Welding Project for Beginners: Metal Shop Box

In this video I came up with a simple and fun project for the beginning welder like me, to practice welding. We'll be using Mig welding to make a basic Metal Box with a locking latch.We'll be practicing tack welds , horizontal and vertical welds a long with your basic push and pull welds.
Once we cut all the parts out on the horizontal bandsaw. We'll use some 90 degree magnets to help line the parts up to tack weld the box together. After we get the Box all tacked up , we'll lay down the finish welds. Using an angle grinder to smooth out all the welds to make it look like it's one solid piece. Now that the body is finished we'll concentrate on the hinged top, We'll cut the top to fit nice and use a bolt and 4 nut to make the hinge. We'll weld the two outside nuts to the back and the two inside nuts to the top. Allowing the top to open and close on the bolt nicely. Then we'll make a locking latch with a bolt and two nuts and make a slotted piece of metal with a bent nail.
Remember I'm a beginner at welding too, so this not a how to weld video but more a fun project to help you practice welding while building something fun. Because the more you weld the better you'll get.So my box is roughly 4” deep x 8” wide x 4” tall. The bolt I used was 3/8 x 4” for the hinge . But get creative and make whatever you want or work with the material you may have on hand. Someone gave a good suggestion and said to cut a chain link in half for the lock hook instead of a bent nail. It's made with just mild steel.

Man great video, can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this. I’m a software engineer but have always also made stuff. Just now really taking the plunge to convert the garage to more of a metal shop and am getting in to small projects. That's a good little project for anyone new to welding to start with, and little boxes are always handy to have. So, make your first one, put the date on the bottom, then some time later, when you need another, make it and put the date on it, and so on. That way you'll be able to see as time goes on how you improve.

A tip to improving your grinding also; try to keep the disc as flat/parallel to the surface as possible. It will help reduce "dig ins" to the surface of the material, and give a level finish. Flap discs for polishing, hard stone for material removal, and cut off wheels for cutting. Don't mix up their uses, and you won't break any discs. 👍 Merry Christmas Stay safe

For all of those welds, since they are non structural welds. Run them all downhill and it will save some time grinding. Also for thicker material like you used here if the tacks are good and strong you can run a grinder down the seam and create a nice “v” groove for the weld to sit in as your welding. This will help with penetration and keep the overall profile shorter...which in turn will result in less grinding. Good work

Very neat project and great for a beginner. My recommendations for improving the box as it is right now would be to add a loop handle on top or angle iron handles on the sides. As it is right now, its probably fairly slippery due to the weight and smoothness of the steel surface. A handle on top would also allow you to pick it up with one hand rather than two. Also, putting on some paint to protect the box from rust is advisable. For slightly more advanced welding and prepping work.. While your's is definitely adequate, having welds on the outside to hold the lock loop in place serves no real practical purpose and might appear as aesthetically displeasing. Its better to drill two holes, countersink the hole and weld them on the inside to get the welds deeper into the plate and more weld contact with the loop itself. Then you can you grind the surface flat without having to worry about grinding away the welds since a lot of the weld is below the surface level. Preferably this should be done before the rest of the box is assembled. The latch can then be measured to fit the loop rather than the loop measured to fit the latch. For a pointlessly advanced box, grind 45 degree bevels for one side of the welding joints to make a half-V groove that you can then fill up. Because the penetration of GMAW/MAG is not that spectacular, especially on plates that are above 1/4 inch, having a groove to fill up allows you to put down more weld below the surface level and a proficient welder can even make a root pass that removes all the gaps on the inside that will undoubtedly be filled with up grime and dust over time which might not make the box the best place to store anything you want to keep clean. Of course even a bevel just 1/16 to 1/8 inch deep allows you grind away the crowning without having to worry about compromising the integrity of the weld since you'll always know that there's at least that much weld below the surface.

Also welding up the corners I found it best to not have everything flush right of the beginning. It’s kinda hard to explain but you want your weld to fill in the corner. You only want a small amount of the metal to overlap when doing corners and you will fill in the rest. This way you get maximum coverage and good penetration on both pieces of metal. Hope this helps somebody out.

