I’m sure any hikers or bicyclists in the tunnel will de-ass the area with the quickness if they see that kind of locomotive coming up on the tunnel! Forget being able to see, just BREATHING is a challenge with all that smoke and steam! But man, the way the steam lingers at the top of the tunnel is absolutely amazing-it’s completely beautiful and a little eerie at the same time! Great catch, my friend!

Music to my ears. And I don't like loud sounds but trains are different with me because I don't know if I ever told you, the house I grew up in was a train station annex and we were real close to the tracks so it was a part of my life growing up. Tomorrow we are going to the Western Maryland scenic railroad and we are taking the train that has open air cars! I'm really hoping the weather holds out, I wish it wasn't going to be cloudy and I'm praying it will be different! My friend is a videographer and wants to film from the train. I've never done this, it should be exciting. Great video of the train coming out of the tunnel!! I moved to West Virginia so Cumberland is much closer now. 😁 That's so crazy how the steam just is still hanging there and then it takes a long time to dissipate because it's caught in the tunnel, which is something I have never seen before. And that's only because I've seen diesel trains. Fantastic!

I think you will be using a diesel train tomorrow. I dont think the steam engine will be used for another month or so. Either way, have a great time! The diesel engine also puts some smoke in the tunnel, haha, but not as much as the steam. 🚂

@@BaltimoreAndOhioRR yeah I didn't think we'd be so lucky to get an actual steam engine, I knew it would probably be diesel. I just hope I don't choke on the smoke LOL. When I was a kid of about 12 years old we had the Penn Central going past our house and like I said it was really close everything in the house would start shaking and the dishes would rattle, but they were nice when they would come by in the middle of the night and they would be quiet. I hopped on a flatbed to get a ride home once. That was dangerous but I knew I could do it cuz the train was going exceedingly slow! When we were kids we would run out there when the train would come because the engineers would toss candy out to us and sometimes they would throw candy from the caboose also. Hope I'm not repeating myself and maybe have told you this story before. So you can see how trains are special to me.

I almost went to that tunnel to film that train. My plans were to film it coming through just like you did but I spent too much time in Georgia. That was awesome! Was there anyone there to tell people to stay out of the tunnel when the train was coming?

No, there was no one "of authority" there. I was the only person there for a while until shortly before the train came, a couple of other railfans walked out to me, and then the Trains Magazine photographer drove up in a vehicle. We were the only ones around at this spot. I plan on going back in the spring 😉

That is a big steam engine! The only one I can thing of that is larger is the UP Big Boy. Very cool to see a steam engine much less one that smokes up a tunnel! A nice science lesson as well - hot air rises demonstrated in the tunnel.
