Welding Table Fabrication

Fabricating a small welding table with slats. Why slats? Since my workshop is quite small there's a finite amount of tools I can fit in it. Getting more tools in the form of special welding table with special clamps requires more space. With this slat type welding table I can use my pre-existing clamps that fit through the slats so I can clamp down anything I like anywhere on the table and still use the same clamps regularly as well. And they don't take any extra room. And also - I needed it for a project and definitely use it for my future projects as well. Small projects but important nevertheless. :) This table was made out of recycled scrap steel with an exception of two 50x50x3mm square tubes under the table slats.

Nice unit. Using cold saw without safety glasses isn't smart or a good example. Fireball Tool built a welding table with many innovative features. It is worth checking out. It is dead flat.

Very nice table. One idea - you can make extending ends using a square profile that fits inside existing long tubes if you need longer support for welding big things.

6:25 you put the but on the wrong side, now the weld is holding 100% of the tables weight, instead of just resisting rotating (which these nuts never experience)

I'm suspicious that you have a bunch of scraps nicely punched...

This scrap is from a local steel shop, they produce tilting containers. These punched holes are the rails the containers "walk" on while tilting to keep the container moving from side to side. I would've preferred square tubing instead of these since I don't use the holes at all. If anything, they're unnecessary for my application. No need to be suspicious. 😉

I love your builds. I hate to be the harbinger of doom, but I'll bet you in one year the welding table top will be warped. I've built 4 of these. All of them heat warped. I'm to the point that I want to pump and cycle cold water through the table to prevent warpage. I think the only way is about 1&1/2 (38 mm) inch thick cold rolled steel for the top Also, as a fun fact every table I made I painted it red like yours.

I was afraid of this thing getting warped. However, I needed it fast for my buddy's CNC router table and it did the job. I'd like to build one from CNC laser cut parts cut from sheet steel.
