Many A True Nerd

Күн бұрын

Democracy Week returns to Many A True Nerd, meaning that you once again get the chance to choose our next full series, and I suspect this contest is going to be particularly close...
The votes will all happen on the channel's community tab - www.youtube.co...
The first vote will be starting at 8pm UK-time on Tuesday (that's 22 hours after this video goes live).
Whichever game gets the least votes in the poll over the following 24 hours will be eliminated, and a fresh poll will go live the day after with the remaining candidates.
This will continue until either a 2-game run-off at the end of the week, or a game gets over 50% of the total vote, as an absolute majority cannot be beaten, even if all the other votes backed any other game.

I should also stress - while the winner gets an automatic series within weeks, other high ranking games could well get future series too, just as XCOM 2 did after the last Democracy Week, even though it didn't win. Basically, it is very worthwhile advocating for your favourite game even if you're not sure it can win, as the 2nd and 3rd place games could be well very placed for a series in future, especially as there's only one contest this year...

Morrowind would be a fascinating series. It`s main appeal would be somewhat similar to that of Oblivion - seeing Jon play in the typical sandbox of a of a Bethesda game, but in a world he is completely unfamiliar with and experiences for the very first time. While the game is pretty old at this ponint, the world itself more than holds up. There is a reason this game saved Bethesda and lay the foundation for everything that has come since. This series would also provide an interesting perspective on the design of Bethesda games. Morrowind was the first game of it`s kind for Bethesda and given that Jon has played literally every other Bethesda game since, it could give him the opportunity to make some interesting observations and comaprisons. Last but not least - the story. People often shit on Bethesda writing as if their games could have many great aspects, but the story is never one of them. I find Morrowind the forgotten counter argument to this belief as it`s main quest is one of my favourites in all of gaming. I genuinely think it`s a mastepiece and seeing Jon experience it for the first time would be absolute joy.

Morrowind is the game we all point to to say "this is what we could have had." Sure, the game isn't balanced and there's a lot of ways to break it, but it allows you to actually play your way in a cool world with good and consistent writing and world-building. Every game since has dumbed every aspect of this down. Sure, they've sold more copies, but how much of that is due to marketing and how much is actually because of the direction they took the games? (I'm pretty sure basically all the writers for Morrowind and before are gone now though, so that's part of the issue. The current writing doesn't seem to consider the consequences of events particularly carefully most of the time now, and this is especially obvious in Starfield.)

I genuinely cannot think of a single creator on KZbin I want to watch playing BG3, more than Many A True Nerd. I think the utter freedom the game allows for works wonderfully well with Jon's love of trying to do basically whatever he wants. In most games, doing wacky, creative stuff shows the boundaries of the game, but in BG3, you can just do almost anything you want. It's going to be hilarious to watch, fun to play, and I just want to see which companions end up getting used.

Honestly, the depth and complexity of Morrowind's various systems is so perfect for Jon. The game gets so wild, and pairing that with Jon's chaotic madness? It'd be a match made in heaven. And that's not even getting the fact that there are NO essential NPCs... Or the fact that you can go around stealing everyone's pillows to literally build pillow forts anywhere in the world.

It has to be Shogun 2. It HAS to be. Jon’s Rome and ME2 series are two of his most classic series that I have rewatched multiple times, historical Total War (besides Fallout!) is where this channel shines and while I would genuinely love to watch him play BG3 and Witcher 3 a Shogun series will be a new classic MATN series. I literally had a start when he said Shogun was an option. An amazing fucking game. Side note: this list is tearing me apart, so many good options to pick between. Absolutely brutal. Sucks too that games like the Witcher and BG3 are so fucking long that if they win that’s all the channel will be for like a year: a Shogun campaign would be done in a few months and we may be watching Baldur’s Gate by Christmas.

Desperately pitching for Morrowind, not only does it have the incredibly silly spell crafting with none of the limiters they steadily put in over Oblivion and Skyrim, it's just such a wild and wonderful world to explore with so many cool environments and interesting situations to come across. The characterisation is a bit thin, most of the NPCs are little more than wiki pages, but we're not here to watch Jon sit silently while NPCs talk at him, we're here for his shenanigans and commentary so it's a better fit for the channel than something more character heavy.

