I found an RPG called Open Legen Open Source RPG. Death rules are cool. If a PC is helpless because of being at 0 HP or some condition, any damaging attack is considered a lethal attack, and the PC must make a CON save or die.

I usually try to stick to rules that will apply "across the board". Like towards NPCs as well as PCs.

@@kentuckyrex Rules as written, you can totally apply the killing blow rule to NPCs as well. That way, if a PC reduces an NPC's HP to 0, the narrative of the story is the NPC is KOed, not dead. This means your players would ALWAYS be faced with the moral decision "kill or spare". That sounds interesting to me.

Still debating which system to use for upcoming campaign, but Basic Fantasy is on the shortlist, and likely using Morgansfort mashed with a few other things. It's been a while since I completely homebrewed anything, but I also used to be quite good at altering modules. There's a module for the old 90s Robotech RPG that I've run five times, and only one of them was Robotech. (At that point, it's mostly just using the maps to save me ink and paper.)

Morgansfort should be issued to all new GMs. It's absolutely full of great material.

Running Morgansfort at the moment for a couple friends. Renamed it Bracken Keep since I am using Small Niche Game's Duchy of Valnwall setting in my custom world. So far the party has forayed into the Old Island Fortress a few times, basically clearing a single room each time (no spoilers). Started with the Chaotic Caves and moved over to Morgansfort so they can switch between the two as desired. If your players are coming from 5E, definitely spell out that character mortality is a real issue - especially at 1st level and there is no shame in running from a situation that they would have figured would have been a cake walk in the other system.

Yeah, there's a few points I wish I would've made several months ago in this. I think that it's a good thing in general to remind players about the differing philosophies in play. I have a Play by Post that is made of 5e players and they learned real quick, despite the warnings. My Thursday group is a group made of varying ages. One guy is a year younger, while the rest are 10-12 years older than me. A group of forever GMs. They TPKed in the western hallway after room 1 in Old Island Fortress and now they've taken to strategic planning to painstaking degrees. It's been enthralling to see and hear them plan this adventure out like that.
