The government has handed out money like it is a treat/candy! There are hard working people who need assistance and get denied. I once knew a single mom of 3 that I worked with. She worked hard everyday and even did overtime, but that still wasn't enough to pay her power bill in the winter. One day she broke down and shared this with coworkers. She was so ashamed. She applied for assistance and they said she made too much money to get it...she needed to make less money. They reward people for working less!!! They also give more assistance to people that are not from America. People can even use their EBT cards to buy Starbucks coffee and they use other peoples card to do it! How can one person have 2 EBT cards???
@debbiedrey3482

@@shari1442 yes!!! People can go into any fast food restsurant, any gas station/conveince store, to purchase with EBT. Total junk , total empty calories! And hard working people who need temporary food assistance, are turned down!!

Shari, using EBT at Starbucks is very wrong on so many levels!

I don't know any starbucks that except EBT and if they are they will get fined. No hot food or drinks or premade dinners can be purchased with EBT. 2 EBT cards is against the law and will land a person a felony. I don't know how they are getting that. Sounds like they are lying about something but it will catch up to them. When applying for food stamps there is a lengthy application and the state does a background check and if a person is a felon they can not get assistance. They ask if a person is getting benefits in another state so if they say no and it turns out a lie it will catch up to them sooner or later. These people that take advantage makes it bad for those that don't. I was denied once when I became a single Mom after my divorce and was told I made to much which was just a few dollars over.

EBT is an important topic! When we lived in Michigan, (2016-2019) I supervised group homes and apartment settings for Developmentally disabled adults. I had one client who had their own apartment, lived semi- independently, and received EBT benefits, ( very appropriately so as she was unable to work. ) This client would spend 70 or 80 dollars per week on cakes, donuts, candy, chips, and sugary sodas. I talked to the social workers at the funding source agencies. I was told a recipient can use the EBT for any approved purchases-- including sugary drinks and food. We tried to gently counsel the client, had her doctors speak with her etc., offer to go shopping with her, etc. Much more to the story, but this clients' health suffered greatly. Glad to see there will be changes!!! Long overdue!!! Agree with all your points!!!

Hi Gina! As a young mother , there was a time I had food stamps . Even when I had them , I would BUDGET!! I would make those stamps stretch. One thing I would NEVER do is lie. For those individuals 60 and older, that qualifies, there are the FDA monthly food boxes which provides healthy foods. Good supplemental help for those who can't afford to buy many groceries. Hopefully this program will continue and not be cut. Regarding EBT there will always be those who know how to work any system. The ones I worry about are the ones who actually need help. The ones who take advantage ruin it for those who are actually trying hard to do the right thing, trying to feed their children and keep them healthy. These are the ones who usually fall between the cracks and don’t get all the help tbey need. The system is definitely broken😢

Unfortunately many people suffer from brain damage or mental illness. This goes for women and men. Many women who have lots of children aren't doing it to get more foodsramps. They think they've finally found someone to love them. But, sadly the men leave when the women need them the most. Living on foodstamps is not easy. When my husband left me with four kids we had to get foodstamps. There was not enough for proper nutrition. Much less cake and cookies

As a retired Registered Nurse, I agree wholeheartedly with you…..children need more nutrients to grow and develop properly…..in my state, Pennsylvania, besides EBT cards for food, children are also provided breakfast in school, if parents never pay the required school lunch dues, children will continue to receive free lunches and some areas also provide an after school meal, too….thanks for bravely talking about this important topic……

I agree about eating properly. We should be eating like they did in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s before all the junk food was on grocery store shelves. And some elderly people don't get enough food stamps. Should be regulations on junk foods that can be bought by food stamps. Those who should be paying child support sometimes don't pay because of being unemployeed, drugs, or just plain unwilling. We as a society have really become lazy , gluttonous, drug dependant, and low morals.

I think food stamps should be used for fruits, vegetables, breads, cereals, dairy products and meats. Food stamps should exclude soft drinks, candy, icecream, and prepared desserts. If someone wants to buy junk food on their own dime, that is up to them. Don't expect the taxpayers to pay for it and then also expect the taxpayers to pick up the tab for the resulting unhealthy consquences. For example: diabetes, high blood pressure, dental cavities, obesity,etc. I think that it is a great that there are going to be restrictions and I also think that it is long over due.

I agree with you 100%, Gina. I'm in GenX and not a Boomer, but am married to a Boomer and I think that our values are not the values of the generations after us. I don't think the government really has any place frankly to put anything in place to help irresponsible people. I think the Church is the place people can go to get help. I think that's how God intended it to be. But when you kick God out of your morals, this is what you get. Some people today, mostly Democrats, want to perpetuate victimhood and entitlement to folks who do it wrong and then demand help from the government. I had the blessing of interviewing Starr Parker many years ago, who was on welfare for years until she got saved and then she was convicted of how she used other people's money. She started a nonprofit and started to help others get out of the government system and take personal responsibility. It angers me to know that my tax money goes to folks who make more than I do on welfare. It's sickening. I do understand that there are circumstances that warrant help and that's fine, but there also needs to be guidelines that are enforced. My mother received food stamps when I was a child because my father refused to pay child support. This was in the mid 70's and 80's and I can't ever remember having any type of junk food. We barely had enough to eat. I remember things being so slim that we had the same blah food for a month. I got fed the best at school because of the meals they offered us. And none of that was my fault as the kid, but my mother made VERY poor choices. But I will also say that she taught me how to bleed a penny because she cut coupons, hit all the sales every week and taught me how to save.

This is how it's managed in my country. I think America really needs to catch up on the detrimental health outcomes of high sugar and processed foods. I think you need to focus on the health needs of the children as they didn't ask to be born into an unfortunate situation. Don't baby Daddy's pay child support in your country? Its illegal to dodge child support payments in New Zealand. If you do IRD will hunt them down and garner their wages.

Back in the day I don’t believe junk food was allowed if you were on food stamps. As far as child support, most men, and or women, are supposed to pay child support. Collecting it is part of the problem if neither spouse is working. I don’t think you were being political at all! It is common sense. If you want the extras in life, and you are able bodied, get a job!