I've been watching Jon play games for almost a decade, and for most of that time I've been begging him to play The Witcher 3. It is in my opinion the best rpg from its generation, with deep interesting characters inhabiting a living, varied world. The city of Novigrad still holds the crown for the most complete and well-made city in any fantasy game. ... Which is why it pains me to say that I think everyone should vote for Baldur's Gate 3. In addition to all the wonderful things about that game that a million reviewers have already expressed better than I can, it is a game that feels made for Jon. The best part of any let's play on this channel is to see Jon find creative solutions to problems and carve his own path through a story. BG3 is a game that not only allows that without breaking down, but actively encourages it and adapts to even the most outlandish circumstances. It would be a series for the ages!

W3 is not a living world. Almost all NPCs are rooted to the spot and have no day/night cycle. And all objects are nailed down. And every fight against a particular type of enemy plays out exactly the same way every time according to your build, and there is no use of the environment in tackling enemies. And Geralt can't climb up a river bank I could in real life.

Dragon Age 2 gets a bad rap from the DA fanbase, because it was made in a little over a year, resulting in very little map variety. But what it lacks in locations it makes up for in story. This isn’t an RPG about saving the world, it’s about a groups of ****-ups, running around a city that’s constantly catching fire. It’s about some of the best written and messiest characters in fiction, and about a whole host of horrible blood mages that Jon can try and apologise for. It deserves it’s time in the sun.

Weirdly enough, that never bothered me, though that could be map variety was an issue in the original Mass Effect. The mainline missions were great, but having only four maps used for dozens of side quests got tedious after a while. Didn't stop it being a great game though.

Okay, I wasn't going to state my piece, but I've been scrolling though the comments and I've barely seen any raised hands for Mass Effect 3. This is what I'm voting for. Why? Because I discovered Jon though his Fallout NV YOLO run at a time when I had just finished NV and thought that a YOLO run was impossible. By watching him play, I learned so much more about NV than I did through my play though, and that goes for so many games. I've learned more about, not just the mechanics of Fallout, Skyrim, etc, but all of the little story and character things I missed. I want to continue that experience and complete the Mass Effect franchise. TLDR; I enjoy listening to Jon's depth of knowledge on video games that I've played and want to hear him talk about the last game in one of the best trilogies of all time. A series that I love and cannot believe doesn't exist in some form on the channel.

All of these are great! Love to see any one of these. I have a personal affinity to Shogun 2, as I was having a terrible game, bad shogun, and assigned a random guy to lead a fleet of canon ships to wreck everyone else's Navy. He did a great job, brought in desperately needed money and ranked up pretty fast. However, I was still just barely holding my lands together with an unpopular leader. That leader dies after a few more turns, and that's when I finally realize the admiral was the shogun's son. Instant popularity boost, troop moral, and long victory with a blitzkrieg of riflemen. This was well over 10 years ago, but I still remember this. I can't even remember what I had for breakfast yesterday.

It's the unique setting, which is not just your normal medieval europe with the serial numbers filed off. Morrowind is often considered to have the best written story of the elder scrolls games. Personal I think it's easily the best Bethesda game story and would love to see Jon's reaction to it. However, BG3 is an amazing game too so this is a hard choice for me. I'm probably going to vote Morrowind though. Jon would probably play Morrowind mostly unmodded without major game altering mods. There are very few full playthroughs of mostly vanilla Morrowind on KZbin, at least as far as I have been able to find. This is something I have an interest in seeing as my own experience with Morrowind was vanilla so it's harder to relate to it if it's heavily modded.

All good choices. My go-to pick is Morrowind. Beyond the reasons Jon stated, I think it has the most fascinating story in the series, and I think Jon's narrative style would fit really REALLY well with discovering it. But I will also support Dragon Age 2. It has a few mechanical and narrative shortcomings, but it's still my favorite in the series, with some of my favorite characters. Very few RPGs have done as good a job making me feel so invested in a setting.

Absolutely agree. BG3 is an amazing game and has received a ton of justified praise. But that also means it's been all over the entire internet already. Heck, Jon made two videos and a stream of it already. MATN is the best when diving into either weird or older or flawed gems, and/or games that give Jon a lot of opportunity to mess around with. Also, I feel when Jon is gonna miss something or skip something in BG3, the amount of people complaining will be insufferable. With a BG3 series would come a ton of expectations. Meanwhile basically every other game just has much lower "stakes". DA2 fans will already be happy for having DA2 be mentioned in 2024, similar with ME3. Morrowind is an amazing 20 year old playground of nonsense anyways. Shogun 2 would be a fun playground but as an RTS.

