I spent 5 of my 8 years in the USAF at Offutt. Being from the Omaha, Council Bluffs area, I loved it! I served from 1975-1983 it was still SAC HQ.

Great video. I grew up at Offutt in the 80s as a kid and had my first job at the Commissary and my first school being Fort Crook Elementary. Now in my 40s, I am just looking back with fond memories and though lots has changed on base and the buildings look newer, its a nice trip down memory lane. :) I remember taking the shuttle bus from the base hospital onto base and would use the Gym and the bowling alley until I was old enough to drive. Ah, the good ole days. Offutt was an excellent base for an air force brat! :) Also, sad to hear they are closing the Capehart Pool. I spent many summers there.

I was stationed there in the early '70s. The historical buildings that are offices across from general's row were still being used as barracks. They were open bay, but I was lucky and lived in one of the more "modern" cement block buildings that had two man rooms. One apocryphal story going around was that there was still a rule in the base regs against shooting buffalo from inside of a building through a window.

I was there is the late 90's for a day picking up a friend. I never saw such dumbfounded looks by the gate guards when I showed them an Ontario Driver's licence to match my Canadian car and tried to explain that I was staying over night and then leaving with someone who was stationed there. LOL after calling him and confirming the story they let me in. I thought at the time here I am a tiny harmless Canadian being grilled like I was far more trouble. This was also before 9-11 so the base was in an open status. Now I live minutes from a major Canadian air wing and I think of Offutt all the time.

I moved to Omaha on the early 80’s. As an automotive service tech, I had a job by 11AM on Monday my first day of looking. But “BIG” story is the Retired owner who came in to work. We quickly became friends. He told me about the Martin Bomber plant at Offut as he was led Tech of a four man engine crew. He was in charge of the quality of their engine. Once built & installed, both led engine techs and a pilot with a small crew took each bomber on its first test flight. He wanted to make sure his engine did not fail. He does like to fly even when I knew him as he told me he was as nervous as a long tail cat in a room full of rocking chairs. I miss him now but had to share this story of responsibility.
