People like things to be simple. They want to use the same gas that they TIG weld with in their MIG setup (or the other way around). Lots of people ask if they can use one gas for all their processes and the answer is really no.
There is a reason that certain gasses are recommended for specific applications and processes.
Today we are going to show you what happens if you try to use your 100% Argon bottle to MIG weld Carbon steel.

You solved my problem. Ive got an old telwin mig that I bought 40 years ago to weld quarter panels and floors when restoring cars. It worked great but the gun/ cable wore out and I couldn’t find a replacement till last year. I have a bottle of 75/25 at home but I haven’t used it in about 5 years. I had a project here at work so I bought the old girl in and hooked up to the 100% argon line instead of using my tank. I couldn’t get any decent bead out of it no matter what I tried. I now have that answer thanks to you.

I guess the obvious question (for me) coming out of this video is - since you say you have all the various gas mixes available why don't you SHOW US the difference with the same settings and different gasses. For example you say you get undercut (or something) with pure argon. Show the undercut with pure argon and then switch gasses and show how it is eliminated. You say you don't like the profile of the weld with the pure argon. Then switch gasses and show us how it gets better. Everybody seems to have an opinion. You are in the unique position to show the differences having various gasses and machines at your disposal. Thanks for the videos. I really enjoy them.

You need significantly different settings on different gas mixes to get good welds (CO2 vs C25 being the two that I've tried). With the wrong settings it'll come out crappy even with the best equipment.

True I guess. But it appears (in his opinion) there were no settings from "typical" to ridiculous that produced a good weld with pure argon. SO was the point of this video to prove that you can't get a good MIG weld with pure argon? Sorry I'm just trying to find a take away here. I'm still learning and I don't even use MIG. Great video's. I'm learning a lot.

@@davesage9190it’s not just “his opinion”. The welding industry does extensive testing because reall welding is not done at home in the garage where weld don’t matter that much. Welding has been around for over a hundred years and MiG for almost as long. There are always a few people who think they know more than what industry has found to work and not work. They’re wrong.

Hey, that was really interesting. I used the MIG at my Menz Shed today, and it was connected to argon with no other bottles to switch to. The person who last used it was not there so I went ahead and used it and I got that same tall, thin bead. I have a feeling that when that person is back, he will say that it makes no difference and we might as well make do with the one bottle. We even had a spare bottle of argon! I've been retired 17 years now, and I never counted myself as a great welder (I worked 40 years as a toolmaker at Ford Research & Engineering in the UK), and my near sight is crap and the MIG welder we have is no great shakes, but I know I can still do a lot better than the result using an argon shield gave me today. I'm just glad I used more than enough weld on todays job, so it should hold.

I know this is an older video but, I have been trying different gasses on a older Lincoln 100 that I converted to gas from flux in my early days of welding. Using a C-10 mixture of 90% argon and 10% CO2 running at a #28 flow rate has this machine running better than I ever thought possible. In some occasions I increase the flow rate up to as high as 40 but rarely, as I am also using. 023 and. 025 wire. I now have a small portable unit, that runs on 120V, I can use in a bind off my generator and get decent welds.

@@adrianayala9753 As I said. 100% argon wellding is for marine A4 stainless steel where you wellding pure inox because of rust. It is for fatt 10+ mm fatt material. I used Mig mag welldings but for thickest mm like 0.4 to 0.1mm is better use tig wellding machine. You get Smoother welds. Because when you wellding with 100% Argon or 90/10 you need high amperage because you need to make weld mellting on material like lava. It needs to be smooth and soft. Not harsh. Gettin that sweat in your eyes ain't fun, last year my helper by mistake put 100% argon on the mig, 035, 70s6, I put 2,000 lb helper rubber springs on a 1ton rear end, welded the pads on and said what's wrong ? The bead had a high crown, didn't seam to have good penetration, so I stopped, cut of the pads and stick welded 1/8 inch 7018, then as I cut off the pads it DID have pretty good penetration but that high crown and arc was too smooth fooled me, anyway I played with settings still high crown, I shut it down as I was closing the bottle, Aha!!!, there it was 100% argon !!! As an aside, I've tried to buy things like 90Ar-10CO2, Argon 1%O2, others you mentioned there... and local welding supplies had NO IDEA what I was talking about, didn't seem to want to get some in... so that's why I have a bunch of flow meters and try to mix stuff on the spot for labs. I have found that businesses that claim "If we don't have it, we'll get it" don't actually mean that, it's more like "If we don't have it, you don't need it"! SMITH makes these gas-mixing boxes with knobs on the front, you can just dial up a gas mixture... that's what I really want!

Thanks for proving this point man. I learned this lesson a long time ago, thinking that my machine was sucky, because it wouldn't flow a good puddle. Ironically I thought that 100% Argon had to be way better than 75/25. Then I ran some .030 on a buddy's junky Harbor Freight machine with 75/25, and it welded rather nice. Hmm..how the heck is this backyard welder out-performing my Miller?? So yeah,...hooked up a bottle of 75/25 to it and what do ya know?....it flows like butter. Thnx again guys, these bits and tips are gold.