Abso-cocking-lutely should you play Morrowind. Not only is the Magic bloody bananas; a thing I learned early on is that there's technically no cap to Power Attack power. Like hold the button down for 15 minutes and you could theoretically one-shot anyone. It's just about getting somewhere where they aren't moving or attacking you during that time. The image, if you think of it while reading this, of a particular rude NPC sitting at their desk writing up shipping forms or eating their soup while some naff with a Spear stands behind them winding up while other NPCs walk around and do their generic dialogue like "Be careful with that." "Darn Stiltstriders prices have gone up again and I'll walk to the next settlement." etc. is just so funny

Gotta make my case for Morrowind in terms of ludicrousness for magic its by far the best of the series. there are far fewer limits to what can be acieved with stacking potions and spells. Jump across the entire map in a single bound, summon an army of daedra and undead by making a bunch of spells that summon that creature with one character difference in the spell name and casting them in sequence, drink a bunch of booze that fortifies strength and hit a person so hard both the person and your weapon are destroyed.

Normally, I'd vote for Morrowind, because I genuinely want to see it on here, but given it'll probably get its turn, and that Mass Effect 3 is no where near as long as the other games (and will be a much shorter series meaning the others will come up pretty quickly), I feel like I have to give it a vote to give it a chance.

MASS EFFECT 3, for two very important reasons: First, it plugs a major hole in the MATN channel catalogue. Jon has said for years that Mass Effect is one of his favorite series of all time, yet the final installment (of the main trilogy) remains conspicuously absent. This needs to be rectified. Second, it makes the most sense tactically for those (like myself) who want to see more than one of these games. Of all of them, ME3 is the shortest. Most of the other games are potential 50 episode commitments, and a few could easily go well longer than that. ME3 will not take anywhere near that long for Jon to finish, even on Insanity. Democracy Week usually ends up with its second and even third place finishers ending up high in the queue as well, so picking, say, Baldur's Gate or Morrowind effectively means that he won't get to any of these other games for at least a year. ME3 can be finished in a few months, increasing the likelihood of Jon picking up another well-placing game off this list sooner than later, before perhaps being distracted from it by future Democracy Weeks. This Democracy Week, vote for Mass Effect 3! (Paid for by the Systems Alliance.)
@Paradox-es3bl

50 ep commitments? That's vastlely underestimating how long a BG3 or a TW3 run would last. Both are worth the time, but as I said in another place, you could finish ME3 followed by DA2 in the time it would take to finish a couple others on the list. However my reasoning for ME3 is the same as Jon's. At one point I scoured MATN thinking there had to be a full series. I could remember him doing it, but I must have fabricated that memory. It's just wierd that he hasnt played it. Its an outstanging game, and LE really amped up the difficulty (IMO).

I've never gotten all that far into the story, but that's because you can just run around doing whatever you want. Unlike Oblivion, enchanting is done in your inventory menu and is available as soon as you get any soul gems. It can be hysterically broken. I think there's a decent chance BG3 is going to win, and I think that's a shame. I know a lot of people love the game, but hear me out here: it isn't going to work for Jon's style of video. A huge amount of BG3, and the reason people love it, is the companions. They're really well voice acted, and they're interesting characters. Problem is, Jon makes KZbin videos, and he commentates on them. Which either means long sections of time where Jon is just playing footage without commentating, or there will be massive cuts to the dialogue that actially makes people like the game. The other big reason is about storytelling. Skyrim and Oblivion worked super well because they both allowed Jon to tell a story, and in both cases, not necessarily a story the gale expected to tell. For all BG3 is said to be a game where you can "do anything," it's not a sandbox game in the way people like to think it is. It's a game where, ultimately, the story is exactly what it's meant to be, with variations on what side you ultimately support, but everything compounds into that specific story. The side stories usually end up tying back to that main plot. The games that people always seem to love most on the channel, and ultimately end up doing the best, are games where Jon can just abandon his duties as the chosen hero and mess around a bit. I think the people who are really excited about BG3 are ultimately going to be disappointed, because opportunities for that kind of storytelling (specifically hpw Jon tends to do it) aren't all that common in the game. My two cents, at least. I hope whatever game gets picked makes a great series and I hope it does really well, regardless of what the series is.

