The difference in the frozen ones is, instead of being cooked onions, patty, top bun and then placed on the bottom bun, they're cooked onions, patty, bottom bun and then flipped and the machine puts the top bun on before it goes on a short cooling journey on it's way to being wrapped. My dad used to take his dates out to a White Castle in the Bronx back in the late 1940's. My late husband and I bought sacks of burgers from a White Castle near his home in Long Island. We agreed there's nothing like a White Castle experience. The burgers are soft and "cuddly" in texture, but the aroma is wonderful, and they're so satisfying. Now I live in rural Vermont where there are no White Castle restaurants. So glad the local supermarket sells the frozen slyders and I have a microwave oven! I make sure to supply the sliced pickles when I serve them.

As a New Yorker who lives by several White Castles, I have to say their breakfast menu is very underrated. Of all the fast food joints, White Castle is the only one that fries up a real egg with real melted cheese on their breakfast sandwich. It's almost on par with going to a deli for a breakfast sandwich. Also, the option to get a side of cheese sauce to dip the sliders and fries into is awesome. One fun fact is the place is 'white' and the employees wear white because it was to show the customers how sanitary the store and cooking are.

Would have been nice to see how much the Harold and Kumar movie increased their sales over time. Guess I'll google it and write it here in an edit. Forbes magazine stated that White Castle produced a double-digit rise in sales in the months after the film's release. I imagine in the years since it would become increasingly difficult to quantify but I'd wager that a fair amount of tourists would not have passed up an opportunity to visit one. I know I would go and it would be specifically related to that movie. It could possible be up there with one of the most successful advertisements for a company and still have influence today and in the years moving forward.

But why does the ad for the impossible slider show cheese if it's supposed to be vegan friendly ? Does that mean that they're keeping boxes of vegan cheese in stock at every White Castle that offers the impossible slider and are they steamed on separate grills then the beef patties. To prevent cross-contamination adapting to a vegetarian diet is much easier then adapting to a vegan diet. I find it hard to believe most of these corporations are willing to go to the necessary lengths to properly adapt to vegan requirements. I don't think it would be cost-effective enough for them. I hope this doesn't sound like a nitpick, because I actually love the video! But there was at least one White Castle in Wyandotte County Kansas in the early 90s. I know because it was my favorite fast food place as a young child! It was located on 7th Street in the neighborhood of Armourdale in Kansas City, Kansas! It closed down sometime around '95 or '96 if I recall correctly (it's now a Subway last I checked). It's a small thing to overlook because as far as I know, it was literally the only one in the Kansas City metro area on either side of the state line! I sure wish they'd bring them back around the KC area.

So funny story: my Sister is a vegetarian, not because she believes eating animals is unethical or whatever but just because she hates the taste of meat. Except for White Castles. Because they don't taste like meat. So as a kid I ate a LOT of White Castle. When you said "Vegetarians love White Castle" I was seriously wondering if my Sister wasn't alone!

Great video, Weird History! Speaking of restaurants, could you do episodes on Jack In The Box, Burger Chef [who Mcdonald's stole the Happy Meal from], and Howard Johnson's? These three chains have interesting histories, but only Jack In The Box is still around.

I grew up eating White Castle burgers. My dad was in the White Castle drive-through grabbing snacks for our family when my younger brother was born. I have a lifetime of love for this company, but felt betrayed when they called for increased censorship on social media. But companies are companies, so I shouldn't be surprised to learn that White Castle uses Genetically-Modified-Foods in their products to cut costs.

That comment about Kansas not having a white castle in 85 years is 100% untrue. I moved to Eastern Kansas in the early 90s and I remember eating at a white castle when we moved to the area. It was gone by the late 90s but we definitely had them into the 90s

Same… there was a White Castle in Shawnee, KS in the early 90’s. I moved away, so I don’t know when it closed down, but it was alive and well through the 1980s.

My wife wanted to go to the USA for our honeymoon. I didn't. I agreed only because she promised to go to white castle at least once during our stay. We ended up having slyders three days in a row in Harlem. That was on my top 3 experiences in NYC, with the Empire State building early in the morning and the helicopter tour of Manhattan

Having grown up in St Louis, we often stopped by the original StL location on Chippewa at Hampton, now a Target. It was one of the to go only locations which sat on top of the areas commissary. What was funny was that my dad as a teen ate at the same one back in the 1930's
