Henlo! I am The President of Chickenlandia and I want to welcome you to Chickenlandia, a magical place where my pet chickens (and a few ducks) live an awesome life. In this video, I share a simple hack that I learned from my local wildlife rescue. It could keep your chickens from being attacked by predators and it's very easy to do. Hope you love it! #chickenlandia #welcometochickenlandia #urbanchickens

Yes, predators dont care who is around when their hungry. I had a hawk almost get my Easter egger as I was working on something not too far away. Luckily I was able to run over like a mad woman screaming and waving my arms then it let go of my chicken, Reba! She was shaken up and had some blood by her eye, but she was ok. After that, I've been so paranoid and only let them free range when I can watch them "like a hawk"....🤣👍 I love my girls!

I admire 💛 your acknowledgement for the eco system. I had to learn this too. My fave Americana Diva was attacked by a fox a year ago & she passed. We back up to a cow pasture that homes many predators. My husband spread his urine daily for months to get control of the situation. It works! I was willing to do anything. I enjoy your channel.

Thank you for the video! We have a few raccoons that visit our backyard, along with our three chickens. While we adore raccoons, they did manage to take two of our chickens. Despite this, we don’t want to get rid of them; instead, we’ve decided to reinforce our chicken coop to keep everyone safe. We actually enjoy watching the raccoons and chickens coexist. Raccoons typically don’t stay long-they move on in search of easier meals. My 13-year-old daughter insisted that we not harm the raccoons, so we built a stronger coop. Now, with the changes in place, our whole family is happy in the end.

A couple of coyotes got a hold of my little doggie, he was aggressive to them, and had him at both ends, i yelled at coyotes’put him down!’ And to my surprise they obeyed, my doggie ran back to house and passed due to internal injuries nonetheless. Thank you for the ammonia tip! On a new journey to grow my own food and I started prepping my beds and planted some seeds and a few nights ago a rather large raccoon was about to get in my small bed. I tapped on my window and she back away and slowly walked off. I couldn’t get over at how clean and fluffy she was and that look she gave me of I’m sorry just smells good out here is the blood meal. This is of course my narrative. I chose to live in and around nature I have 3.25 acres and I always feel a rush of excitement when I catch a glimpse of a small red fox run by or a deer and doe eating my tiger lilies or my forgetful resident squirrel Charlie who now and again goes on a major hunt through my flower beds in search of his stash of acorns and walnuts. I can go on and on as we have so many wonderful animals we share our land with and like you I value them, respect the role they play as we do in the biodiversity and ecosystem we all live in heck I name any animal I see mor than three times and would always deter rather than immediately think of “ just ending their live”. High five to you sis👏👏👏😘❤️👍

I use motion censor lights and also have white Christmas lights on the coop from dusk til dawn. I have seen the fox on my cameras walk up to the coop, the motion light clicks on, and he takes off. Now I know they might get smart to it, but so far it has worked. That hasn’t stopped the raccoons unfortunately. They don’t care. Fortunately my runs/coops are Fort Knox.

Thank you for sharing. I just lost one of my rescue ducks here in Australia where we have a lot of foxes. She had flown out on to the broader property and we believe she encountered a fox. Like you I was sad however I also understand that the fox is also just trying to feed their babies and survive. Interesting you found the ammonia effective, we tip out the used cat litter tray contents around the perimeter of our animal run and apparently this will deter foxes here. So far we haven’t had foxes coming over into the run. Fingers crossed 🤞love your positive and insightful channel 💕

I have a few special needs babies and I am always worried about them. I have a runt khaki duck, a half blind rooster, and an attack survivor speckled Sussex currently, but I have also had a khaki duck with tendon issues that caused her to have a withered leg. The special needs babies tend to become our very close babies. When I lost Lady Hopsalot I was devastated. I am technically a Homestead meat and egg farm, but I love all my babies. Special needs and even retired babies are allowed to live out their days. The retired babies did their jobs well and deserve a good senior life, in my opinion. And the special needs babies should be loved no matter if they are different. I know alot of farms like mine don't carry that opinion, but I do. Just because they don't lay well or breed anymore doesn't make them useless either. My really old and retired farm mascot (Link the Lakenvelder) doesn't breed anymore, but he and his retired brown leghorn hen Sunrise both protect my Rowen flock, and they don't like anything around those quackers. Sorry for the loss of your feather puppies, and hope your flock stays safe from predators. (We call them feather puppies because our 15 year old guardian has to meet every chick on our farm and thinks the birds are all her puppies)

Not only do we not want to disturb an ecosystem but the raccoon is only doing what the raccoon has instincts to do in order to survive. How can you ever blame someone or some creature just for being themselves, being what they are designed to be. Great vid. Thank you for the tip.

