The Ring of Brodgar is one of Orkney’s most iconic landmarks and a must-visit destination for history and archaeology enthusiasts. Located on the mainland of Orkney, this ancient Neolithic stone circle is steeped in mystery and dates back over 4,500 years. It’s part of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney UNESCO World Heritage Site, which also includes the Standing Stones of Stenness, Maeshowe, and Skara Brae.
The Ring of Brodgar is thought to have originally consisted of 60 stones, though today, 36 still stand. These imposing stones form a perfect circle with a diameter of 104 meters, making it one of the largest stone circles in Britain. The purpose of the Ring of Brodgar remains unclear, but it’s believed to have been a ceremonial or religious site, possibly linked to celestial events.
Surrounded by a natural amphitheater of hills and nestled between the Harray and Stenness lochs, the setting of the Ring of Brodgar is as dramatic as it is beautiful. This site offers a unique glimpse into prehistoric life and the ingenuity of Neolithic communities.
If you’re visiting Orkney, it’s worth taking your time to walk around the circle, feel the ancient stones, and soak in the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Whether you’re into history, photography, or just love a good mystery, the Ring of Brodgar will leave you in awe.
