IMO the best part of Greyhawk is that it's a great smorgasbord campaign. You can ignore 90%+ of it, find a starting location with a real-world theme to it (Mongol-tribesmen, Viking raiders, middle-eastern Caliphate, ocean/pirate islands, Aztec jungle, Swedish mercenaries, Italian merchant guilds, collapsed empire, etc.), terrains (deep elven forest, dwarven mountain kingdoms, reptile swamp, desert, etc.) and there is a corresponding Greyhawk area you can set it in. Players and DMs can start small in one of these areas -- read only the background on a single country and a few geographical areas and races -- and you're good to go. This makes it easy to start as you can run a full campaign in 5-10 hexes (100 or so miles) without affection/knowing about the rest of the world. Likewise, it means even after 40 years of playing... you still have different types/styles of campaigns you can play in and they are still new.

I love the sense of history involved in Greyhawk. Plus you can actually meet the players from the original campaign still. It still has enough open, sandbox setup that a DM can make it his own.

That map is a masterpiece Grognard. Love the new video. I lost my Darlene map. Can’t get enough of this stuff. Once I freaking left two huge maps I had of towns I created. They were about the same size. Taped together sheets with 10 ft. squares.

Hands down the best campaign setting ever printed. I have many fond memories of leading hundreds of different players over those maps since the 1980s. I'm glad it's being kept alive, thanks for folks like you. Thanks!

Greyhawk is HOME. My current Castles & Crusades campaign is set in the same version I played in (AD&D back then), just 30-40 years later. My players will likely run into our old PCs-turned NPCs sometime. This is a great intro video!

5:13 Iuz is one of major protagonists? I think you meant antagonists? I mean, sure, there are moments Iuz fights evil (in Vecna Lives! and Die, Vecna Die!, for example), but he's very much a chaotic antagonist even while doing that.

One thing I like about "Greyhawk" over other settings is that it doesn't feel quite as "settled," despite many of the nations being centuries old; as a result I feel like there's always something new to discover - kind of like post-Roman Europe as it fragmented into a number of kingdoms, while also taking note of the various ancient sites of precursor civilizations. (It also helps that my favorite character, Quintessa - originally created in the game _SoulCalibur III_ - fits so perfectly as the stereotypical pureblooded, noble-born Suloise sorceress, inspiring me to both read more about the setting _and_ to craft unique spells baring her name.)

This was quite good, extremely eloquent, and very welcome. Though really, you had me at kitchen sink. Whether it be gaming or movies, kitchen sink stuff is most often my favorite. As to the pronunciation of "drow," I was always one for the version rhyming with "show." But I must say, in recent years, I've become a drow rhyming with "sow" guy.

Is the Greyhawk Folio a must if I'm buying the World of Greyhawk Box set (1st edition)?. Can a DM new to Greyhawk get by on the Greyhawk Adventures hardcover?

I found a web page that listed this out but seem to have lost it. A great video idea would be to point out on the map where some of the "classic" modules took place -- Keep on the Borderlands, Against the Giants, the Slave Lords Series, the Saltmarsh series, etc.

I've been thinking of running an RC Greyhawk campaign for a while now. I know its more famous as a setting for AD&D, but could you do a video about the merits of running Classic D&D games in Greyhawk? The RC has beholders, assassins and monks and the (Wrath of the) Immortals box set demons and such… it seems like you'd have everything you'd need to get the right Greyhawk feel.

I've got a "Beyond the Flanaess" playlist here, and completely done treatments of Baklunish Basin and Zihindia with maps, descriptions, etc. I did full maps of the rest of the continent, but am re-doing them as I continue my series of blog articles. Honestly, Gary did next to nothing with the rest of the world, so there's ample space to fill in a lot of details.

Can you recommend which videos of yours to start if I’m looking to run greyhawk for the first time that will fill me in on the best timeframe? I’m running 3.5e core only. I’d like for a classic, gritty, emergent style campaign rather than grandiose stories like modern play. I know you don’t care for the living greyhawk gazetteer (though I didn’t see your video explaining in detail why?) so I’m curious if I would be better served to convert the original or gold box stuff?
