AWS web site used to suggest and maybe still does 8 to 15 hours week of study for 1 year. When I went to seminar half the class was retaking the test and a bunch of guys hadn't even prepared. This exam is no joke. Best thing I ever did for my career. Should an inspector know how to weld? Hell yes. Buy the books, buy the work book's turn off your phone and get to work.

Took mine with Real Educational Services back on 2011, passed it first go round scored over 80 percent on all 3 parts, hands down best 2 week training you can get. I can also tell you they have several other classes that will help you become a well rounded CWI. After you get that card and stamp it's on you to really learn how to become a CWI.

I took mine in December of 2016. I passed all three sections on the first attempt. It was extremely tricky. The first step is going to a welding school for stick mig and tig of you haven't yet. 2nd step is getting a welding job. My advice is to go the aerospace route. Its top pay and your in a clean environment with air conditioning. Only saying that because working out side stick welding pipe or structural sucks ass bad... noone wants that hard life. So get your school and a job. Then maybe look into aerospace class or a company that hires entry level aerospace welders.
@geoffmooregm5 жыл бұрын
You don't have to be a welder. You can be a QA Tech, NDT Tech, Engineer etc.. As long as you're in the welding field. The girl next to me in class was PE from New York. She got sent by her company so she could inspect welds in new construction and repairs/upgrades to existing structures.

Real education is using the old code books for the studying as well. Why would they make you study a book you're not testing on? Im about to take the ten day class and am super worried coming into it from the 30day pre class material that is inaccurate.
@chrisingram97984 жыл бұрын
You’ve all missed the point entirely. The classes aren’t there to teach you how to pass the exams, they are there to help you become comfortable navigating through the information to be able to quickly find the information to pass the exams. The part B is a fake code book, you should be able to flip through it and spot the screwy information, those will be test questions. Pull out your vwac gauge and your six inch rule and fillet gauges, that’s all you need to measure the undercut, porosity and weld sizes during the exam.

AWS website states that with an Associates Degree in welding you need minimum 2 years of welding work experience. My question is if your second year of that welding degree was also your first year of welding work via an internship does that count as only needing one more year of work experience? Or is it two years of work after the date of receiving the Associates degree? Thanks for any insight, anyone!

I have a BS in ME. Did NDT for about 20 years. Taking the pre seminar online course. Half way thru. First, take it. Math will not be a problem. Your labs on breaking things are good. Your metallurgy classes and even strengths and materials are useful. Some of the rote memorization will be a pain. ME is a problem-solving degree, The course is 70 hr. I have found that it seems to take 2x of that. Good luck.
