Hey "A" Man, as my southern friends say "thats pertnear perfect". I've been in construction over 30yrs, and I always look to see who does the job better than me, then try it that way (for any job). 1st rule to welding, "get comfortable". Hood down lights on.

For several years I mitered 8 and 12 inch pipe with 45s. Torch followed with grinder to make it look saw cut. I have pipe patterns that look like an eyeball. I'm sure you have seen them. The short side had to be offset about 3 eighths to get them to a true 45. I made copies of the patterns with artist mat board a heavy paper almost cardboard so I didn't damage the originals. Patterns are a lifesaver when facing hundreds or thousands of cuts.

Austin, I learned when welding handrailing from schedule 40 pipe that the"clearcoat" had to be ground back from the weld joint. The handrail had a better ground and the coating didn't cause porosity. Al B in Ohio.

Id say it probably burns off when he uses the torch as far as cleaning the weld joints but im not 100% never used
@sallybrokaw61243 жыл бұрын
Torch yes, it would burn a wider area. However, a chop saw or plasma not so much. Mig welding does not like "dirty" metal.

Any tips for how you get a close end to end measurement on your odd angle cope - 90 deg saddle? That tiny pup at the end was really impressive!
@jimwardlow78302 жыл бұрын
I would like to suggest that you could use some flat stock bent to a 90deg and clamped to your rectangular straight edge to line up your cross members rather than eye baling, much faster and more accurate for me. (3" X 8" for example)

Nice, strong gate. Have you compared plasma cutting costs including consumables against the cost of oxy and actyl gas. You cut extremely well with oxy/actyl but not everyone does.

Never fails; the bloody wire pops out right after you let go of the piece and lift your lid lol. Try a more aggressive whip action with the flick of the wrist and more often then not the wire will unstick from the tip. Of course if you really gob one on, no flick of the wrist will save you lol
@eldongarner15193 жыл бұрын
Austin , remember the 3,4,5 measuring when checking for square. This will work for multiples of 3 which would be 6 and 4 = 8 and 5 = 10 and so on. Your channel and how you explain your procedure is great. You might include your electrode size and amperage. Thanks a lot. Happy Thanksgiving. I hope your day was good.
@davidhick43033 жыл бұрын
no eloectrode or amperage setting is in this video because he is using a MIG. Wire size, voltage and wire speed would be more relevant; regardless, this video is about fabbing not welding.
@TheWascallyWelder.13 жыл бұрын
By the way Aaron, I always hate it when that happens go to tack something together then the wire burns back into the tip. Such a hassle! It's to bad you don't always make your gates exactly the same length, height, and width. Because if you did then you could just build yourself a standardised pipe gate fixture and never have to fuss with levelling the pipe stands anymore. Especially if you put legs and feet on it to make it into a fixture table.

That looks so good, but I have an amateur question: could that be built with the horizontals first then piece in the diagonal? Fewer cuts, and 3 of the pieces should be identical... would it be as strong? It would look different and I know you have a good eye for aesthetics...

It definitely could be built that way. It crossed my mind. I decided against it simply because of the look of the diagonal piece being all one piece.
