Inspector here and it’s safe to say your welding is acceptable under any code I’ve inspected to my friend. Great video, especially the close ups on the arc

Thanks for the help. I just passed a welding test at my job. Out of the ten people that tested the welding test administrator said you did the best. A direct result of your help. I watched the videos and then went out to my garage and practiced.
@weldingtipsandtricks11 жыл бұрын
I have never heard of any rule in the code on how many stops you can have. Bottom line is that It all depends on who is administering the test. Some testers impose their own preferences and you have to live with it.
@phendrix94763 жыл бұрын
Neither have I but it’s generally understood that the less you have, the less chance you’ll have a related discontinuity and/or defect. There are codes that da** near allow an old PBR can and a dead cat if it’s a small enough % of the circumference. Haha

So, 'suck back' would produce a blob of metal on the back of the weld, inside the pipe?

I have a question about welding.i would like to know what kind of math is encountered for all types of welding. I would like to make a career out of it but its just that lack of confidence ive got towards math.im smart but math has never been my strong suit.i have a bit of experience on mig but i would like to take myself to the next level and take welding courses. I just wanted some advice on what i should expect.thank you. Your videos are very helpfull and educational.

Hi Jody. Just want to ask if you know how to tig weld a mismatch on pipe fit up? On my knowledge if a pipe has a mismatch or it has a hi-lo, it wont pass an xray. So as you said its not a perfect world out there. There are flaws in pipe fit-up. What is the remedy. Thanks man.

I know this comment was made 3 weeks ago, but since nobody has answered I will: I am currently working in a machine shop as a welder and training under an instructor who was a welder for more than 20 years. You will rarely need more than basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. You will need to be able to convert fraction-decimal and vice versa. You will need to be able to use a measuring tape, steel rule, and combination square. There is no algebra. Hope this helps.

Can you do one where you're feeding the rod on the inside/torch on the outside. I believe the gap was 5/32" or 3/16" (?). Grandpa Bill

I'm guessing why its called a hot pass is because the pipe or metal is already hot or warm.

What about porosity on the weld inside the tube? Don't one need Argon in the tube to prevent it? And by the way, I really appreciate your effort. //Nico

terion00 Youre better off practicing both methods tbh, otherwise if your ever in a situation with other parts in the way and you cant walk it, youre gonna really struggle. Plus when it comes to filling it out and capping off, some inspectors will knock it back for weaving

Walk the cup! Take a basic tig torch like profax wp19, set it up w/ a collet, cup, and tungsten. Put on a pair of Tillman tig gloves and practice 'dry runs'. You can do this on a table, school desk, practice pipe coupon, etc. Just do it in your free time (or all the time!), in a few weeks you will achieve 'muscle memory'. In martial arts this is like 'wax on, wax off' and 'sand the floor' (from Karate Kid). You'll just do this automatically without even thinking about it. When you get to this point your stress level will drop and the nerves of having a weld inspector looking over your shoulder in test mode will just vanish! Good luck.

This is really a general question for TIG welding. When I'm welding I always floor my pedal. Is this something you do as well? I hear my other classmates saying they floor it at first and then back off the pedal. Personally I have no troubles while I'm flooring. I run 100. Currently I'm doing carbon steel plate. Next month I'll begin my pipe class. And any recommendations for stainless or aluminum?
@HotLikeButta8 жыл бұрын
If your just flooring the pedal you might as well just take the pedal off and get a switch or do scratch start. The point of the pedal is amerage control, which you're not really taking advantage of by just flooring it. As far as stainless you want to get in, puddle, and move out as fast possible otherwise you'll burn and distort it. Good argon coverage is essential so a gas lens isnt a bad investment. Stainless only takes about 2/3 the heat of carbon. Aluminum likes to be welded hot and fast, keep your AC balance set to where you have an etch zone about 1/16 inch wider than your puddle on each side. Watch your arc length because it doesn't take much to dip your tungsten with aluminum then things go south real fast.

It's because of the higher amperage

Why don't you show a 5/32 gap with walking the cup on the root, I asked my teachers about your method and not one of them said it was a good idea! Mainly bc your not forsure fusing the edges every time compared to walking from one bevel to the other and keeping the filler on the inside of the pipe to get nice reinforcement like you! Plz demo this! Thanks
@krs17328 жыл бұрын
he cant demo that because he uses a different technique.
@marktitus65988 жыл бұрын
Pipe welding for 30 yrs and RARELY if ever will you see a 5/32 gap. Most places don't want you going beyond 1/8 gap for several reasons...1. Simply takes longer to put more weld metal in. 2.Cap width can turn out to be too wide.
@krs17328 жыл бұрын
Mark Titus if u use a 1/8 gap, do you use a 1/8 filler rod too? here in houston, nearly everyone uses 5/32" to even 3/16" gap.
@marktitus65988 жыл бұрын
1/8 gap. 1/8 filler rod.

It is easy to weld cover passes TIG, though there is no really usefull videos on how to stainless steel stick weld cover passes on pipe: that is what you actually need to pass the test, no one asks you to TIG weld cover passes, TIG is required only for root...
