I just want to say, it was the honesty in this video about what the machine is and isn't good for, that really sold me on the 140. Too many manufacturers promise everything, whereas it's clear Forney is being straight up about where the machine shines, but also where it isn't suitable.

Absolutely appreciated the realistic assessment of the machine straight from the manufacturer. These guys seem to care about getting you into the correct machine for what you’re trying to get done with no runaround.

Love this very lucid, thorough but concise & simple to understand video narration (description). It didn't seem boastful or give me the feeling points were exaggerated in order to sell the product. In short , I believed the presentation. That said, I'm that guy. I'm the career carpenter that's been wanting to try my hand at metal projects around my farm and garage. I've spent a lot of time on KZbin researching beginner welders and feel this may be the product I've been looking for. (24 gauge to 1/4" metal welding) I'd like to try patching my truck panels as well as making carts and fixing on my angle iron trailer. Mr. Jason Mahugh was very thorough and touched upon most of the things I've been learning about in a way that was clear and brought light to any gaps in my understanding so far. However : Between MIG and Stick welding, he seemed to be saying there will be limits reached that either method will begin to struggle in preforming. It seems where one may struggle the other may have no problem. Eventually there won't be enough power (ark / heat) to preform or successfully weld beyond a certain thickness ? Or, being able to reach out far enough may become a problem. a) Which method is best for welding 1/4" steel or will either MIG or Stick complete that task equally successfully ?? b) Same question for lighter gauge metals like auto body sheet metal patches ?? c) Welding 3 to 8 min. before allowing the machine to cool down for 2 min. seems fine per weld, but, can you do this for a project which may need 10 or 15 of these welds ?? d) Will accessories like longer electrode holder leads or MIG gun leads be available ?? Is it possible you have a video on which method is best for different thicknesses or "rule of thumb" recommendations ?? Maybe a guideline list that accompanies the product. Finally, if the unit's leads are not long enough to reach all areas of the project w/out sacrificing power due to having to use extension cords, is there a machine you offer and can recommend that is more suited for reaching out further by way of 25' to 50' extension ?? Thank you for your generous consideration, Sincerely ................................ Steph (Stephen Boeker) Leesville, Louisiana

A) ¼” is the top end of this machine capabilities in every process of welding. In MIG we would recommend using .030, starting the machine turned up to 8 (Voltage) and 10 (WFS) then dialing it in to what welds nice from there. In stick we recommend using a 1/8” electrode of E6013 or E7014 with the machine turned up to 10. In both circumstances it might be necessary to bevel the work piece to insure complete penetration. B) For lighter material we would recommend using the MIG process as stick is very difficult on thin material. We would still recommend .030 wire (.030 wire is the best wire to run in this machine for all work piece thicknesses). As a rule of thumb I keep my WFS about two above my voltage with this machine and this use is no different, I would recommend 1 (Voltage) and 3 (WFS) and again dial it in from there to what welds nice for you. C) It is rare to reach this machine's duty cycle, though it is possible. Generally the time it takes you to set up your next weld is enough time for the machine to cool down and keep you from hitting duty cycle. D) Unfortunately there are not longer leads for this machine. With the MIG gun you can only push the wire so far without significantly loosing speed which limits the length of the gun to the size that is sold with this unit. With the electrode holder for stick, the loss of voltage over distance is gets significantly greater the further it must travel, also limiting the length of the lead to the size of the one sold with this machine. It is possible to use this unit with an extension cord - it must be 12 gauge or larger up to 25’ to allow the machine its full range of use. Additionally, the Forney 220 MP comes with larger 15’ leads and allows up to ½” of welding potential. This unit is also able to work on an extension cord that is 8 gauge or larger up to 25’ to allow the machine its full range of use. Hope this answers your questions! If you have any more you can always reach out to our Expert-Techs and they'd be more than happy to help. You can reach them at 1-800-521-6038 ext. 2

I have this machine. It absolutely runs .035 great. .030 with the voltage anything past 7 im getting globular transfer... .035 is needed to take advantage of the amps this machine can make. Im also using 100% co2 which runs hotter. Maybe why im having great luck with .035. I have arc welded for extended periods of time at max settings and yet to trigger the overload. I have other 250amp mig machines and im impressed how well this little forney 140mp is doing being 120v.