We dont have racoons or foxes around but plenty of coyotes. Everynight i see the motion lights going off and on (due to the rabbits mostly) and the camera is set up with motion and sound activation which will alert my phone. Never would I have imagined how i would be so dedicated to the welfare of a few chickens. Crazy! But my chickens give me eggs all the time so its my duty to keep them safe...lol

A raccoon tore through metal hardware cloth in our chicken coop window and killed a bunch of chickens. Plastic only works to keep flying birds out of the chicken yard. Raccoons are excursions in our area bcz people release them near our house that were caught in other areas causing problems. We caught 23 in a few weeks, sometimes 2 a day for several days in a row and I can assure you they were not the same ones.

Thank you Madam President. I’m about to expand my coop but I cannot afford the hardware cloth, which I used for my run, for the expansion, only much weaker chicken wire ☹️ I’m glad to learn this ammonia trick. Do you have any suggestions besides this to help me with protecting my girls. I live waaay out in the boonies and we have more predators than I can count. I’m really concerned about the vulnerability that I may leaving my feathered family and it would crush me to lose any of them. Also, I’m curious about what you use as a barrier under your wood fence. Thank you for all the education that you’ve provided myself and others. I REALLY look up to you 💕 P.S. I love your new intro but then again I loved your previous ones

Thank you! If I were you and if you can swing it, I would double up on the chicken wire. You can do that around the fencing as well. It's not as strong as hardwire mesh but it's decent, and you can layer it so that the holes are smaller. It's more money but still cheaper than hardwire cloth. You can also bury thin slabs of wood down so they can't dig in, but it would need to be replaced sooner than later so I don't know how cost effective it would be in the long run. Always check craigslist and free cycle groups because you never know!
@chrisinedison

@@WelcometoChickenlandia That’s a great suggestion! I got a huge roll of 5’ tall chicken wire so I can definitely double up the wire. I also have some leftover hardwire mesh that I will cut in strips and skirt down and outward around the base of the chicken wire. I’m thinking of buying some inexpensive pavers and put those on top of the buried skirting. Thank you for replying and getting my wheels a turning. God bless!

There was no blood. No missing feathers. But my other roosters were absolutely catatonic. My husband is a hunter so when I told him to go look, he found the raccoons tracks. I was anew owner and I dint have a run they stay out for about 4 hours till my son came home, at the time I dint see hawks, I had to take a day off from work and hire a helper to built a run with hardware cloth, I hear to collect a man's 1st morning pee and spray around the area, I have not try it but I am about to and will let you know what happened.

I really don't understand how the netting could help with raccoons. Raccoons can tear through chicken wire like it's soggy paper...and netting would be nothing to them. I thought netting was only to keep out hawks?

The netting I have is super strong, way stronger than chicken wire. But yes, you’re right, with enough time a raccoon could get through it. However during the day that’s unlikely to happen. At night it would be a big problem if all I had was the netting, which is why I secure them in the coop. :)

any info on the netting you used to cover your chickens?
@1N2themystic

Actually, ammonia is not particularly toxic unless you mix it with bleach. Your body makes ammonia basically as a byproduct of the food we eat. It's in your urine, which incidentally can be used in place of ammonia, if you're not squeamish about that sort of thing. Probably with better results.

I have a bobcat issue. I have netting up but it jumps through it. I can't use hardware cloth for the top because of the way my run is set up. I will try that ammonia trick until I can trap it! We have had bobcats ever since I got chickens but this one is out at all hours of the day. I start throwing old eggs into the woods so maybe she can feed her babies more idk.

Oh man! Have you contacted your local wildlife rescue? That’s what I would do at this point. They may be able to give you some resources or even trap and relocate if it’s coming into your yard like that. Good luck!

Vanessa here 👋 I'm thinking I may have to cull my velvet. Do you know the best way that won't cause any pain or anxiety? Almost my whole flock got over avian pocks. I had to lance her eye and I filled all of them up with oragano, garlic, colloidal silver. Toothpast saved the rest of the flock 🤷‍♀️ she is the bottom of the pecking order poor girl. I hate to even think about it😭 She seemed like she was getting better. She can see again

I’m so sorry. It sounds like you gave her really good care. There are many videos on humanely culling chickens here on KZbin. You can give them the flower remedy Rescue Remedy to help with the stress, or if you can find another flower essence combo that helps with passing that would be great. ❤️

I lost my whole flock to a new dog in the neighborhood that I didn't know about until it was too late. 😪 I have just built a large run (I feel confident the coop is secure) from 10 x 6 chain link panels. I cant afford to cover it all in hardware cloth. But I have a ton of chicken wire! Will that be sufficient? Two feet up and two feet out! All the gates have been secured with an apron and hardware cloth. The run is covered by heavy plastic bird netting, not the flimsy stuff for berries. More like a deer fence with 1x3/4 in holes. Will this be enough?

@WelcometoChickenlandia
@WelcometoChickenlandia 3 жыл бұрын
The wildlife center told me it can help as a deterrent but if you have an infestation you will likely have to take other measures. And usually the issue with rats is they hang out under the coop or very close and you don't want to be putting ammonia where it might affect your chickens.
