Thanks, Leanne, for your tutorials. I have built a small tree in WikiTree and then have been merging it with other trees that include the same family name but from other software platforms. Since this process is a bit overwhelming, I wonder if you would consider providing a tutorial video on using GEDCompare to enlarge WikiTree. There are a number of topics that would be useful to address, such as (1) how to split up a GEDCOM to include a manageable and useful group of profiles, (2) how to focus first on suggested matches in your GEDCompare Report and what happens when you select "match," (3) whether to edit a matched profile and if so, what kind of email to send if there is a manager for the profile (i.e. the editing process), and (4) how you can encourage others to collaborate with you so you do not have to add or edit lots of profiles that are far removed from the particular set of ancestors you are interested in. Thanks for considering this suggestion. Tom Wickenden

I love that you are clear, concise, and sequential. I am a "butterfly" consumer of information and I need people like you. Thank you - this was a great help, although I am still quite lost about getting started. But it is not your fault- you are great!

great to hear about merging, and the mentoring program. I have never heard of a mentoring program for genealogy, but you have stirred my interest!

Faith, Family, Friends are my Foundation. I have built my life on that belief. My birth date was November, 3, 1944 in a small West Texas town I’d Stamford, which was the closest hospital from the Davis farm where we lived. I had one brother. He was 3 years older. Later our family moved to Abilene, Texas for better work opportunities for our parents and better school choices for my brother and I.

I found myself unable to add my tree to Wikitree due to deliberatly entered inaccuracies I was forced to accept. IE: Grand Pre was in Acadia until the Treaty of Utrecht but Wikitree allows many of different names, but Acadia is apparently not allowed to stand on it's own: Nova Scotia and Canada are regularly added, and even Nouvelle-France! That region was NEVER in Nouvelle-France. The location should be what it was called during the ancestor's lifetime. Acadia is NOW called Nova Scotia, NOW in Canada, however it wasn't in the 1670s. Another example: people regularly make up a fantasy name for indigenous for whom there is no record and it's allowed to remain and forced on those of us who choose not to have falsehoods in our tree. One of those with a fantasy name is my ancestor. I can't allow Wikitree to change my tree with known bull pucky, and I certainly won't be a manager of it, but if I don't it's sitting there, up for grabs. Years ago, when I was trying to add my documented tree to the Wikitree project, I wrote the Acadian Project and I've repeatedly tried to correct an indigenous fantasy name. What I was told, and what it boils down to is I HAVE to accept it. Nonsense. I pulled my tree off the site years ago.

Thanks Leanne, after seeing your tutorial I went back on one of the genealogy sites and found 254 "conflict", such as too old, kids birth after parents died. Going to clean up before I add the file. Thanks

There are many good help documents right on the WikiTree website. Go to "help" on the upper right of website on the dropdown menus. It will show you how to merge. Also look here on KZbin using WikiTree and the key word for your question.

Your not starting at the beginning !!!! What is the volunteer stuff about ?? I can't even start looking until I do this ….Upload a Gedcom, what is that. Your using terminology no one has heard before..
@leannecooper38486 жыл бұрын
Hi Pat. I will be doing a future video on uploading a Gedcom. This is done if you already have a family tree elsewhere and you want to import it into WikiTree. For personalized help on getting started with WikiTree, I recommend you contact a mentor, who can help you out: www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Contact_a_Mentor

Hi Pat ... as I mentioned to Carolyn up above, a good place to start learning about WikiTree is on the "About" page: www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:About_WikiTree ... even more information is on the Intro to WikiTree page: www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:How_to_Use_WikiTree

You don't have to upload a gedcom. I didn't. You can add your self your father, grandfather etc. I hate profiles that have ged.coms.
@DeborahNystromREVELN4 жыл бұрын
@@Fillows4 I uploaded three GEDCOMs and then went about the task of figuring out how to clean up the most essential profiles first. The GEDComs saved me a LOT of time. I'm documenting four major family lines, thousands of photos, US Census data, Sweden, South America, etc. The GEDComs, though I didn't know how to get started at first, eventually made sense and gave me a structure to work with.
