The "no self-promo" rule is a fairly standard, sensible rule, the mods are just being exceptionally overzealous with it. Best example would be any discord server that has a dedicated self promo channel and doesn't allow it anywhere else. Having an achievement to share is one thing, but making a post along the lines of "hey, come to my channel on [insert content creation platform here], I do x and y" can pretty easily lead to a significant portion of the feed being taken up by what are effectively just topic relevant ads, especially with larger communities. This isn't necessarily bad, it's not a universal rule for a reason after all, but if the goal is to have a place where people can share their experiences, accomplishments and opinions like r/Minecraft seems to be, I can see self promo impeding on that goal.

considering the original purpose of reddit was to be a digg-like site, which was long ago at the time already a replacement for the REALLY old stuff like web directories, it's a bunch of bullshit. Self promotion used to be an allowable thing as long as you weren't using a community solely for self promotion, or in obvious cases like this where you just made a project in a game and wanted to show people.

Now it's "self-promotion". Years ago I built my Survival mage-base as concentric walls containing different districts for the villagers, farms, animal pens, a huge forest in the outer ring with every tree and the mine entrance. That was two weeks of gameplay. I posted a screenshot on r/Minecraft and it got taken down because it it was "low-effort", while in the top there were posts like "I beat the Ender Dragon for the first time", or a screenshot of the most basic dirt house. That's when I left that sub. I deleted my Reddit account since because other subs started to have the same level of moderation as r/Minecraft plus the fact some subs were getting new waves of users that were utterly annoying.

r/Minecraft has some of the worst reddit mods ever, in all of reddit, period. The other thing they constantly remove for is "please post in the appropriate subreddit." So like you may post a pixel art in r/Minecraft. They'll take it down, and say "You should've posted it in r/PixelArtMinecraft !" But to me this is TERRIBLE logic. r/Minecraft SHOULD be a vague, catch-all place to post anything Minecraft-related, but in their minds they've decided you can't post anything Minecraft related if there's another subreddit where it could fall under, which TECHNICALLY could account for 99-100% of the posts on that subreddit, effectively meaning they can pick and choose any posts to take down using that reason. It's absolutely ridiculous, and I can't tell you the number of times this has happened to me personally.

The ban or removal without explanation thing is a consistant problem with r/minecraft until lately. I got permanently banned with zero prior infractions and had to fight to get a reason why about a year ago, the reason I finally got after a week wasn't on the rules. After this new management post, replied nearly a year later asking for an appeal pointing out the circumstances of the ban. The mod who looked over it (Thanks Lexi), literally said the reason wasn't even listed in the rules. and just unbanned me like that, not sure why I got banned. Im gonna wait to see how this new management will go, but their old management had a habit of failing to provide reasons, giving reasons that weren't rules listed, or just being so out of touch that they would say stuff like the incident with the dude mourning his GF. Just off the fact that they unbanned me like that, im gonna give them benefit of the doubt here, but thats as far as ill go.

some years ago I made a post of a good clip of mine on skywars and it got ~10k upvotes, the mods removed it because hypixel has a link to their site on the scoreboard. I don't think anyone noticed or cared about that. There was no indication on the post for why it was removed, or dm, so I contacted mod mail and had one of the worst discussions I've ever had in my life. They clearly didn't understand that there's a line between self promotion and content that happens to include credit or a link somewhere, it's impossible to draw a hard, objective limit on it that isn't ridiculous. This is the result of them trying to do that.

Vague rules have always been more of a "Up to moderator interpretation" situation, at least that'd be the ideal scenario. Instead what happens is they either don't get enforced, they confuse users or, as seen here, let stickler moderators pretend they're a D&D rules lawyer and proceed to put down something objectively good because "actually technically" it's against the rules. Don't be a buzzkill. Use your head instead of seeing moderation as nothing but janitorial work. Gray area rules are the place where you get to make a decision in favor of the community you've supposedly pledged to uplift.

Hey Steveonix, I just want to say thank you for keeping me and so many others up to date on Minecraft and the community. I love the game, but I'm not really that active with it. For a couple years already the most I really engage with the game and community is by watching Hermitcraft and your videos. I don't even use reddit or twitter, so I don't really know where otherwise even to look for Minecraft stuff. So without your videos I would be totally in the dark about the game I love, grew up with and allowed me to claim the title of Gamer. It's really nice to just watch a little video once in a while and to just experience just a smidge more Minecraft then I otherwise would. So thank you. I remember coming across a largeish subreddit years ago ( I don't remember which one) that had a rule that any post that gets 1k upvotes will be removed. The listed reason was an entire paragraph long angry rant that went something like: "you got a popular post, whoopty doo. how to do word search exercises easily: step 0. memorise the words you must find, especially the letters they start with step 1. only look for one word at once step 2. look through the word search starting top left, going through the row to the right, then going down one and going to the left then going one down and repeat step 3. once you find a starting letter check around it step 4. either find a word (in this case repeat from step 2) or not find a word (repeat step 2 from where you left off) Phoenix, if you've done word searches before you'll know that random, unrelated words are in them all the time. its not like you can't find the words gay, fap etc. in this one. or daft
