Weld retip 2 claws on a diamond with Lampert PUK 3

Retipping 2 claws on a solitaire diamond ring in 18ct white gold using the Lampert PUK 3 Professional Plus welder on Standard 7ms 30% power. I push the tipping wire towards the weld if the claw needs beefing up with more metal, then drag some down the side of the claw if needed (sometimes needs more added by feeding in thin wire). The claws only need to be shaped afterwards. There is a photo of the finished job at the end of the video.

Diamonds are the only stones that you don't have to be careful with unless they are of a very low clarity. All other faceted stones can be welded near to but only with caution. The blast of the weld will blow small pieces off coloured stones. I regularly retip and weld near coloured stones (sapphires,rubies,emeralds,tanzanites etc.)with no damage by keeping the weld far enough away from the stone, this is where practice and experience come in. You need to know how close to the stone you can weld without damaging it. Pearls,opals,coral etc. are to be avoided as the surface will burn.

Sorry, me again, what are the dimensions of the D shape tipping wire you use, 2mm x 1.25mm? difficult to tell by the video

This was a big ring so the wire was thick. I have become very organized and have a full range of widths in both flat and d shaped wire (for traditional flat shape claws and rounded claws respectively). This makes it easy to use the correct width wire for the claw I am tipping. The flat wire is usually 0.35mm thick and the d shaped about 0.5mm thick. The widths range from about 0.6mm to 1.1mm. The average claw is about 0.75 or 0.85mm wide.

Hi man I want to buy a new lampert but the cost of the new Puk 5 is so expensive, this model is similar to the new Puk? because one person have one in a $3,650.00 dollars I´m from Mexico

Not sure that will be available. I pull mine down myself, starting off with round wire. I roll it down for the flat wire and have a d shape draw plate for the other.

You can probably tell that I am building my knowledge and experience, again thank you. I will have to go with off the shelf until I purchase a rolling mill (well a good one). It has been a pleasure and if your ever in the west midlands call by our shop. What your doing is great.

Hi, the presets are in the description. For most retipping I use about 25% power. Less power for smaller claws and up to 35% for thicker claws.
