Thin 4130 chromoly tubing can be welded without a preheat as long is its .120" or below in wall thickness.
This chunk of 4130 absolutely needs a preheat of around 500F.
4130 is a hardenable low alloy steel and can have hard and brittle zones if allowed to cool quickly.
Preheat slows the cooling rate and by using a preheat as well as er70s2 filler rod, a ductile weld can be made.
Sometimes 4130 chromoly is welded with matching 4130 filler rod when it is heat treated to full strength after welding.
In this case, the part was stress relieved in a furnace after welding and was not required to be strengthened by heat treatment.

You remind me of my welding instructor Victor Garcia. Not a social media star or well known name but a man of pure worth and dedication to this craft. Completely forthcoming with any and all knowledge, never agitated or even.. He volunteered to start a welding program at Washington State penitentiary. Tall order!!. A decade later and he's literally changed 100's of lives and dramatically shifted the future of society's wellbeing. I've got nothing but love and respect for people to go the extra mile and give without expectations. It's a beautiful thing I enjoy practicing every chance I get.. I learned from the best in the worst place!!. Thank you Jody.. you helped get me a job I really wanted and deserved.. nerves kick my backside so I used your video for repetition and visioning..!!

A few weeks ago, my machinist friend brought 2 parts for me to weld. I already posted the first part where I used a 2 pass weld to achieve the leg size specified on the drawing. For this part, I used a somewhat different technique.

Since this technique works for this crack sensitive alloy, I'm assuming you could use this for a medium carbon steel?

@ronjackson1416
@ronjackson1416 4 жыл бұрын
Laywire technique produce great looking welds, but, not the best technique for welders just starting tig welding , because of the possibility of lack of fusion. The only way to determine if you are having lack of fusion, or cold lap is to X-ray, or cut and etch the weld samples.

Hey Jody, thanks for the videos, you're a huge inspiration, I literally started my career as a welder thanks to your channel. Ok, so here's my question. When you get given weld specs(I.e fillet size etc) how do you know when you can do multiple passes to achieve the fillet size? I've been reading up on welding theory and came across some information on minimum fillet weld sizes for a given thickness/range of thicknesses. Do you do any math work(I.e figuring out what minimum size fillet for your first pass) or do you just go off of instinct?

So I got a job at a train yard and j never used a welder. They said fine I can learn. 3 days in I love it and could easily weld flat. The problem is I have to weld overhead horizontal and vertical with one pass on two plates. The steel had to break not the weld when they bend it I can never get a clean weld that has the heat pass through and it digs pretty bad on the overhead. We use Miller arc and a wirespeec of 4 and heat 24

Just curious, is there any reason you didn't go with something like ER80S-D2 for this weld? I use it for welds like this and it's fantastic, but I do not claim to be an expert (or even close to it). Your wisdom is appreciated.

sometimes I do that. switch directions to even out stress. But wasnt really worried about this part because it was going to stress relief heat treatment after welding. distortion was not an issue either since the overall dimensions of the part was at least .050" oversize for final machining