Now that you mention it, I feel like Witcher 3 also suffers for similar reasons. Though I can 100% see Jon being able to make up for this in Witcher by just having lots of commentary inbetween dialog where he hems and haws over the various moral/ethical quandries in the game, pick the worst possible choice due to either a misunderstanding or an amusing reason (such as wanting their hat) and then instantly regret the outcome as a result haha. Also, if Jon thought the people of Oblivion had scary murder basements, wait until he sees the Witcher 3 scary murder shacks. My first vote is going to be for Morrowind though and I'll be sticking to that until it either wins or isn't an option. The stories I can see Jon making from that game are endless. I'm also genuinely curious what his preferred great house would be, I feel like it'd be either Hlaalu or Telvanni for character reasons, but I can totally see it being Redoran b/c he decides he likes the funny crab architecture.

The voice acting in BG3, which is probably the best ever in any game, will be a bit diminished by Jon's play-and-presenting-style. That's true. But "It"s not a real sandbox game"? It is indeed not a real sandbox game. It's a game with missions, like all RPG's I know (except Kenshi, but that game is not up for the vote). Almost all of the missions in BG3 are optional. And all of them have several ways of accomplishing them. And what's more, you have plenty of choices independent from the missions. I give it to you: The intro is railroaded. And there is a bottleneck of plotlines between Act 2 and Act 3, the end of Act 2 is poor in options. But you have to put this in perspective: Just Act 1 and Act 2 are bigger in content than any of the other games in the list. Honestly I would be happy if Jon plays "just" Act 1 and Act 2. Ketheric is the final boss. End of the Game. Baldur's Gate III is so rich it will still take 100+ episodes to play two out of three acts. I love it when Jon plays old games. If Baldur's Gate 3 doesn't win now, it will only come back to the channel in ten years as one of those historic, melancholic games. I don't want to wait that long.

@@cloudandclear5354 If you're looking for a more "sandbox" RPG, then you'll absolutely love watching him play Morrowind! Even the main quest is optional! You can kill NPCs that will make it impossible to complete, and the game will let you know but allow you to continue anyway. There is SO much fun to have in Morrowind without ever even touching the main quest, and the game barely even pushes you to it. JON JON: If not, there is a DA2 Gibbed mod that will make those choices and make a "fake" DAO game to put in (the Tapestry does not import into DA2, baron; that's for DAI). This gibbed mod file also fixes where the choices of DAO are still bugged (such as the events in Awakening) that still end up giving you all the (conflicting) quests instead of the one that applies by setting the correct flags. HIGHLY recommend using this if one has lost the original DAOworld state. Unfortunately the impact isn't as much as Bioware hyped it to be. For a lot of them it just adds or changes a few lines of dialogue. A bunch are bugged and you would need to use an external tool to get them to trigger. One major decision is completely ignored. Bioware switched to the tapestry for a couple reasons. One it lets them fix the bugged flags from Origins/awakening. Two, it means you can carry your decisions across console generations. Bad news is that when the site eventually goes down you won't be able to set your world state without external tools.

Shogun Total War 2 - it's incredible. For me it's the last Total War before they started getting a bit too complicated to still be fun. And it's feudal Japan, the unit variation is great and the art & aesthetic is awesome. Plus so many other creators already do/have done the RPGs he mentioned and Jon's Total war vids are always highly clippable.

I kinda think I'll be outvoted by all the RPG fans who watch this channel, but Shogun II is definitely my vote. We've not had classic Total War on this channel for a long, long time now, and I have to rewatch the Mercenary Only challenge whenever I need my MATN Total War fix. Maybe we can even talk him into dipping his toes into FOTS so we can watch him gatling-gun cavalry using the artillery first person mode, and I for one very much enjoyed the naval battles in the Empire playthrough. Vote Shogun II!

It absolutely has to be Baldur's Gate 3. It's easily the most impactful RPG to come out since the time of New Vegas and/or Mass Effect 2 (not a big fan of ME3 in general). Among its strengths are: the main story, choices that can be made throughout that story, side content, companion quests (some of which feel like ME2 loyalty missions), and RPG character build mechanics which impact the combat with hundreds of possibilities. It feels really strange that it's not on the channel already, and I think it's unfortunate that Jon bet on the wrong horse and made a full series of Starfield instead at the time.

Morrowind is one of my absolutely favourite games! This is actually the first time I've commented on one of Jon's videos, despite watching for well over a decade now. Morrowind is so incredibly easy to break at higher levels. It's fun, however, to start at the very southern tip of the island in Morrowind and then take a single jump to eventually, with good aim, land on Solstheim. Less fun if you forgot to take into account landing... :P

Such a difficult decision! There’s no wrong answer - Jon would do an outstanding job on any of these classic games. My pitch: Jon is a great storyteller who can take relatively lifeless video game characters (like a Skyrim companion or a generated Roman general) and weave an epic tale. I think that Shogun 2, with its factions and clan dynamics in a 4X historical setting, would give Jon a really fascinating canvas to work with. Having said that, I look forward to watching the winning series - it’ll be great fun!

