seeds are some of my favorites. Yeah for sure. You can only get an idea from a fruit. There is so much variety from tree to tree, but yeah I just do what i can to give a general idea based on the sample I have. Working on getting a website up with a complete list of fruit by colloquial and scientific name. Hopefully will get that up soon.

We have the same kinds of Bananas in India as well (and then some), especially the Southern part of India, with different names. I suppose these are typical of that region of the globe. Being a 5th generation farmer, I can tell you, there are at least 8 different types of Bananas we have in our farm alone, some of which you have mentioned in your video. I am curious how you finance your lengthy trips overseas. I mean do you have sponsors? Or is it your hobby that you follow religiously? Thanks again for another great video.

I have tried Dole banana when I was in Australia a few years ago, I think that's cavendish banana and the taste is just so bland, airy creamy but rather bland compared to the bananas I eat in Malaysia. The bananas taste in Malaysia is also dependent on the farmer who sells them, some wait until the banana is ripe from the tree and some just couldn't care and harvest it early. it makes a huge difference in taste factor so the same banana variety will taste different across different stores.

It would appear that bananas are to Malaysia what apples are to the US, what with all the different varietals it sounds like you had to choose from. Apparently Pisang Keling are also a varietal of the Latundan or "Apple" banana. I recognize that white flesh anywhere!