I agree on most of it as well as making a deeper welding to make it stronger. Still i wonder what could be use for it.... Its too small and too heavy do be practical. I think that more of a skill can be developed using a tinner sheets up to 3mm. Since there is often mistake of burning trough material. Other thing hinges are too complicated you can buy them cheap or even produce them with pipes and some round iron bar. Now i got KZUBR inverter/co2 welder that i brought for 250€ and invested same amount for a co2 gas container witch is a fire extinguisher basicly. Have no special tools to work with but grinder welder and my hands and yes one big ass hand held grinder ( witch i use when i beed to cut something deeper than the small one can reach) xD

great idea. gonna incorporate this into my high school welding class. i prefer to line up metal not flush, or at least bevel the edge.i like to split the thickness of the metal, so after you weld/grind, theres still some strength after you grind. hope that makes sense. again, great job.

I always love these "For beginners" videos. Beginners do not have high end tools and cutting machinery with a giant well spaced workshop. These beginner videos should be filmed using standard affordable tools in a typical environment that your average person can use and afford. That would be a true test of skill not just on crafting the item but also for making instructional beginner videos. Not saying your not skilled, just that half of the battle would be lost when you start flashing all of these specialised pieces of equipment in your videos to your average person starting out.

Excellent little project! I like it. Did you paint or powder coat this box? You could cut away the center of the hinge rod, and move the inner nuts closer to the outer ones, weld the ends of the hinge screws and grind flat. I'd probably use a couple of door hinges. Also, maybe some tapped holes in the bottom for rubber feet, and drawer handles on the sides. Also, your nail is the weak link. :)

Good project, when your welding downhill point the gun upwards (you’re holding about a 90 try and shoot for a 45 unless you change settings. definitely not the worst welding. Watch the puddle, to make that slot on the latch you could also drill several holes and either file it out use a smaller die grinder or dermal tool. That will eliminate welding the slit closed. welder +5 years

I would build this but I cannot buy steel at a reasonable price anywhere so I mostly build with salvaged materials as well as new rebar, pipe and concrete stakes (flat ones). When I need plate I weld together 2" x 36" flat concrete stakes ($5 each).

Question! I use cutting fluid when drilling and taping holes, seeing you use it with a band saw I have to ask what are the drive wheels made of on your saw? on Porta band saws that use a rubber or synthetic compound to drive the blade it is not recommended to use a cutting fluid as this may attack and degrade the drive wheels. just asking! one of my projects is to make horizontal band saw out of a cheap portable saw. and this maybe something other may want to do.

First off thanks for watching. Here are the dimensions of the box I made and of course you can make it any size you would like…. I just so happen to have 1/8” x 4” stock on hand. So my box is roughly 4” deep x 8” wide x 4” tall. The bolt I used was 3/8 x 4” for the hinge . But get creative and make whatever you want or work with the material you may have on hand. Someone gave a good suggestion and said to cut a chain link in half for the lock hook instead of a nail. Have Fun!

Nice box man, but put a guard on that grinder!.. that's some scary stuff. I used a grinder without a guard one time and never again. I had a flap disk on and it touched my knuckle for a fraction of a second and it sailed right through my glove and down to the bone, and that's just a flap disk... Be careful bud

Thanks !!! The Box is made with 1/8" thick metal, it's 8"Lx 4"W x 4 1/4" high. The hinge in the back is 5/16 bolt 4' long and the front is 1/4" bolt 1 3/4"long with w latch 2 1/4"x 1". Email me if you have anymore questions [e-mail] Have fun and be safe...

What gauge steel is that and which welder do you use?

I'm not necessarily new to welding ive been doing it for about 2 years and I'm not a professional or anything I was just wondering/ thinking it seems like your burning the material im not trying to be rude or anything because I know I still make big mistakes also but I just wanted to point it out if there is a different reason please tell me. The finished dimensions of the box are 8"Lx 4"w x 4 1/2 h with 1/8" thick. The front clasp plate is 1 1/8" x2" x 3/32 thick with a 1/4" bolt and nuts about 1 7/8" long. Back hinge is 3/8" bolt with nuts and 4"long. But you can do whatever you want with the dimensions. This is just what I came up with...have fun!!