@@Nikelaos_Khristianos You’re totally right - that’s a very fair point. I think that Jon’s storytelling ability can surpass their limitations and enhance & deepen the experience. Morrowind -- because it's arguably the best Elder Scrolls ever made. People will say Skyrim, but Morrowind has a special place in my heart. It wasn't the first Elder Scrolls I played, but like New Vegas on the Fallout side it's the one that brings about the biggest pang of nostalgia. And for a game made twenty years ago, it is still surprisingly playable today. I know Witcher 3 is a better game overall (no argument). I know Baldur's Gate 3 is probably more beloved. I know Mass Effect 3 is a deeply flawed masterpiece. But if you want Jon to have that experience some of us had growing up and playing Morrowind to death, you should consider voting for Morrowind. Or Sheogorath will eat your firstborn.

My vote is on Baldur's Gate 3. I was torn between that and Morrowind, however I've ultimately settled on BG3 for the following reasons: Firstly, it looks absolutely gorgeous. Whilst Morrowind is not without its own charm and a strong artistic identity, I can't help but think BG3 with all of its modern bells and whistles will be a real treat visually. Secondly, much like Jon, I have never really played this game fully. I adore the notion of a true DnD simulator in video game format, complete with all of the dice rolls, in-depth stats, theorycrafting and optimisation. Granted, I wouldn't understand half of it, however I would certainly learn a lot along the way. Thirdly, it feels like a very cosy choice for me. I can imagine myself settling in to watch an episode and just getting drawn right into the world. The branching storylines, the numerous options available to you, getting to know the world, the characters and the lore. It seems like the perfect kind of game for Jon to really sink his teeth into and get into the nitty-gritty.

My thoughts on Democracy week (listed in order of preference): Witcher 3: My top choice for Democracy Week. It's got an open world, interesting decisions, fast paced engaging combat, and an excellent story. All these ingredients should add up to a fantastic MATN series. The series would be a good length, but not too long like some other series on this list. Morrowind: My number 2 pick. The series will likely be similar to Oblivion and be wildly entertaining with Jon trying to become the master of movement speed. It is not my number one because 1) I think the series will be very long which may cause it to get stale after a while like Oblivion and 2) the graphics are a bit dated. Shogun 2: Fun classic Total War game. Probably will be the shortest series on this list. But what's more fun than seeing Jon show off his mastery of classic Total War?! Not higher because the previous 2 games have a much higher ceiling. BG3: Potentially an interesting series with some excellent opportunities to roleplay. However, I think the turn-based combat will slow this series down. In addition, it will likely be a very long series. DA2: Similar thoughts to BG3, but rated lower as I'm not as familiar with the Dragon Age Series. Mass Effect 3: This is the only game that I don't think has the potential to make a great series. I don't think there is anything special about showing off the base game of ME3. It will be similar to ME2 series. Maybe if we had recent series of ME1 and ME2 that gave us a coherent storyline I might feel different. Or possibly you could turn this into a fun challenge run (e.g. ME1 No Guns). However, I think just ME3 on Insanity difficulty would be a poorly watched and not very interesting.
@Nikelaos_Khristianos
@Nikelaos_Khristianos 12 күн бұрын
DA2 would be more viable as a series than Witcher 3 - purely because it's a helluva lot shorter, I genuinely think you're really underestimating just how long the Witcher 3 is - especially for someone like Jon. It's also not turn-based, it's real-time - but the turn-based factor didn't stop DA Origins, KOTOR or Skies of Arcadia from being great series. But hell, I very much think that Jon should play Witcher 1

The Witcher 3 is so heavily content filled and has some amazing characters and side missions-- now, the same can be said for other games in this category I'm sure, but I think it would be amazing seeing Jon dive into a fully blind playthrough of The Witcher 3 as it's not really something that he has experienced before. I love seeing content creator's first time reactions to games instead of having "I remember this from last time I played..." moments throughout the series. The blind discovery is how so many of us experienced the game, and I think that would make for the most entertaining series. Plus, for those of you who love the Witcher, it's a long game and will end up being a lengthy series, especially if Jon dives into Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine too.
