After 40 years using every variation of weld hood, my last 10 years I use a PAPR style self darkening lens hood. I think ever young welder should spent their 1st paycheck on a PAPR hood!

Very expensive, but so worth it. I would personally consider the PAPR second, there’s aftermarket additions online that are almost drop in. A good helmet, one that works with your personal issues (for me it’s astigmatism), is the first thing I’d run towards.

Optrel has to be the most comfortable mask I've ever had, definitely recommend if you are wearing for long periods of time.

I like the pancake. I started with a jackson insight, and it kept darkening when i didn't want it to darken from sunlight coming in. Autodark 11.

Sensitivity was way too high. I always turn sensitivity all the way down, otherwise it darkens for about everything

I have a few helmets , auto darkning with different internal optic lenses , other flip lenses , but all with back hood velco attachment and front , keeps all sunlight or reflections out.. But ideal be the motor cycle helmet and air pipe with built in filtration attachment. Saves your lungs

I’d start my journey with a traditional, fixed shade, get used to learning by feel and memory, then bump into an inexpensive auto dark. For auto dark, I strongly recommend K T industries. They’re reliable, fairly comfortable, and above all else, they’re about as inexpensive as it gets. While working, if someone you work with is using a 3m, Lincoln, miller, or whatever, see if you can borrow it for a quick weld and see if it’s up your alley. Edit: strongly recommend either leather, or fire resistant fabric fixed all around the helmet. Top- back of the helmet to block rear light, bottom front to protect your neck from light burns!

I strongly reccomend for those people who grind and torch a lot, get a face shield shaded lens. A little grinding or cutting without a shade is fine, but those longer sessions give me headaches. I worked throught trades school as a torch cutter in scrap yard, and used the crap outta those lenses.

When you’re saying fixed shade your talking about passive v auto not adjustable lens shade, correct?

I have two main welding hoods. One works well with Mig, Arc, DC tig and another one for AC Tig. For some reason the low voltage AC Tig won't trigger the other helmet.

I’ve had quite a few of the big brands over the years. Each excels in certain welding processes. Not so good in others. After 23 years, my face is sensitive to welding light. Not 1 can filter out allllll the different light spectrums. The brand I’ve found to be very efficient (for me), in Tig,Stick,MiG,FCAW, has been Optrel 2.0 .Yes they are expensive. But very versatile.
