Hank Jr I agree ! When I started welding a Missouri Drydocks back in the middle 70’s there where some guys that would show you a few tricks but most of the would not show me little tricks of the trade to help me get to journeyman and it took me years to get there so when I got there I began teaching the new guys as soon as they hired on and most all them became journeyman in about a year or more

So besides the arc welding machine and the ground lead all you need are a tig lead that is made to pass gas, as it were, and an argon cylinder with regulator?

Hello Bob ! I'm a 70 year old disabled Vietnam vet, and have been learning welding, so I don't have to send out my work as my son and I build cars. I truly appreciate your excellent instructional videos, and my welding has improved a lot faster than I expected it to, due to the help you, and some others have published. Myself, and I'm quite sure, the other veterans who watch your videos, enjoy and learn quite a bit from the wonderful help you provide. THANK YOU !

Thanks for the video Bob, to many people think they have to buy these very expensive welding machines to TIG weld and the reality is all they need is a buzz box, argon bottle and TIG torch. I weld off my gas drive all the time, its how I learned to weld years ago. you learn arc control very quickly when you have 200- 300 feet of welding cable drug out threw a paper mill, you cannot be running back and forth to the truck to adjust amperage when your welding Stainless pipe.

AC or AC/DC the younger generation will call them old fashioned transformer machines, down and dirty straight welding machines not an inverter machine. For AC on aluminum you can get a HF and your off and running. Simple and works great.

I learned how to weld with a Lincoln AC-225 back in high school. Did a bit of DC welding around the ranch with a Lincoln "Pipeliner" unit, but never really knew the difference since they both seemed to work the same for the steel pipe we were using for fencing. 20 or so years ago, I stumbled across an AC-225 on Craigslist and I've used it for a lot of things, including 200+ ft of steel picket fencing built from scratch in my backyard. There's some things that I really wish I had a TIG unit for. Is there anyway to adapt the AC-225 for TIG or must it be DC?

I must have had my old stick welder for at least 30 years and it was anything but new when I bought it. It's survived years of storage in a leaky shed and literally being stood on when it got in the way. I swear I could run a small truck over it and it would continue to work! It only goes up to 150 Amps, but that seems adequate for my needs. Several years ago I bought an almost identical TIG torch with a view to using it to TIG alongside stick, MIG and oxy/ace. I now have no excuse to delay - other than changing my Argoshield Lite (argon/CO2/O2 blend) for pure argon. Maybe have both? Thanks. You make it look so simple, but I think I'll find it isn't when I start; just as I did for the other methods of stitching two pieces of metal together.

Any tips for "tapering out " to prevent crators at every stop? All the vids I've seen says go up the side of the bevel before you snap out you don't always get a bevel to snap out of especially on the cover Pass.

Once you get to the end of your pass, try and angle the torch tip to the edge of the weld. Say you’re tig torch is at a 45* while welding, as you get to terminate the weld, angle it up and away. (Slowly) You’ll see the puddle diminish. Just try and guide it to the edge as it’s getting smaller. Hope this helps you out.

@WmSrite-pi8ck
@WmSrite-pi8ck 3 жыл бұрын
You won't need to repeat the training but you'll have to take a test here to make sure you know, understand and follow the rules, parameters and codes here. It might be different if you were a union welder or something like that trying to get a job in Canada. But a person from a country on a different continent, where they speak a different language and I'm assuming follow their own engineering standards and codes adapted to the local conditions there will need to prove they can do the same job as any other welder. I don't mean to suggest that you aren't capable of it but I doubt they have the same kinds of winter weather and wind speeds and building designs, just as a few examples of why you'd need to pass a test. If you actually know how to weld it's not something you need to worry about; really, I'd be more concerned with getting a visa and finding a place that can hire non-union trades. Just my two cents; your mileage may vary.

Hey Bob my name's Robert Thomas and I'm in the drilling industry, I've learned a lot from your videos and I wanted to say thank you for being detailed. I have a question everytime I weld with 6010 or any 60's I always blow key holes or bigger and I'm running miller trail blazer 325 diesel 1/8 in rod at 80 amps with arc control around 5 soft or at 0 so I don't have much heat at one time.
@jay90374
@jay90374 6 жыл бұрын
Robert - Sounds like maybe you are holding too long of an arc. You didn't say the metal thickness but a keyhole is a good thing, it shows you are getting full penetration. With proper preparation (bevel, land and gap) you can pretty much stuff the 6010 rod right into the gap and drag it along. Watch a pipeliner put in the root pass, you almost don't need a helmet because most of the arc is going through the keyhole into the pipe. You will need to turn up the arc force so it doesn't snuff out. IMHO

Can such a TIG torch be added to a Lincoln flux-wire/MIG welder (Weld-Pak 100HD)? I've read that flux-core wire and MIG welders are "constant voltage" whereas stick and TIG are "constant current". Since it's not constant current, can the 100HD do TIG? (Of course a gas supply will also have to be provided.) This machine allows swapping + and - leads and has option for argon gas (a tube connects to the wire feed block). Thanks for your help to all welders, "noobie" and pro.