Weld , grind and paint....... But after yesterday's repair. I definitely noticed a change in pentration flow and bead profile in my mig welding. And my stick welding is loads beter now....... Being self taught will only get you so far in some things... Technique and values are good information to have .....

I had a small one man shop, I ended up with 5-6 different gasses...Oxy, Acet, Argon, C02, 90/8/2 and some helium....

We use a 90/10 mix and an 80/20 mix with 811N1 .045 wire dual shield flux and the 90/10 is more of a spray 80/20 is for most everything else including overhead. My personal setup preference is 80/20 .045 at 28.2 volts and 490 ipm for vertical and 29.5 volts and 575 ipm for flat to do a 3/16" bead size and 630 to 650 ipm for anything bigger... the 90/10 is more of a flat weld only gas mix. it's awesome for spray transfer but it's so hot it has higher tendencies to give you undercut in the worst places!

If you were in a pinch and just needed to tack something together straight argon could be used. The use of straight argon as shown in the video does exactly what you just saw....produces poop. The comment you made about oxygen and that others say "oxygen is detrimental to the weld". Well yes it is in large enough amounts. Common shielding gases for mig welding that use a mix with oxygen does not contain high enough levels of oxygen to negatively affect the weld. Typical mig wires such as an S-6 or an S-3 contain enough deoxidizers to compensate for this and more. As long as you have an argon rich environment, 80% or more, you can run in spray. Great video.

I arrived here needing to finish up a small project and ran out of C25 but have a tank of argon. Seeing this I have to ask how much welding on a flat sheet of 3/16” with no joint which is sitting directly on top of what is likely a 1/2” sheet of the table.. will greatly affect it like a heatsink and not allow for good penetration unless you really crank up the heat. In other words, I’d like to see this done with the test plate clamped off to the edge of the table to see the setting differences.

At 8 minutes I noticed an etching effect similar to AC on aluminum, it was when you outran this etching effect that the puddle would sputter and give off its obnoxious noise contesting the action. I've done straight argon mild Steel worm tracks undercut , get the right gear change the wire( to dual Shield or similar )or change the gas.

Hoping you guys can help me. I just got the esab 215 ic to use for mig brazing for automotive use. Can’t get the setting right seems to worp the metal and put a lot of material down. Is the rebel a pulse machine I can’t find any info on that. Machines like the HTP pro pulse 200 have a setting for silicon bronze (mig brazing). Because of high strength steels being used in vehicles today they want the lower heat of the silicon bronze instead of traditional mig welds.

Newbie here, but I see you turning up the heat to make it lay down, so why do you keep jacking up the wire speed with it? Seems to me if you want it to lay down, more heat and a slower wire speed would come closer to doing it.

Voltage tends to broaden the weld, wire adds heat though they are interrelated.

I ran out of CO2 one day and tried Argon and Argon CO2 mix and found I had to pour the gas on at high volume rates to rid the weld of brown haze, only with high gas rates did it seem to weld reasonbly... all previous welding was only with CO2, which I have done well...

Argon is not a reactive gas like CO2 hence you don't have the dig factor, add just a small amount of CO2 and its a whole new game. I run 80/20 with 0.030" and go from short circuit to spray with just a turn of the dial. 80/20 is a great all around gas for me with wet out and penetration.

Hi I normally weld with gassless wire or pure CO2. I needed to do some aluminium welding so got some pure argon, worked OK. Back to steel now and because cylinder hire is expensive in Oz and I have a cheap supply of CO2 I am going to try mixing the gasses using a 'Y' tube connector just before the connection goes into the back of my MIG. Any thoughts? Also when should you use spray and when should you use short circuit Thanks in advance Ian

I won't claim to be a good welder, but for relatively thin materials I find the key to getting CO2 to work reasonably is a VERY short arc length. For thicker stuff it isn't quite as close, but I still end up running closer than I would with C25.

So im in my second year welding class and my classmates used to tell me that i run smaw too hot, like running 1/8" 7018 at 160-175amps (if im feeling frisky ive gone up to 210), my teacher says its fine, at what point does it become not fine to do and what do you think about welding hot and fast like this, either way i love the videos and learn more then i knew i could, thank you

Careful you don't start undercutting the weld bead when you're cooking like that, your welds will look better an be stronger when you're in the sweet spot which is just back of where you're playing now. Are you welding 1/4-3/8 plate, heavy pipe?
@Likkmymiddletoe
@Likkmymiddletoe 7 жыл бұрын
Mostly 3/8 plate, i rarely get undercut with it though it gets close sometimes, theyre not always the prettiest welds thats for sure, when welding that hot how much weaker does it really make your weld?
