It bothers me how people only ever seem to tell half the story when it comes to Ireland designating Subway's bread as not-bread. It has nothing to do with nutrition or even food-identification, really. It was just a tax law (which I thought was archaic, but have since been corrected) that classifies foods with a certain proportion of sugar as luxury goods, rather than necessities, and therefore taxes them at a higher rate. There are a bunch of foods we would commonly consider bread that Ireland's tax law would do the same thing to.

Good to show we shouldn't believe everything these types of channels say. They've probably got people churning these lists who love to quote buzzfeed lol. I'm guessing they outsource a lot (or probably all) of the writing. There's no way they have enough time for the proofreaders to do a thorough job. The editors probably have their plates full as well. The presenters sure don't have another time either. These videos are the fast food of entertainment lol I appreciate your explanation! It's the 1972 Value Added Tax Act which is annually amended, hardly archaic. It's also an important law because it distinguishes between essential and non-essential foods. Bread in Ireland is very cheap compared to the United States. The US is very expensive for groceries. An 800g slice bread is a $1.41 in Ireland .

I really can’t blame Mexico and other countries banning sugary cereals from marking to kids. It’s an easy way for the food industry to get kids hooked on sugar from the get go, both as little kids and also the first thing they eat. Sugar is in everything, breads, cookies, candy, sodas, juices, snacks, it’s so easy to become obese on American food. There’s a reason a lot of other countries don’t have America’s obesity problem, or that countries start becoming obese when they allow US food companies to do business without having to cut down on the sugar content

Growing up here in Mx, untill this law was passed, you could see tons of adds calling for children to consume such craps to the point that many adults who grew up with these cereals still consume them on a daily basis. Luckyly theive changed this and now products come with some ugly looking black signals that indicate the excess of calories, sodium, sugar or fats

A similar discussion happened in the Netherlands too some years ago but was regarding gluten free breads. It was found that many contained sommuch sugar that they should be considered cake instead of bread 🤷‍♀️

yeah, food deserts are a huge problem nowadays. a lot of poor urban areas are flooded with fast foods, snacks, sodas, etc while being unable to access fresh foods and clean water for MANY miles (hence "food desert"). it's what's causing obesity in a lot of areas around Mexico and the US. we just have a lot of poor people and poor areas.

So agree! As someone with food allergies, I so appreciate the way foods are more clearly labeled as well in all the European countries I have visited. I have recently developed an intolerance to the hormones used in most animals products on top of a gluten & dairy issue. Honestly, it sounds kinda silly but I’m considering this in a decision to move or not.

I know many may mock Australia's strict rules and fines but as stated even the smallest import can effect a whole nation. As a place that had been isolated from the rest of the globe for millennia the flora and fauna are very susceptible to disease from outside.

Same in the US: Black Currant (and other Currant beeries) are banned in the US. Why? - Because even the seed can contain a fungus that is deathly for the American Birch tree (I think it was the Birch tree). The Eurasian Birch developed resistance against the fungus but not the American cousin.

The bans were lifted in most states by 2003. Disease resistant varieties have been developed but Americans just don't like currants so they're not widely grown.

Funny thing, back in the 70’s, when there was a concern over artificial sweeteners and cancer; the US and Canada knew they had to choose between two common agents, banning one and allowing the other. They recognized the need for a sugar replacement. So the US banned cyclamates and allowed saccharine. Using similar laboratory findings, Canada banned saccharine and allowed cyclamates.

Interesting are the statistics. Yes a few children died by choking on the (I found a source that claims "An estimated 10 children have died choking on Kinder Surprise toys in the nearly five decades the eggs have been sold." But in the most cases they did choke on the toy hours, days after they eat the chocolate egg, when playing with the little "smurf" (or whatever they choked). Even when the toy would be next and seperated to the chocolate egg - these children would have choked it.

As an Australian, there is nothing more annoying than buying an expensive bottle of drink or whatever, and having it taken away when you get to customs, only having to buy the exact same thing a few steps away again. I understand why, but it just means you scoff your food/drink before you get to customs.

When I travelled to the USA twice, I got around it by carrying a refillable filtered water bottle. I avoided paying for drinks, I could tip out the water before boarding and refill when I got to my destination. At LAX, I noticed an Asian traveller doing exactly the same thing.

@@Lawrence_Talbot when I worked in Publix and Kroger's bakery, we would donate the out of date bakery items to food banks. I seem to remember that some companies/stores don't do it because if anyone gets sick, they could be legally responsible for the person getting sick (that may have to do with people getting food out of trash cans). My memory is fuzzy on that. You're thinking about food banks. They do that, but depending on the amount of donations, it may not be enough. Also homeless people don't always have a safe way to store perishables (or food in general).
