Absolutely beautiful! As for the stick, mig, tig. When you have 3 hammers and one nail, sometimes you just pick up the tool you feel like using at the time and it's fine to not have a technical justification for the one chosen over the two not. ;) When I was a professional welder (my first of 9 lives), I'd often stick weld or tig something just because I didn't feel like using the "squirt gun" on it 😎
@myronjohnson88998 жыл бұрын
I never thought of it that way but it does explain why I have so many everlast welders in my possession! As for this art work it is fantastic. I have seen a few different "iron horses" but this one really captures the beauty of a horse without gobs and gobs of little pieces welded together. Absolutely beautiful in its minimal number of parts.
@joshuadelisle8 жыл бұрын
Thank you! ideally I would have used TIG for is tiny bead and quick cleanup but would take far longer to weld, MIG would be fast but I didn't have any gas at the time and it shows up more when ground back and galvanized. Stick produces a good weld and is very conveinient but have to do alot of clean up. All have their ups and downs, I choose what ever is right f or the job at the time.

You asked at the end of the video what I think. I think it looks nice. Because of the simple lines, it has a contemporary art deco flavor. If I could offer a suggestion, fill in the eyes and nostrils (and neck base if it is open.) This will give the piece a more substantial feel. This gives me the impression that you are a welder that does art rather than an artist that welds.
@joshuadelisle7 жыл бұрын
Thank you.Your not the first to say that about the eyes and so I will strongly considder that suggestion. I try to master the techniques I use for my Art, I did gas pipe welding for a short while, that really upt my welding skills! i'm currently welding hydroulic tanks for a company, so the welds need to be spot on. but I would defifinately say I'm creative type at heart.....

@joshuadelisle8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Geoffroy! yup thats right 3mm laser cut steel. its more a coating than a patina so won't harm the galve at all. its a bit experimental so I don't know for sure how long it will stay that colour in the open but I simply say that it will 'weather' over time.. forming it is the simple part, its the design of the paterns that was the challenge...

absolutely beautiful! i have a question aswell, why do you use a stick welder instead of using MIG or is it just as simple as you dont have a MIG welder?
@joshuadelisle8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ned! stick leaves much less of a mark when galvanized, this is partly because it cools less quickly and isn't as hard as mig which means that it etches differently in the acid bath. also mig has a copper coating on the wire that alloys into the weld and attracts more zinc. if done right stick is a better weld than mig which is why most pipe regulations insist that pipe work is stick welded and not mig welded,this needed lots of strength so it wouldn't split weld put in molten zinc at 650Deg C. tig would leave much less to finish but takes much longer. I have considered using mig to make this piece as it is the fastest welding technique but it would require me to normalise the ground weld after to keep it hidden after galvanizing.

aah, that makes alot more sense to me now! thanks!

i could make you a thousand of them , easily ,,, but id trade that technical ability, to have the artistic vision to make the first one.

Thanks Tom. I hope to one day sometime soon have the time to make video on my methods of design, they help me to realise the concept idea and then develop that into a technical design that can be used to fabricate the final piece. it is true that many practical people don't necessarily have the creativity to come up with ideas/concepts but I think its mainly because those peoples brains don't see from the perspetive of a naturaly creative persons. I recon my methods or system will help non creative people generate ideas using a simple format or path/journey into coming up with creative ideas of their own. I know though that other creatives have their own routes to coming up with ideas and maybe my method is easy to me but complex to others, I'm hoping to do an artists residency in the US next year to focus on it. what do you think?

The whole peiece is laser cut with a design I have on a DXF format. I ordered enough parts to make 4 heads. I can prnt them out on paper and then cut them my self. out of interest how much is a design worth to you? my only concern is coppy right if I started doing that....

Not a bad idea. Which breed?

@@joshuadelisle id been thinking about that ,,,, lab springs to mind , as a general all rounder ,, but alsatian or spaniel would be a close second and third ,,, from a sales point of view , and allowing for better sales to general customers , id go lab ,,,, easier ears too

Thats a good Idea! I'll be making a rams skull and a Puma next, maybe a bull after but will give a thought to doing a Lab or springer after. cheers J
