As always, many thanks for sharing your veggie tour of China. China is obviously a vast and diverse country. The people in Hainan also look rather different compared to those on the mainland. North East South West, the food and sceneries and etc. are so different. China is such an interesting and exciting place to visit, modern, high tech, clean and green, beautiful, safe and friendly/ For Veggies, Vegans, Vegetarians, China is a delicious place with a wide range of yummy cuisines that you are spoilt for choice. The so-called plant based food has been in existence in China for thousands of years already. The best "fish" that I have ever had is a vegetarian dish in Hangzhou. The temple food in China is basically vegetarian. Hainanese food is known to be delicious and varied and can be found all over South East Asia, and it is of course famous for not only the chicken rice but also many other yummy dishes like pork chop, congee, even coffee, Westernized Chinese dishes, etc. The restaurant that you visited does not need you to use QR code which many foreigners dread but surprisingly, you seem to prefer the menus with QR codes but anyway, most of the restaurants, if not, all, other than a handful do no use QR codes. I love to visit China. I come here and write to support you. You are a very nice couple. Enjoy yourselves. 😄😃😀

Wishing you a pleasant journey in China. China has always been doing things and rarely promotes it to the world, so many people in other countries know nothing about China. I hope more foreign friends will come to China for tourism. China is very safe and cheap, especially Chinese food, which can satisfy foreigners' taste buds and enjoy beautiful food. At the same time, the transportation is convenient. There are many ancient cities with thousands of years of history, many beautiful scenery, many many. Looking forward to more foreign friends having the opportunity to come and visit China.

Not just Haikou, there are hundreds of cities in China with beautiful night views of lights.
Generally Chinese dessert are not very sweet when compared to most other countries around the world but of course there are a few exception due to Chinese cuisine diversity. And it is save to generalize that Chinese taste pallets prefer savory food rather than sweet.

Indeed, there is such a custom in China: it is difficult for us to recommend food to others, especially strangers, because everyone has different taste preferences and dislikes. If we recommend something based on our own habits and the other person doesn't like it, it can be awkward for both parties. Chinese cuisine boasts an enormous variety of dishes. Even as Chinese people, we cannot recognize all the ingredients. Moreover, many ingredients are highly regional, loved by locals but completely unacceptable to outsiders, such as houttuynia cordata, also known as fishwort or chysanthemum heart. If we want someone to recommend food to us, we tend to list out all the things we dislike, because the narrower the range, the easier it is for them to make a recommendation. What you ate was kelp cut into strips. It's considered a relatively common vegetable. Kelp is rich in iodine, which is beneficial to health. The white rolls that Julia is eating are also unfamiliar to me.The white cubes you ate should be taro. They are made from steamed and powdered taro. What I find humorous is that there are many people online who have never been to China, claiming that the beautiful cities of China they see on social media are only what the CCP wants them to see, and that except for a few major cities, China is very poor. Your travel experiences effectively refute such meaningless statements.