I bought one 2 years ago and haven't used it as I didn't have a garage and only bought it to upgrade my joke of a 30yr old century. We just built a 32x48 garage working on running power now but can't wait to start playing around with it. I know it will be leaps and bounds better then what I have been using. The metal feed mechanism was a nice selling point and I really couldn't find any bad reviews.

Very informative video, I just got this machine this past weekend as a gift. I just set it up for flux core welding tonight. I was confused about the polarity for flux core wire as the manual shows positive polarity and the quick guide shows negative polarity. I choose to watch this video hoping to find the correct answer, and I did as well as I learned quite a bit about this machine that I didn't see in the manual. I can hardly wait to use this machine this weekend, thank you for your clear description of what this machine is for as well as what it is not for.

Just bought one of these and you folks may want to update your thick owners manual. The thick owners manual has the solid wire and flux core wire pictures set up wrong (for the polarity jumper cable) on page 16. The quick setup cardboard is set up correctly though, exactly like you have set it up in this video.

Even though the machine doesn't have a full complement of TIG functions, I wish you would have at least touched on TIG setup for it since it's got the TIG function. I tuned in specifically to learn about setting this machine up with a TIG torch and was disappointed to have learned nothing about 1 of the three functions of the machine in this video. Maybe some recommended torches for this machines ability.

I have a question I have the Forney140 MP model 270. The metal shaft that the wing nut goes on is very loose( moves up, down,sideways ) Is that normal? it's been like that since I got it. The tube that the spool goes on is solid doesn't move..
@forneyind
@forneyind 3 жыл бұрын
It is normal for the inner shaft to have play and move around. Once it is tightened with he spring and wing nuts it will not longer move.

Does this welder come with flux core specific nozzles? My understanding is that the MIG nozzles are larger to keep gas trapped, whereas flux core nozzles don't require that feature. Entirely new to welding, and just trying to make sure I know what I need before I make the purchase.
@forneyind
@forneyind 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, you are correct that the MIG nozzle is used to keep gas trapped. We don't have flux-core specific nozzles on our machines, but we find that the MIG nozzles help to keep the proper stick out when welding. The nozzle can be removed if you don't want it on there though.

Hi there, with this machine Stick welding is electrode positive. Thanks for reaching out!
@Chilllybob
@Chilllybob 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can. You can run both polarities I have the machine I've done it. It depends on what the electrode calls for. You can run DCEP and DCEN. some electrodes suggest DCEN. It says in the instruction manual set the polarity according to the stick recommendation. Keep in mind this is a DC only machine.

I wonder why we are talking of 140 Amps in the specs... And you are saying that in MIG mode, it will go up 100 AMP; could you be more precise? Thanks.
@forneyind
@forneyind 3 жыл бұрын
The Forney Easy Weld 140 MP in MIG mode can produce up to 140A although this is unusual. With maximum wire feed and voltage with .030 wire, you will see amperages in the 120-140A range.

I got one given to me 3 years ago and I haven't used it because I don't know how to set it up and I don't have the outlet for it and I'm not about to pay an electrician to come out here and set up an outlet just for the welder. That's something that's not advertised is the fact that you can't just take it and plug it in and use it you have to have a special outlet dedicated for high voltage which if somebody's going to go have that installed why not just use that money to get an actual welder with a generator it's going to end up about the same price after you hire an electrician to come retrofit your house

Hi, the Forney Easy Weld 140MP (ITEM# 271) comes with a 120V, 30A plug that fits a NEMA 5-20. However, it also comes with an adapter preinstalled to the power cord that adapts it to fit a standard home 120V outlet (NEMA 5-15). We recommend using this unit on a 30A breaker, as the units maximum amperage draw is 25A. This maximum draw is only when the unit initiates the arcs, with both the wire feed speed and voltage set to max. After the arc initiates the running amperage draw falls to 13.7A. However, with an adjustment to lower settings it is fully capable to run this unit off the standard household power. It is not recommended to use this use on a GFCI protected circuit, as the GFCI will likely trip often during use.