I just stumbled into your channel and had to sub. I too weld but not for a living although I did run a sub arc with 5/32" wire and did my tacks with 1/8" 7018 (a tack used a whole rod) dog and wedge to line up the seams, we also did some seams with 1/4" 7024 drag rods. We made large pipes, I was there for 3 or 4 years and went back to truck driving. Before that, many years before that I was an auto mechanic and did a lot of gas welding on exhaust and such. I am very interested in learning TIG but don't want to buy expensive machines when I already have several welders now. Do you have a video of your camera setup? if so can you send me a link? if not can you do one. I have a few welding videos up here but don't have a good way to record them, you can take a peek and skim through some of mine if you have time and point out any concerns you may find, I have a playlist in my playlist group. I hope to hear back from you and hope you can help me fine tune my technique and my equipment. Thanks Bob.

To weld aluminum use 100% Argon, use copper to ball the tip of the tungsten electrode and to avoid contamination of the electrode always initiate the arc on copper placed next to the base aluminum to be welded. For copper a flattened 1" [or larger] hard copper tube coupling works well. At home I rarely weld thin aluminum, it's hard to justify spending $2K on an AC Tig welder. I also own a DC Mig with spool gun but it is best used on thick aluminum. Excellent informative video, thanks !

This might be s stupid question but regarding that setup in 01:39, how is the electricity traveling from that point by the "rubber tube" to the welding point? (1) does the gas carry the electricity or (2) is that brown "rubber tube" looking thing actually some king of special tube which allows electricity to travel through it? I admit that I know nothing about TIG welding and super little about STICK welding.

T12J7 The rubber tube has the electrical cable inside it. It runs the gas and power at the same time.

What voltage is TIG? I know it is DC but my machine is 14.5 to 21.5 volts , my amperage is 20 to 135. I love the idea of doing this and from another veteran thanks for your support. I plan to put dinse 25 connections on my electrode and my clamp so I can run dcep flux core. By the way I have a harbor freight titanium flux 125, it's weight helps me because of my disability I am not able to lift a lot of weight around for very long and it weighs 15lbs. And I got it 1for $125. I would love to make it into a simple TIG.

Hi, I have connected this as you have instructed but all i get is sticking and burning like an arc welder. However I don't have 100% I only have 75-25 will this make a difference in operation and cause this to stick and pop? I have been runnning at 120 amps and up to 130amps but it only gets more burning like an arc. Using a Lincoln 225 DC Arc welder

Hi Bob... Sorry for my post, i'm begginer with welding but this comment isn't about welding. I'm listeneng video on headset and if You could check "stereo effect" on Your voice in video... For me it is moving all the time left-right channel... i think you could fix that in video editor (even make mono). should be better for viewer like me (head set and non native english speaker). and of course - greate video! thank You

I dint know how to ask, but I'd sure like to build a system like you show. I have a stick welder which WAS AC, but I made a rectifier which makes it a DC output. I wonder where I might find more info on what to get so I can try building a TIG similar to what you show in this video. I see Amazon has VERY affordable torches. I have gauges and can get a tank of Argon. Perhaps my first question would be tip diameter and shape. Also, is the connector that screws onto the torch easy to buy at a welding shop? Your attitude and knowledge about welding really impress this old guy. Thanks for the info .

Hi Bob, being from Europe I’m wondering about your foot pedals, what’s up with that ? I’ve been following your channel for a while and looking around other welding folks as well, and I find that Americans tend to use the pedal more often than not. How come? Where I’m from it’s almost unknown......

Gramps was a welder blacksmith, dad was a universal welder blacksmith and i was shown at 15 yrs old, now what i will share with you is out there and you dont require gases or any expensive tig rods. first you need to purchase "everdure", 1rst get carbon rod, sharpen to point same as tig, clamp in your electrode holder, DC electrode pos, and use the eveture like any tig rod. hell i made my own short box by literally cutting 18 inches out of the box and frame, i used everdure, to weld the box back together, the rods are about $4-5 last time i bought.

I worked for a company that used a bunch of Thunderbolt welders as TIG welders for stainless . This is a shit way to to TIG weld. Do yourself a favor and invest in a portable Miller welder. They don't cost too much and you get much better welds. The tungsten will stick like a stick and you go through much more of it and it gets expensive quick.

So you can't do that with AC? Damn it.. I was hoping to convert a stick to TIG to be able to weld aluminum.. *sigh... guess I need to brush up on my gas welding skills and get a jeweler's torch for more control.

We used to fill a 5 gallon bucket with distilled water and drop a small submersible pump in to use a water cooled torch. We had an old acetylene hanger to shut off the gas. using a copper scratch pad was useful for avoiding marking up an expensive part (Tool & Die welding).

Thanks for sharing to the world of have a go welders. I have a question, I’m using a stick welder power unit and have a manual tig handset. I’m finding that the tungsten tip gets fouled continually and needs regrinding after seconds of welding. Is there a tip you can offer to avoid this and allow longer runs?

This just taught me I can get by with what I have, my Tig machine gave up the gas after about 15 yrs of just about daily working and it was old and I needed to buy a new one but needed other equipment!! Thanks again!!
